After reading Rita's memoir with my book club last year, I'd been waiting for the chance to see a documentary on Bob's life that focused more on his life and music, so when this finally hit Netflix, I jumped at the chance to see it. I loved every part of it.

The most inspiring part was seeing how he was rejected by the "white" Marley's which (some say) inspired him to write "Cornerstone." It was amazing to see his half-sister's reaction to the lyrics.
I also had no idea he was considered such an outcast because he was half-white. Though it brought him a lot of pain as a "youth" (i loved how all of the Jamaicans called young people "a youth"), I believe that is was made him who he was: a man of peace, happiness, unity, and justice.

The alarms in my head also went off something crazy when Rita said he got melanoma from the "white part" of him. I was really shocked that they didn't edit that out.

I never understood why Marley wasn't as popular in the African-American community as he was with the majority population. Blows my mind.

My parents are from St. Martin and while they were more calypso folks (they're from an older generation) I heard Marley's music from my cousins and everywhere on the island when we would visit my grandparents.

I agree with you and Luvvie about what is going on, or not going on in music today. Stevie Wonder's hit "You Haven't Done Nothing" was scathing commentary about Nixon and he wrote that song when he was in his early 20's.

I saw this documentary today and was B L O W N away. Everyone needs to see this film. Bob Marley was/is a force unparalleled. This film shows his vulnerability and how he harnessed it to live up to his maximal potential. I loved the film and have always loved Bob Marley's talent and fearlessness.

Nice post, as per usual. Reggae music is truly the music of the people. I found Rita's book No Woman No Cry very interesting so I'm looking forward to seeing this documentary. I'm just a little salty that according to your list, my small island is showing it, but I can't find a theatre that's showing it here in my neck of the woods in the good old USA. Off to download it on i-tunes.

Bob Marley in particular and Reggae in general have been an integral part of growing up in our home in Trinidad which is an island in the Caribbean.

I agree with Afrobella and Luvvie that today's music is banal.

I have not yet seen this movie but intend to.

Please continue to do these informative and excellent posts.

I read this like my favorite book. Thank you so much for sharing & making this personal. What you said about the accents, hit home. Although I'm not Caribbean I listen to people speak, no matter where they are from. People don't want to listen, they like boring & want everyone to talk like them & that drives me nuts. I look forward to checking out all you will share about cancers & its lack of respect; it shows up whenever & where ever & everyone must know that.

I'm so excited to see this...Bob Marley was an integral part of my childhood, as important as diapers and breastmilk. Lol. I'm looking forward to learning things about him that I possibly didn't know before.

Awesome review though! Thanks for your take on it :)
