I meant to post this diary all in one go, but in all honesty? I got NYFW’d OUT. The coverage on my blog and every other blog felt overwhelming and life came calling…so I took a break. But now I’m back to recap those last two whirlwind days of my first Fashion Week. Y’all ready? Let’s do this!

CVS Lounge

I knew my last two days of NYFW would wrap up fast, so I didn’t want to push myself. Already in my head, I was making plans for next Fashion Week. I don’t want to be caught not RSVP’d for such chic events ever again! Better to be safe than sorry I missed something amazing.

Sunday began with a fabulicious brunch with my friend Jenny and her boyfriend Shawn at Cowgirl — a Western themed brunch spot that is just BEYOND delicious. I am SO going there every time I’m in NYC! The cheese grits and poached eggs were so delicious I’m salivating even now, weeks after my meal there. If you live in NYC, make a trek to Cowgirl. Trust me!

After that, it was off to experience the CVS Reinventing Beauty Lounge. What’s that? Basically CVS hosted a gorgeous experience for writers, beauty bloggers, and other Fashion Week attendees at Robert Verdi’s amazing LuxeLaboratory. (photo courtesy of the fab Mischo Beauty).

OMG, you guys.
This place is gorge-ous. Lushly decorated, welcoming staff, delicious food (quinoa salad to die for! And let’s not even talk about the tower of cupcakes and other desserts), and delicious beverages courtesy of Blueprint Cleanse. Their juices are incredibly delicious. I could seriously go for one of their pineapple apple mint juices right now! AND I met Robert Verdi, and he was sweet as pie!

In the CVS Lounge, it was all about beauty. A manicurist was on hand, so you know I had to get my nails done. And I can tell you this — you’re going to hear a whole lot about Opulent Cloud, Tracy Reese’s exclusive shade for Sally Hansen HD. All Lacquered Up reviewed it earlier this year, but it’s about to make a big splash. Literally every blogger I met there was getting this gunmetal-grey-but-gold-in-the-light shade painted on their nails.

Sally Hansen HD Opulent Cloud by Tracy Reese

Hairdresser extraordinare Christoph was giving blowouts, but I was quickly ushered over to the makeup chair, where makeup artist to the stars, Jake Bailey, was offering Cover Girl makeovers. I came with makeup on and thought I looked cute. But Jake took me to a whole nother level! I was astounded at what he did, using products that cost less than $10 a pop at the drugstore. More to come on this ASAP, and can you say giveaway?

Other bloggers at the LuxeLab included Erika of Makeup Bag, Eileen of Ms Whoever You Are, Andrea of Essence Magazine and The Glamazons, and Julia of All About The Pretty. I had a blast hanging out with my beauty blogging homegirls, and when some of us headed out to cover the Rachel Roy show in a chauffered Benz, blasting Lil Wayne all the way – it felt like a dream.

Erika of Makeup Bag, Andrea of The Glamazons, Julia of All About The Pretty

To be really real with you all (this is a Fashion Week diary after all), looking back on this experience, it feels tremendous. It IS tremendous. To go from watching something on television and fantasizing about what it must be like, to being there and experiencing it… it’s crazy. And beautiful. I never could have dreamed that writing my thoughts and opinions about hair, beauty, and whatever else I feel like could have brought me to this point, to a place and a moment I never even would have dreamed about. The internet, it is amazing. And I am so grateful for it all. And you all for reading and commenting and helping me make these dreams come to life.

I’m verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves!

Backstage at Rachel Roy, I had one of those OMG I can’t believe I’m here experiencing this moments. It happened in the off stage area where Bobbi Brown was working her magic. It was amazing to watch an icon of the beauty industry work her magic, transforming a model into a semi-regular looking, slightly gawky teenager into a veritable goddess. Twas incredible. Then I was ushered backstage — no wait, not that way! Rachel Roy herself was backstage, looking every inch the stunner that she is, surrounded by a battalion of cameras and being interviewed. The other way! Models, models, models and fabulous racks of clothes, shoes, and accessories laid out for the admiring. It’s quite daunting coming into these slender spaces where everyone’s so busy and frantic, making a fashion experience come together. It’s funny to look around and see the bloggers and reporters who are jaded by the experience, having gone through so many. I felt so young, fresh and green. And happy to be there!

I didn’t stay for the Rachel Roy presentation, instead I met up for Malaysian food with some long lost friends and former co-workers. From left to right — Calvin Godfrey – amazing writer who is now a park ranger. Ivylise Simones – the best art director I’ve ever had the privelige to work with, do yourself a favor and check out her website at Ivylise.com — she’s the best! And right next to me is Journalist of the Year Francisco Alvarado, AKA The Frankness. It was so wonderful and unexpected to meet up with my former coworkers, and it was amazing to discuss how much our lives have changed. How much we’ve changed, since we all worked together in Miami. What our dreams and goals are for the future.

After dinner, we walked out into the streets, which were draped with lights and filled with people because of the Feast of San Gerraro. An amazing end to an amazing day. And I had another half-day to go!

After my exciting evening at the tents and tour of the city via pedicab, I was exhausted. But I had to get my butt in gear for the next day. I had a trek out to Brooklyn in store!

I ended Day 2 with a delicious Indian dinner in the Village with my best friend Jenny. Day 3, we got out early and had breakfast at the Waverly Restaurant, as classic a New York diner as you could want. Bagel all the way? Yes please.

After that I strolled along Sixth Avenue and stumbled across a sneaker store on 6th and Washington — the sign looks like this and I got a sick pair of silver high top Adidas for $35! And I NEEDED them because my feet were absolutely killing me pounding the pavement all over NYC. And I was in flats! Even flats can hurt, especially if they’re trying to be cute flats. Those sneaks were just what the podiatrist would have ordered.

After that I took the subway to Brooklyn — for the first time, by myself. Dun dun dunnnn! But it was generally an uneventful journey, and a friendly Brooklyn native set me straight on my path once I got off the train. On my way to Redress NYC!

I think every full figured fashionista owes herself at least one visit out to this crazy, wonderful, only in NYC boutique. Redress makes for a welcoming, kitschy, edgy, unconventional, great shopping experience. Customers are encouraged to share dressing rooms (which are named after full figured celebs like Mama Cass and Nell Carter). Clothes are arranged by type and size, and I found some excellent items on the dress rack in my size, and much, much larger. There are pants and jackets and shoes and skirts and on this special trunk show day, original garments and inspired remixes by designers from around the country. The crowd was extremely diverse in terms of sizes, ethnicity, sexual orientation, hair color… it was funky and fun and I was loving it! I must’ve tried on twelve dresses and four jackets before I settled on three must-have items — a chic long sleeved black minidress from Silhouettes that will last and look cute into the winter months, a cute peasant style embroidered blouse by Abby Z that is SO up my bohemian alley and I know I’ll wear season after season, and this adorable hooded pinstriped denim dress by Size Queen Clothing. So funky, so cute, so comfortable! LOVE it!

Then there was a fashion show by the designers, which can only be described as very bold.

WPvideo 1.10

Yes, those are my oohs and aahs you hear. I loved the first dress and would totally wear it, but some of the more sheer and scandalous outfits made me cheer because of the models. It’s not every day you see a big girl strutting herself in lingerie, in public, to riotous applause. There was so much love in the room!

I loved all the designers — Diesel Femmewear, Cupcakes & Cuddlebunny, and Size Queen. But I was most attracted to Size Queen, and I am mad that leopard hoodie on their site wasn’t among the offerings for sale! Mad, I tell you!

The vibe at Redress was infectously fun, but having spent more than I intended to and stayed longer than I’d planned, it was time to head back to the Village. I felt a wave of tiredness crashing over me and I had THREE parties to attend that night!

There wasn’t even time for a disco nap – I went home, changed into a beautiful concord grape purple with moss green accented dress from Igigi that I’d bought at Chicago’s very own Vive La Femme — MUCH more to come on this fabulous Windy City plus size boutique soon, bellas! Slipped on my matching moss green kitten heels and it was off to the Glam Network party.

Making the decision to sign up with an advertising firm was one of the biggest decisions I made with Afrobella, and I am so glad I made the choice to be with Glam. The people there are truly warm, friendly, good, and I know they’re looking out for me and my site’s best interest — I can say this from years of working with them. So it was wonderful to see old friends and meet new ones, to hang out with the many myriad ad reps, execs, beauty and fashion bloggers who make up the Glam fam. I saw my friends Julieta and Miss Tia Williams (who is always so sweet and SO inspiring to be around), and made some new friends too! If you ever ever get a chance to go to Butter in NYC, GO!!! The risotto balls were little bites of heaven.

After the Glam Party, I went to a truly fabulous dinner, hosted by my friends at Weber Shandwick — some of your favorite beauty bloggers were there too! I got to hang with Julia from All About the Pretty, Daneen from Spoiled Pretty, Nadine Jolie, Erika from Makeup Bag, Paula of Older Girl Beauty, and Jeannine of Beauty Sweet Spot, and I know I’m forgetting a few gorgeous faces from around the table!

After dinner we had to go go go, because we were late late late for the very first beauty blogger bash hosted by the one and only Lianne Farbes, the Makeup Girl and Paul Baranda of Beyond Beauty Basics!

This party was OFF THE CHAIN! Even though I got there too late to meet Ted Gibson (sadness!) SO many beauty bloggers were there — I hung out with my twamigas Heather Park of Seouldiva and Andrea Arterbery of Essence Magazine and her own blog The Glamazons. It was a total blast. The drinks were flowing, the gift bags were heavy, and the party went late — especially for those of us who had early morning obligations to be at the tent. But who cares when you’re having that much fun!

Much thanks and big respect to Lianne and Paul for kicking off what I hope becomes an annual Fashion Week tradition. You better believe I’m gonna be there every year!

On to days 4 and 5, which I’ll combine into one big fab post for you next. What will the end of my Fashion Week adventure bring? A giveaway for you, that’s for starters!

Happy weekend, bellas!!

Hey bellas!
Computer issues and being on the go kept me away from blogging this weekend. But now I’m back (and still in NYC for the moment) to recap my last few days of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. On to day 2!

I had heard horror stories about picking up credentials at the Bryant Park tents, legends of hour long lines of annoyed fashionistas standing in the rain in their Louboutins. I didn’t encounter anything like that on Friday. I was in and out within 30 seconds, shiny Fashion Week credentials lanyard in hand. Maybe it was because the gift bags were gone? or because it was such a bleak, cold, rainy day? Either way, yay!

After picking up my credentials I decided to check out the lush lounge at the Bryant Park Hotel, sponsored by the wonderful people at Hautelook. An entire floor was transformed into a respite for bloggers and writers, stocked with brand new Sony Vaio computers, makeup and beauty brands, and all afternoon long bloggers I’d been dying to meet trickled in and out of the luxe space. I was psyched to meet many of my online friends, including the beauties behind Palacinka, Luxetips, Glambr of Beauty Blogging Junkie, and my sista over at Black Voices, Zandile Blay! That’s us, soaking up the Hautelook luxury. Loved it!

The lounge was such a great respite from the rain, I didn’t want to leave! But I had to — I was expected backstage at Jason Wu, to cover manicure trends for CND. I managed to finally flag down a cab after 20 minutes in the ceaseless rain, and made it over to the uber luxe St. Regis Hotel in time for 1 p.m. (the time I thought I was scheduled to arrive). No dice! This was the Devil Wears Prada moment that I feared.

I was denied entry by an extremely unfriendly…lady in a floral dress, but managed to find a secluded spot near a piano where I was able to observe the flow of undoubtedly wealthy patrons eager to witness the fashions of Michelle Obama’s inaugural dress designer. Lynn Yeager, Anna Wintour and an endless parade of blonde, fancy coated, spike heel booted socialites were whisked to their seats while self important guards and stylists barked orders at anyone not deemed worthy of entry. I was in good company, though — several members of Japanese media and the folks from Extra were booted out as well!

After that indignity, I hightailed it back to the Hautelook lounge where I enjoyed delicious cocktails and the company of Luxetips. After a luscious dinner at Koi, we headed over to the tents in time for the Arise African Promise Collective show. I had standing room only admission, and it was my first time IN the tents. It was an amazing experience. Here’s what I learned by just waiting.

1 — you might have credentials to get in, honey… but gaining access to the show is a different animal. People were shoving, cutting in line, and name dropping for all they were worth to get a precious pass to gain access to the show. You’d imagine there’d be an organized system to make sure everyone gets in. Wrong.

2 — the scene backstage is hilarious! I now totally get where Zoolander came from. It made me want to see the movie again!

3 — for many, fashion is about trying as hard as possible to be cool. I don’t fit into that category. And I pity those deluded souls. I saw women teetering on heels and wincing in pain. And for what? I don’t get it and I doubt I ever will.

The atmosphere in the tent when the show started was electric. Pulsating. Exciting. I was THRILLED to be there, and very enthusiastic about what I saw. The clothes were ornate and yet wearable. Some of the dresses made by Jewel by Lisa and Eric Raisina would make any bella look gorgeous. Tyson Beckford made an appearance, still fine as wine. The music was hot, and the fashion was inspiring. THIS was what I came to see!

WPvideo 1.10

Gorgeous!

After the show, I texted with my homegirl Andrea of one of my favorite blogs, Fly. And she came to meet me with ANOTHER of my favorite bloggers, Jamala of LeCoil! It was GREAT to meet those girls. So sweet and so chic.

My magical evening felt like it just couldn’t get any better…but it did. When I left, I wanted to hail a cab and go home. Then I remembered a friend of mine, who used to have the same job I did, now works in New York as a pedicab driver! His name is JC, and he is CRAZY FUN. If you live in NYC and ever ever ever need a pedicab, e mail him at jayrod23@mac.com and tell him you’re friends with Afrobella!

A ride with JC isn’t a ride in your average pedicab. He’s a licensed tour guide, and a performance artist. Sporting a home made “vest of breasts,” he pedaled me from Bryant Park to the Village.

Then we stopped for a drink at Marie’s Crisis, a bar that is truly unique. Step downstairs and find a space to stand — the place is jam packed with patrons gathered around a piano, belting out showtunes at the top of their lungs. Even if you don’t know the words to anything, it’s FUN as all get out.

Friday in New York for Fashion Week was utterly amazing. But lucky me — there was even more fun in store! Stay tuned tomorrow for days 3 and 4 — and better photos when I can load up all the goodies from my camera!

Wow, bellas! It’s been a long, crazy, wonderful day. I’m writing this from a cushy air mattress at my friend Jenny’s apartment… (you might recall, the one with all the stairs. Whew!)

Today was the official beginning of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York, and the city was absolutely electric. I got here this afternoon, and made myself fabulous for a big evening — tonight was Fashion’s Night Out! I understand this event took place around the world, but I’m willing to bet money that nowhere else was as happenin’ as New York City.

I kicked off the evening at the Bloomingdales in Soho — the Lancome counter was hosting a special event, and every counter was hopping with beauty lovers scooping up freebies and — gasp — shopping! Yup, from what I witnessed, Fashion’s Night Out was a great success. I was excited to be recognized and warmly greeted by fellow bloggers like Erika of the Makeup Bag, Lianne The Makeup Girl, and Nadine Jolie, among several other bloggers and twitter friends I was dying to meet!

The highlight of the evening was meeting stunning Dominican model Arlenis Sosa. She was so sweet and friendly and down to earth, it was a breath of fresh air. I had to ask her beauty secrets, and admittedly it was loud and I couldn’t hear everything she said, but she told me she uses tea tree oil in her hair, and doesn’t like to use much foundation or concealer. Instead she takes really great care of her skin and drinks a lot of water. Good to know!

After Bloomies and cocktails with Lianne, Nadine, The Sassy Peach, and Soul Afrodisiac, we headed to the Meatpacking District which was off. the. CHAIN. Crowded beyond belief. Paparazzi were posted in front of the high end stores — DVF, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney –but we found free drinks and the fabulous Karen Rabinovitz of Purple Lab. Karen is the petite dynamo behind killer lipgloss Huge Lips, Skinny Hips. And she secretly told us about her upcoming mascara which I predict will be a MAJOR hit. Amazing!

I had a blast tonight. NYFW kicked off with a bang. Tomorrow, I go to the tents at Bryant Park for the first time. And of course I’m gonna keep you all in the loop, so expect a post every night while I’m here!

Like spending time with my family, going to visit my friends, eating good food like roti and doubles, shark and bake, pholourie, and pelau. I miss drinking Shandy and having the best rum available at the ready. I miss hearing the lapping waters of the ocean while looking back at verdant mountain ranges.

To my friends, family, and fans at home in Trinidad and Tobago, and my Trinis scattered around the world — Happy Independence Day!

New York, New York!

I have a love/hate relationship with the city, I can’t deny. I love it because there’s so much to see and do and experience! It’s the epicenter of absolutely everything I’m into – writing, blogging, beauty, style, good food, fun…

I hate it because I don’t live there.

Don’t get me wrong, I just moved to the Chi and I’m happy to be here! But I’ll be damned – doesn’t it seem like EVERY hot event is in NYC? What’s with that?

Every time I visit New York, it’s hard for me to leave. I always leave with a feeling of loss, of imcompleteness, of wait – there’s SO much more I wanted to do here! But I reassure myself with the knowledge that I’ll be back. I just visited in March, and I’m already plotting my return. Did someone say Fashion Week? Hell yeah! Next time I visit NYC, I’ve got 5 places I need to spend more time at. Here they are, in no particular order.

1. The East Village. Every time I come visit, I stay with my homegirl Jenny in the West Village. And it’s super fun for sure… but I’m new to the East Village. And it just has a flavor to it that I LOVE. Mohawked punk rockers strolling alongside silver haired abuelitas dragging little suitcases on wheels, hair colors, piercings, and tattoos the likes of which you don’t see regularly anyplace else, and a plethora — PLETHORA of funky restaurants, boutiques, and bars to check out. I darted in and out of Max Brenner, Chocolate By the Bald Man for a fabulicious hot chocolate, and I NEED MORE. This place is a chocolaholic’s mecca, I swear! En route we whizzed through Village Kitchen — I could spend a grip in a store like this! Every kind of kitchen gadget you’ve imagined, and a score more you’ve never seen before. If you imagine yourself an at-home like I do, this could be your little corner of heaven. Another store I have-to-have-to-have-to visit next time I’m in NYC is a teeny jewelry shop that all but yanked me in as I strolled by. When I met the owner, I realized fate had stepped into my life yet again. The store’s called The Shape of Lies and the owner’s name is Peggy. Just like my mom!

The Shape of Lies specializes in historic reproduction jewelry, and some of their pieces are just stunners. I almost don’t want to blog about them too much because there’s a necklace there that is MINE, you read me? MINE! As soon as I can pony up the cash! Their jewelry isn’t cheap, but it certainly will get you noticed and remembered. I have made a promise to gift myself with a little something from The Shape of Lies. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, please stop by and tell Peggy you read about her on Afrobella!

2. Brooklyn in general. Sugarcane restaurant in specific. I’ve been to NYC several times and I’m ashamed to say I haven’t explored or experienced Brooklyn yet. And I know there’s SO much going on there! If you’re of Caribbean descent and you live in NYC, odds are this is where you’re at. So even though my last trip took me in opposite directions, I had to make it out there for just a taste of home. Overwhelmingly, every Trini I asked said one thing — go straight to Sugarcane! And apparently I wasn’t the only one who got the message — when we arrived for our 7 p.m. reservation, this chic Caribbean restaurant was packed to the GILLS. Like call the fire department because this is a hazard packed. Meanwhile the restaurants across the street were so empty it was embarrassing. If you’re planning to head there, take my advice. Make a reservation ahead of time, corrall your party, and if you get there early don’t expect to be treated special. The response to my 15 minute-early arrival was horror. They were NOT ready. So come armed with patience and be prepared for a Trinidadian feast the likes of which you can hardly find off the island. Callaloo. Macaroni pie. Brown stewed chicken. A version of bake and shark that didn’t disappoint. Sugarcane, I’ll be back. And next time I’ll check out the rest of Brooklyn, too. Any specific recommendations, bellas and fellas?

3. Central Park. I’ve wanted to go ever since I saw Miss Ross turn it out in 1983. It was a defining moment in my life. I just didn’t know it at the time because I was four years old!

WPvideo 1.10

As luck would have it, Calvin, a good friend of mine who used to be a reporter at my old job, is now a Central Park ranger. Score! He drew us a map and my husband and I spent a beautiful afternoon wandering through the park. But this was in frigid March, so the flowers were barely just beginning to bloom. I bet the park is verdant and glorious now! I gotta get to NYC in the summer, so I can stroll through the park when it’s full of life.

4. The museums! NYC is a city filled with culture, and just about every time I’ve visited, I seek out anything but. The last time I came, my amiga Nichelle of 55 Secret Street took me to MOMA — the Museum of Modern Art. It was a whirlwind trip that left me hungry for so much more. MOMA’s so huge, so intricate, so chockablock with things to see, I owe myself a visit back to soak it all in. And besides MOMA, there’s the Met, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the American Museum of Natural History… so many more to explore. I’ll be back and someday my trip will be all about museum day.

5. The plus size fashion meccas. Last visit, I made a special visit to Monif C.’s boutique, and got to check out her lovely gowns in person. Regrettably I didn’t get to meet Monif, so I need to stop by when she’s in the house. I want the Marilyn convertible dress breakdown live and in person! If you’re a voluptuous chica like I am, there’s nowhere to get your shop on like NYC. No wonder it’s the home of Full Figured Fashion Week! Next time I’m in town I’m making a pilgrimage to Re/Dress NYC, which is possibly the only buy/sell/trade plus size clothing store in the land. I have only heard raves and I love the concept. Cute, chic, and for curvy chicks? Count me in!

Whew! As you can tell, my next trips to the Big Apple are more-or-less planned out. I can’t wait to get back already, and the next time I do, I’ll have another meet and greet with my bellas in the area. If you’re a NYC bella, talk to me! Have you been to the places I shouted out? Is there anywhere else I need to see? Let me know!

That’s just SOME of the advice I got when I let my friends and family know that the road trip I was taking would bring me through the South. Please understand, this advice was coming from well-meaning, concerned people who love me, who only knew of the reputation of the region. People outside of America, of an age old enough to have witnessed America’s most turbulent change in the Sixties and Seventies, or who have only spent time in big bustling cities have a stereotype of the South firmly fixed in their minds. And it isn’t a pretty one, especially regarding race relations.

Let’s be honest, stories like this one, about the still-segregrated proms in Georgia, don’t help in the PR department. I can’t believe that’s still an accepted, unchallenged way of life in parts of this country. It’s sad to admit, but after all that advice, I felt pinpricks of doubt before embarking on the journey — especially since I’d be riding with my husband. I was concerned about how I as a black woman, us as an interracial couple, would be greeted.

Not all the advice I recieved was alarming. One of the most soothing voices of reassurance came from my friend Forrest, who yup — is from Alabama. “Patrice, it isn’t the Sixties. You’re going to be fine. And you’re gonna have fun, too.”

In March and May, I traveled through upstate Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and we took a wrong turn and briefly wound up in Kentucky. I spent time and explored Mobile, Alabama, and Chapel Hill North Carolina.

I’m so happy to report, Forrest was right. I had a blast!

The only place I got even so much as a strange look was in West Virginia when me and my buddy TheFrankness, better known as Journalist of the Year and my bro fo’ life Francisco Alvarado, got out at a rural gas station for a bathroom break. And that was all it was, strange looks from people who probably weren’t used to seeing the likes of us. We kept it moving, no worries, no drama.

Driving through the South reminded me of just how stunningly beautiful America is. Majestic mountains, lush flowering trees everywhere, hills and valleys and verdant beauty as far as the eye can see. The region is aesthetically stunning. Here’s a little slide show of the things I saw, from a giant peach in Georgia to mammies for sale on Dauphin Street in Mobile, AL. I know, I know. I couldn’t believe it myself. I had to take a picture to remind myself what decade we’re living in.

My visit to Mobile was all about family — my brother in law is a proud graduate of Spring Hill College, and he’s made his home there ever since. Mobile is absolutely beautiful — tree-canopied streets and stunning Southern mansions line the avenues, and I was very pleasantly surprised at the fun to be found on Dauphin Street, the main thoroughfare of downtown. Our afternoon began at Spot of Tea, a quirky, classy brunch spot with a live pianist. The day we were there, Joe Lewis was tickling the ivories as we enjoyed eggs, grits and the establishment’s delicious strawberry iced tea. I loved the vibe and definitely recommend you stop by if you ever are passing through.

After Spot of Tea, we wandered down Dauphin until the scent of fresh roasted peanuts wafting out of the A&M Peanut Shop practically yanked us in from off the street. I loved the old-fashioned vibe (please note however, the mammies for sale were at the adjoining souvenier shop. Peanuts, good. My feelings about the mammies, not so much). Dauphin Street is full of old fashioned delights — after a stroll through the park (where a pretty good band was playing, and I was chased by squirrels who wanted my A&M peanuts), we visited Three Georges, a classic candy shop founded in 1917. This place is incredible. Sitting at the bar and sipping on a tall milkshake, I felt transported to a bygone era.

<img src="http://www.afrobella.com/wp-content/afrobella%20images/spotofteaAL.jpg" alt=“Spot of Tea, AL” align="left" vspace="10" hspace="10" />

My visit to Mobile wasn’t complete without a late night dinner and drinks at Wintzell’s Oyster House. OMG the fried oysters are so, so good!

So OK – I am aware that Chapel Hill is unlike most of its surrounding environs. It’s a funky college town, where you’re less likely to see a Confederate flag and more likely to see a quirky hippie ride by on a bike. I absolutely loved it, and if I had the chance, I’d totally live there! Of course it helps that two of my BFFs, Forrest and Lydia, live there now. The photo above is of me in North Carolina, with Forrest’s kitten, Coquito. He’s also known as Murderface, and he’s got personality for days! Our visit to their home was tinged with a little sadness for me — on our move, we left my cat Max there to stay a while until we find our own place in Chicago. To drown my sorrows, Forrest took us drinkin’ all over town.

If you’re a beer drinker, NC is the place to be! We had fabulous, fabulous food and drinks at MillTown in Carrboro, a place with a brew menu as big as a high school yearbook. For even more drinks we joined the Dead Mule Club — yup, you can’t just roll into any bar and start drinking in Chapel Hill. Tucked away in a little white house with a big outdoor patio, it’s a private club you sign up to join before you can imbibe. Their whiskey selection is quite impressive! If you’re ever in the neighborhood, I highly recommend ending your evening at The Wooden Nickle Pub in Hillsborough. It’s got a fun, unusual, lively vibe, and this ain’t your everyday bar grub. I dined on steak topped with crab, and it was absolutely amazing!

Chapel Hill is also home to one of the most amazing home stores I’ve ever had the pleasure to visit — if you’re ever in town, do yourself a favor and visit A Southern Season. Imagine a Bed, Bath & Beyond, merged with Whole Foods, with a touch of Cost Plus World Market just for kicks. Oh, and they serve amazing food and there’s a full bar! Word to the wise – don’t try shopping after having a few cocktails here. You might wind up buying all kinds of stuff you didn’t mean to.

My adventures through the South helped to cure me of my ignorance. I pushed myself to open my mind – I tried new foods and made new friends. And most importantly I realized that although stereotypes might have a grain of truth in them, often it’s our attitude towards things that shape our experience. I’ll be heading back to North Carolina to get my kitty cat soon enough, and I’m already looking forward to my next journey through the southland. Already planning new places to stop by and set a spell. Southern hospitality is real, and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Are you a southern bella? Tell me about where you’re from, or your experiences there. I’d love to learn more about the rest of this vast country!

Don’t know whey they talkin’ bout
They will paint here black everyday,
But the right things they would never say…”

I had to open this post with a quote from the Mighty Sniper’s timeless song Portrait of Trinidad. Even though it was a hit in 1965, the words still ring true today. Trinidad is a beautiful island with a terrible reputation right now. I wouldn’t be a responsible blogger if I didn’t get that out of the way. But Trinidad is my homeland. Of it I am proud and glad. Despite everything, it remains an island with unparallelled music, cuisine, and cultural experiences to be enjoyed.

I was born and raised in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and I lived in Trinidad until 1998. In my college days I made it back home pretty often, but ever since I joined the ranks of the employed (and then the unemployed), it became more difficult to get back home. Not having spring, summer, or winter break will do that to you.

Before this past Mother’s Day, the last time I’d been home was 2006, Before Afrobella. Just last Christmas I broke Mama Bella’s heart by not being able to make it home for Christmas. Then came Carnival and I had to dash her hopes yet again. Then my husband and I quit the jobs that were holding us back from following our dreams. Needless to say, after that a trip to Trinidad was not on the horizon. So when my dad suggested a surprise trip home for Mother’s Day, it was impossible to resist. After all, I was about to move from sunny Miami to the Windy City – I needed to soak up the tropical rays and family love while I could!

It turned out to be impossible to contain the excitement in my close-knit, chatty family. Mama Bella’s Mother’s Day surprise wasn’t exactly a surprise… but I know I made her very happy nonetheless. I spent some much-needed family time and got back to basics. It was lovely.

Going home feels like returning to an old self. In so many ways — even my skin and hair rebelled against the 90 degree temperatures, leaving me looking like a crazy-haired spotty teenager. No matter. I was there for fun, sun, family, and good food. While I was visiting, it hit me — how on EARTH had I never written an Afrobella guide to Trinidad before? Saying “my bad” feels like an understatement. Without further ado, here are my top five favorite places in Trinidad and Tobago. Excluding my house because that’s too obvious. =)

1. Maracas Beach. I’m convinced Trinis don’t always realize how good they have it. 80 degree temperatures year round. Lush green mountains and sparkling blue waters. Nonstop fun and great food to be discovered, if you know where to look. Maracas Beach is a great place to start for all of the above, and it’s a must for any first time visitor to T&T.

The roads are steep, winding and can be unpredictable (beware of landslides and crazy drivers!). But the vista at the lookout point will absolutely take your breath away. Maracas is a beautiful beach, but people don’t just go there to wiggle their toes in the sand. Oh no. Maracas is the famous home of bake and shark.

WPvideo 1.10

Click ahead to 2:35 to begin the Maracas segment. And please note that the worldly Travel Channel Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern saw fit to call it “the best fish sandwich I’ve ever eaten…one of my all time top ten favorite foods, not just of this trip, not just of this year. Ever.” So you don’t just have to take it from me, take it from a man with a truly adventurous palate. The New York Times also called it “just about the best fish sandwich in the world.” I agree completely. This humble fried fish sandwich is a fine reason to beeline for the beach. Most people head straight for Richard’s, undoubtedly the most popular venue. But there’s always an insane line at Richard’s. Besides his, there are a dozen or so stands, and my dad introduced me to his favorite – Uncle Sam’s. His bake & shark is to die for, trust! Laden it with as many condiments as you can stand — pickled cucumbers, tamarind sauce, mango chutney – the list is endless. One bite and you’ll be hooked for life!

2. The Savannah. For architecture, flora, and yes – good food (this is a theme you’ll notice throughout), you can’t miss a trip around the Savannah. Actually you probably won’t be able to miss a trip around the Savannah in general — at 260 acres, it’s touted as “the world’s largest roundabout.” The Savannah is home to the Magnificent Seven — turn of the century mansions that reflect the skill, craftsmanship and creativity of Trinidad’s architects and developers. It’s also home to the Emperor Valley Zoo, which when I last visited was in such a glum state I wished with my whole heart I could buy it, restore it to glory, and bring some joy and dignity to the animals that must be so unhappy to live there. It’s a heartbreaking experience for an animal lover, and I sincerely hope the government invests money into Trinidad’s languishing cultural landmarks, including the zoo, the Botanic Gardens, and the museum. It’s been reported that a renovation has been planned and I sincerely, sincerely hope it comes to fruition. OK, off soapbox. Tour guide hat back on.

<img src="http://www.afrobella.com/wp-content/afrobella%20images/allsaintscoconuts.jpg" alt=“All Saints Church, Trinidad” align="left" vspace="10" hspace="10" />

The Savannah is another spot for unique cuisine and cultural experiences. At Carnival it is the blazing epicenter of the costume and steelpan competitions. It’s home to Apsara, the Indian restaurant rated #1 in the country according to Trip Advisor. And it’s the best place to come for coconut water straight from the nut, and for Indian delicacies like pholourie and saheena.

This photo captures two things I sincerely miss about home — All Saints Church, the church I grew up attending. I can honestly say the priest I had there as a child, was the coolest, most interesting, wonderful priest I could ever have hoped for. Father Winston Joseph can now be found in West Palm Beach at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and if you’re in the area and looking for a house of worship, I heartily encourage you to check him out! I miss good ol’ All Saints, and coconut water. I could go for a fresh, cold coconut water right this minute! That’s gonna be REALLY hard to find in Chicago!

3. St. James. Tony Bennett might have left his heart in San Francisco, but mine may be wandering somewhere around St. James, drinking rum at Smokey & Bunty or Arthur’s Place — RIP, Mr. Goddard — or somewhere on Western Main Road buying a roti. Trinis affectionately call it the city that never sleeps, but anyone who’s been to the Big Apple (or any other major city in the world) will find that title amusing. Still, it’s undeniable that something crazy and probably drunken is poppin’ off in St. James at any hour of the night or early morning. My trip home isn’t complete without a drive through, just for the people watching.

<img src="http://www.afrobella.com/wp-content/afrobella%20images/smokiecopy.jpg" alt=“Smokey & Bunty, Trinidad” align="left" vspace="10" hspace="10" />

4. Woodbrook. If you’re looking for fine dining of any kind, this neighborhood should be your first port of call. There’s Italian, Chinese, and other cuisines common to the Western palate… but why eat stuff you can get anywhere in the world? When in Trinidad, I enjoy as much Trini food as possible. I haven’t been to Woodford Cafe in a while, but I’ve always enjoyed my meals there. I love the vibe at Sweet Lime. And on my last visit I fell head over heels with Veni Mange, the quirky, colorful, vibrant restaurant owned by cultural icon Allison Hennessey and her fantastic sister Roses Hezekiah. It’s all about tropic ambiance — art explodes off the wals and even the tables and chairs are painted, and the jalousies add an old time Trini touch that I loved. I’m mad at myself that I didn’t order the chip chip cocktail (even Fodors gave it a mention!) but I loved the stewed beef and dumplings I ordered. Another awesome New York Times review makes me want to go back. Their callaloo really is to die for.

5. Tobago. In general. It is with great regret that I admit that I haven’t been back to Tobago since my honeymoon (which as of this week was seven years ago)! I’ve been meaning to go back ever since. Trinidad is built up and busy. Tobago remains a beachy, laid back jewel of an island. I miss it. Store Bay is the place for local souveniers and Tobago’s culinary specialty, curry crab and dumpling. Glass bottom boats take tourists out to the coral reefs from the beach at Store Bay and the gorgeous Pigeon Point, it’s an enjoyable trip even for a non-seafarer like me.

There are lush accomodations to be found in Tobago for sure. If you’re looking to live the lavish life complete with cocktails on the beach, I highly recommend <a href=http://www.cocoreef.com/home.asp">the stunning Coco Reef. I assure you, it can provide the idyllic island escape of your dreams. For nature lovers looking for a more rustic experience, I urge you to check out the ArnosVale Hotel. At 4 p.m. every day the hotel offers a truly amazing high tea that bird watchers the world over flock to witness. Set high in the thickly vegetated hillside, the restaurant’s balcony features a long, deep trough that is filled with fruit. Birds from all over the island come to enjoy the bounty. I’m talking about brightly colored, beautiful songbirds the likes of which you hardly ever see! It’s something to be experienced, for sure.

<img src="http://www.afrobella.com/wp-content/afrobella%20images/arnos511_tobago.gif" alt=“ArnosVale, Tobago” align="left" vspace="10" hspace="10" />

And there you have it – some of my favorite spots in Trinidad and Tobago. It’s smart to visit just about any of these places with a large group, as much as I hate to admit it, my homeland isn’t as safe as it used to be. But if you’re a smart, savvy traveler with your head on your shoulders and the brains to be aware of your surroundings, stash your money safely and flash your wealth at your own risk — you should be just fine.

It must be noted that I’m from Port of Spain AKA “the West,” so I know I’ve left out a legion of fantastic places to visit throughout the rest of Trinidad. And Tobago, for that matter. All the more reason for me to go back home soon! For even more Trini delights, check out this stunning NY Times multimedia feature. I’d LOVE to hear feedback from my fellow Trinis in the comments — where did I forget to mention? Where should I visit next time I come home? What did I miss?

2009 really has been the year of change I intended it to be.

Finally, I’m in Chicago after traveling everywhere from New York City to Trinidad. And finally I realize — I’ve got some travel writing to do! I will admit, I waited a while in the hopes that I could somehow publish my adventures in one of my favorite magazines… but the time’s come to be honest with myself. Print journalism is in a steep, scary downward spiral and the prospects of freelancing are dry, dry, dry. I figure, if it has to be, it’s up to me. And so I’d like to welcome you to travel week on Afrobella. If you’ve read any of my travel guides before, you know what to expect. Fun, honest reviews of the hot spots I’ve visited. Come with me!
