I had medium/bad acne as a teen and as 30+ have oily/combination skin with occasional breakouts and scaring. Have used excessive amts of brands with varying amounts of success. What I know for certain: what goes in must come out, so eating healthier less greasy/less hormone filled food and drinking more water have had its effects. I go on and off pro-active, which my darker skinned sister swears by and has gorgeous chocolate skin. As for me it can occasionally be too harsh for my sensitive facial skin that breaks out with any brand of spf (including la mer). If you have the cash: vivite is an excellent program but only purchased through a derm. ($150-200 for 3-6 mo supply)/ My less expensive routine: mornings:
wash w/ revlon sensitive skin 360 cleanser $4(with scrubber)/ moisturize/treat w/clean and clear moisturizing salicylic acid lotion $4
evenings same.
every other night: douse face with warm water, use avon anew clinical glycolic acid peel wipes ($30/mo supply)/ moisturize with avon anew night cream blue jar ($12 sample size 1 mo/25 for large)
the key is letting cleanser sit onyour face during your shower or while you brush your teeth (about 3-5 min before rinsing). My derms sec. told me that and any product works ever since. best advice.

I'm 25 and didn't really develop a skincare regimen til I turned 21 since I never had any skin problems{ well if having eczema doesn't count}. When I hit 21 , my sensitive combination skin developed acne, not fun.As a cleanser I use African black soap, my toner is plain witch hazel and moisturizer from Lush called vanishing cream. In the morning Ill I do is layer over a sunscreen at least 30 SPF.This regimen cleared my skin and even my complexion. My skin hates mechanical exfoliators so I use OLay's night peel twice a week

This is a great article, Afrobella! I think you could really change the name of it to Grown Woman OR Man's skin regimen. lol.. Lord knows the fellas like myself need it too. I need to try the grapefruit, etc. toner that you mentioned and maybe a moisturizer. I don't have a set regimen. :-(
