I was sent some Carol’s Daughter products by a very nice PR lady about a month ago, and I have taken my sweet time trying them and reviewing them. Finally, I’m ready to come clean with my true feelings about the products I tried.
Bellas, I love what Lisa Price has created. More power to her, for creating a quality line of products for natural beauties. I adore the Hair Milk – Lisa was right when she advised me to spring for the $16 bottle as versus the $10 bottle. I use Hair Milk almost daily, and if I’m not using that, I’m using Lisa’s Hair Elixir which I also love.
I’m alllll about the Almond Cookie, and now, finally I understand why Lisa urged me to get the Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner; the smell of that product is heavenly. Especially when I compare it to the Khoret Amen. Let me backtrack a bit.
At the Mary J. Blige event I spent a great deal of time in the Carol’s Daughter aisle, smelling stuff and rubbing lotions on my hands. Jamaican Punch was too sweet and Kool-Aidy, I wasn’t feeling the Ocean. But the Khoret Amen appealed to me. I believe I said it smelled “like I died and went to ylang-ylang heaven” at the time.
Initially it smelled strong and unique, “sensual and woodsy” like the container said. I thought I could get down with Khoret Amen. I was wrong.
Sense of smell is such a subjective thing. What one person thinks is delicious-smelling, another person might find stank. Body chemistry definitely plays a role in our olfactory interpretations. For example, mi amiga Motown Girl describes the Hair Milk as “very stinky,” but I love it because it reminds me of Indian delicacies. Another case in point, the review at the bottom of this Amazon listing for the Khoret Amen Hair Oil. That lady loves the scent. For me, Khoret Amen had an attractive scent in the bottle. Then I put it on my hair and that was an entirely different story.
Sephora lists the ingredients for Khoret Amen as including lavender flowers, sage, ylang-ylang, clary sage, and bay leaf. The Carol’s Daughter site adds blue malva, cedarwood, and patchouli. On me, it smelled a lot like Vetiver, the grass root that my mother keeps little ribbon-tied bundles of in her closet instead of moth balls.
Vetiver is used as a base note in many popular scents, so some of you are probably familiar with it and enjoy the smell. (Also, vetiver is often used in witchcraft. Which reminds me, happy halloween, everyone!) To me, it takes me back to being six and playing with my dolls in my mother’s closet. I’ve never cared for the scent.
On my hair, woodsy = funky = bad. And it failed the husband smell test; he was like “Ick! What did you wash your hair with?” Not a good sign. So I have to say the nay-no to Khoret Amen not for the quality of the product – the Hair Smoothie isn’t for traditional in-the-shower conditioner use. It worked great when used with my steam cap, and made my curls coily and happy. The leave-in worked well enough. But I won’t be buying Khoret Amen again. It doesn’t mesh well with my chemistry.
Hey Carol’s Daughter, why not make an Almond Cookie hair smoothie, oil, and leave-in? That would be delicious!

I, too, tried Khoret Amen Hair oil. . .the smell was horrid. It gave me a headache . . . I had to re-wash my hair to rid myself of the odor.

Honest Opinions-keep em coming……….
I have always hated the smell of vanilla until recently. The way people rave about it I might have to give the Black vanilla leave in a try.
You threw me off for a minute w/that pic. I thought you were saying this is how Khoret Amen made your hair feel/look. I’m caught up now, Vetiver is used instead of moth balls. Good to know, I hate moth balls – my mother loves them, she throws them everywhere. I feel like one big moth ball when i leave her home.

I am very new to Carol’s Daughter products. On a recent trip to NYC for my birthday, Nichelle [55 Secret Street] directed me to the Carol’s Daughter store in Harlem. The store was beautifully appointed and smelled heavenly. I purchased a jar of the Healthy Hair Butter (my hair crave, crave, craves oils & creams) and I LOVE it! It has shea butter, sweet almond oil, sandalwood, sweet orange, lavender, rosemary, lemongrass, patchouli, cedarwood and ylang ylang and it smells heavenly! My hair loves it. But this is the one and only thing I’ve tried from the line, and I’d definitely continue to buy it; the Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner sounds intriguing, however hearing the reviews about the Khoret Amen Hair Oil, I think I’ll leave that one be.

Chanel,
my advice is to go to Sephora and ask for product samples. Khoret Amen smelled like the funk of 40,000 years on me, but who knows? It might be wonderful on you. I think it’s a really subjective thing. Give it a try, and I’d definitely recommend the black vanilla and hair milk!
Jerseybred, hey! How are you? The Carol’s Daughter products made my curls look pretty, they just didn’t smell good on my hair. Like Shana said, I rewashed my hair right after using them to get the smell out. But they definitely worked well for me. No vetiver hair here!

I have been a Carol’s Daughter junkie for a long time. When she came out with Khoret Amen, I thought it more a masculine smell. Have you tried the Tui Hair Oil? It’s sweet / tropical smelling that makes you think of an island breeze.

I too tried the Khoret Amen hair smoothie and it was not for me. The consistancy was very thick and hard to comb through my hair. And the smell was very unpleasant to me. I agree with Sherri it is very masculine. I have tried the Rosemary mint shampoo with sea moss and I really enjoyed it. Keep the reviews coming!

Koret Amen Hair Oil was the first product I ever bought from CD, and I still regret that choice ever since. My family and I HATED the smell. The smell lingered in my house for a while. I didn’t go outside when I put it in my hair because I KNEW folk would look at me crazy.

I purchased the Hair Balm(odd smell to me) and Hair Milk(smells like an old house once again to me) but I am going to use them since I paid for them. I have come to realize my hair does not like cream based products, they do nothing for my hair as a matter of fact they seem to make them dry and crunchy. I am still looking for the right products for my lil fro.
PS. I love your blog. Your suggestions are very afordable.

My favorite of the CD products is the Healthy Hair butter. I did not care for the Hair Milk though-did not like the consistency of the product. I do like the Amen Khoret Oil, but it does have a strong scent that got a lot of questions (Mainly white folk) when I wore it to work. I also had a episode when I was exercising and sweat combined with the oil got in my eyes. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. But I still wear it, just mainly in the winter now.

I got a small bottle of Khoret Amen recently & the smell I like but it makes me itch. I have not used it & not sure if I want it to contact my skin if it makes me itch from just smelling it.

CD’s products are hit and miss. It can be an expensive waste of money. Sometimes the hair likes it, most of the time it doesn’t. And some of the fragrances are funky.

My husband felt the same way about the smell of the Khoret Amen Hair Oil. He hated it. I was trying to convince him that it smelled nice and woodsy because I had spent so much money for the bottle but after a while I got sick of the smell myself. I do however like the smell of the Tui Hair Oil.

I applaud Lisa Price for her business initiative. She clearly has tapped into an under served market. However, I’ve yet to really find a CD product that worked for my hair.
Maybe the Tui Hair Smoothie — but I wasn’t impressed enough to pay that much money for it.
To each his own though.

I would be diggin’ these products, especially the boddy butters, if they didn’t have patchouli in it… ugh. I hesitate to drop $15 on a jar that I may have to return. Why do a lot of manufacturers equate natural with patchouli?? Has anyove ever thought that perhaps I’d like to smell like watermelon bubblegum???

I am a young Filipino woman with very straight, fine, long hair. Although my hair strands are fine, I have a lot of hair, which makes it feel a lot thicker than most girls with thin hair strands… Would the Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner work on my hair type or will it make it appear and feel more oily? If I don’t wash my hair at least once every day and a half or so my hair gets oily on top. What do you think? Should I purchase it?

People complain about everything…I personally thank God for the products. We are fed chemicals from everything from arm deodorant to water. We wonder why everyone has cancer. No duh! Thanks to Carol’s Daughter we don’t have to worry about what is absorbed in our skin the biggest organ of the body. I love the fact that the Rosemary Shampoo, Hair milk and black vanilla conditioner has saved me time doing my 8 year old’s hair. She has long natural hair, chemical free, and curly. It usually takes two and a half hours to wash and comb it out (that was with Pantene or Creme of Nature Shampoo and conditioner). NOW it takes one hour and I’m done. I personally love it. Now my whole family uses the products. My advice is to start your children young using products on the inside and outside of their bodies that are chemical free and natural. Kudos, to Carol’s Daughter as a company and the founder. God bless ya’ll.

I was just in Sephora and nearly puked smelling the Khoret Amen products. The Tui products, on the other hand, smell DIVINE. As does the Rosemary Mint Shampoo and the Black Vanilla leave in conditioner….but what all should know is that most of the products are easy to make at home. The main ingredient appears to be corn oil….add your own lavendar and yummies and VOILA!!!! natural homemade beauty.

Hello, I’ve tried Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie and loved it!!! The one thing that I noticed was that it did not irritate my skin at all considering the fact that I have a small case of eczema. If I could afford to buy her products I will but as of now I cannot. I would like some advice on my girls hair. My daughters have natural hair and the status of their hair is dry, kinky, and short. I am not going for the chemicals!! If I wash their hair I have to style it wet because if I let it dry I would have to rewet it for the fact that it could not at all put a comb through it, thats how tough it is. What products will make it more manageable, grow longer, and styles that are acceptable for their ages (7 and 11) and also by their peers (self esteem issue) of course.

Was thinking of trying Carol’s daughter for my natural hair but wanted to do some research first. For years I have been using my mom’s old recipes: coconut oil, jojoba, rosemary and sage. I mixed it myself and each time it comes out a little different. To save time I decided to just spring for one of Carol’s daughter product.
Then I came across the above website. Are you familiar with their hare care line?
Ami
Oops I meant “hair care” line. My co-workers often comment on Hair products that small awful. I will probably continue to mix up my own and add essential oils for fragrance.
Mrs. m
For the mom with natural girls – Yay! I would suggest a leave-in conditioner, wide tooth comb and a great moisturizer. I love the baby butter creme applied on damp hair.
You could do some nice twist styles and accent with hair accessories of your choice. The little one can wear twists with hair bow or clips and your other daughter could wear a nice puff with braid accents in the front to keep age appropriate.
Mrs. m
You could try the healthy hair butter which is very affordable and good from the reviews I read. Miss Jessies has a buy one get one free in December so make sure you get the baby buttercreme – try a sample to make sure it is for you.
