Interesting, I was there last weekend and saw a pink towel with a picture of a naked man on it. Classy!

I am not all that offended by the owner’s comments. I am sure they have a preferred look for their white employees as well. I don’t think straight hair is trashy, maybe bad weaves or wigs…which is trashy looking.

I used to work there and they want people to look like the brand. What that means is that they want women that are working in his stores to be white. They do not promote any type of diversity. As far as the hair situation they want black women with “good hair” (i.e soft and springy). He did not mind the women wearing their hair straight. His main gripe was with the women who wore weaves. They do not hire that many blacks unless u work in NYC. The other stores have maybe a token black person.

lol @ hipster code. I was looking into using AA products for a shirt line I am doing. Glad they like natural hair but I am super sick of white people tellng us how to express ourselves. You don’t see black managers telling their white employess ” if you going to wear those hair extentions at least make sure they are belivable. Wow, just because a black woman has relaxed hair makes them trashy?! Hello, Michelle Obama has relaxed hair and she’s more classier than the natural sistas. Looks don’t mean anything. There are some black women who have bad attitudes and dress like a hot ghetto mess, but that don’t mean that’s just the straight haired sistas, the ones with afros and dreads do it too! I never shopped at American Apparel and never will, not because of this crap, their clothes are crappy too.

1. they clearly mean trashy as in, hood, ghetto, fake nails, nikki minaj wanna be which is frowned upon in our shop.

2. I have a tight curl afro but i usually plait it in big plaits then undo it before i go to work so it’s this frizzy wavy thing.. i work there, have been 6months.. never had an issue with my hair.. i even have it twisted up sometimes.. so this is bullshit.

3. theres always been this trendyness about having afro hair..well in london anyway regardless of whether its tight curled or not, i guess it fits their niche of worker the fashionista that lives or studies fashion, art media most people that work in the london stores generally fit this criteria or appear to..

THis is very interesting. I never shop there simply because I think there adds are too revealing and I dont think think the price represents the quality…looks like i will continue to not shop there. Even though I have natural hair and they “may” consider it “good Hair” whatever that means! One of my friends who has been natural for all of her life said “all natural hair is good hair!” I like that comment and i’ll stick to that. Nappy, curly, locks …all are beautiful and good hair
