We tend to get somewhat “silly” art. One of our favorites, currently in the basement den is a cartoon like monster eating a Philadelphia newspaper holder. But it’s original! and painted on canvas! and bought for all of $40. My husband paid to get it framed, but I don’t think it was too bad. The secret? we bought street art from an unknown artist during one of Philly’s First Fridays (basically the first Friday of every month the galleries along a few street blocks open up, musicians, street performers and individual artists set up shop to sell along the side walk).

You should see if Chicago has something similar. You’re bound to get something you’ll love. Also check out the galleries around you for relatively unknown artists. You can find a lot of great pieces out there that are quality made, original and won’t break the bank.
