As a teenager, I looked forward to my future with high hopes for clear skin. After all, we’re told that acne is a teenage problem, caused by bad food and oily skin and roiling hormones. At one point in my life I honestly believed that turning 20 would end my acne issues. And then I thought…maybe by age 25 this will be over. OK. Maybe 30. And now here I am at age 33, telling you the sad truth. Adult acne is real. Things usually get better, but if you’ve grown up dealing with breakouts, you’ll occasionally have to deal with them when you’re grown enough to be dealing with stuff like taxes and mortgages and kids.

Photo via Blinging Beauty

Now that I’m an adult, I know exactly what triggers my acne. I’m more likely to get breakouts after periods of eating badly, or spending too much time in the sun. Recently when I had a facial, the aesthetician was able to tell that I sleep on my left side and that I don’t always take off my makeup, “because the blackheads on that side of your face are so deep.” YIKES. Some of my acne issues are clearly my own fault. Other issues are caused by my hormonal cycle, my stress level, and other factors I have less control over. It can be hard to know how to deal with those kinds of acne issues.

Let’s clear this one thing up right here right now — the best way you can deal with adult acne is by tackling it internally by drinking more water, exercising and eating healthier, and finding a dermatologist. More often than not, we deal with skin issues by going to a spa for a facial or buying some over the counter product instead of dealing with things medically, and that’s really the most sensible way to deal with it — click here to find a dermatologist in your city. Personally, I’m taking a varied approach to the issue. Recently I visited a derm for the first time — more on that soon! I eat healthier than I used to, and I drink more water than I used to. I’m trying to deal with my acne internally, but externally I still need some extra help. And so I also still go for facials, AND I use over the counter acne products that include approved ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and salycilic acid to deal with the pimples I get, as I get them. Allow me to tell you about my favorite at-home acne brands!

Mario Badescu — OK so I know I’ve raved on and on (and on) about Mario Badescu, but I LOVE their products. The second I get a zit, I reach for their Drying Lotion or Drying Mask. If I’ve already got a zit that’s erupted, I love the Buffering Lotion. My only issue with MB products is, I haven’t yet tried one that goes on clear and works under makeup. These are products for if you’re at home and want to dry up a blemish overnight. Click here to check out Mario Badescu’s acne products.

Murad — I’m a fan of the brand in general, but Murad actually makes a product to help with the issue. Murad Acne Anti-Aging Acne Treatmenttackles both blemishes and wrinkles, and claims to smooth fine lines and restore suppleness as well. All of this basically means it’ll get rid of your zits without totally depleting your skin of moisture, as acne products can so often do.

Clean and Clear — I may drift away and try other, more expensive products, but if I’ve got a zit and I’m out of town and don’t have my go-to’s, best believe I will buy a tube of Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 from any store I can. Recently when a close friend of mine got like her third pimple ever in life, this is what I told her to buy. Good ol’ Clean and Clear will never do you wrong.

Neutrogena — I’d say that Neutrogena is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to drugstore skincare. Their Oil-Free Acne Wash was THE must-have face wash for my teenage acne days. And still to this day I’ll use it, or the newer Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment Power-Foam Wash which has a super long name but works really, really well.

Olay – When I think Olay, I don’t usually think acne — more moisture or cleansing or anti-aging, right? Well yes, but they also make a range of acne fighting products, including the Olay Professional Pro-X Clear Acne Protocol Kit, which is tailor made for adult acne. It’s a three part system involving a cleanser, a clearing treatment, and a renewing lotion. And Pro-X also makes a refining sulfur mask, for those of you who like masks for dealing with acne. (PS: These are my favorite face masks). (PPS: did you know aspirin makes an excellent at home acne mask? It’s basically salycilic acid! Click to learn more via BlackHairMedia.com).

Et voilà, my go-to, tried and true product faves for dealing with acne as a grown woman. Bellas, how do YOU deal with adult acne?

She’s drop dead gorgeous and has a killer body – as evidenced by her sexy scenes in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (yeah, my husband loved that movie). She’s married to the musical deliciousness that is Robin Thicke. Her career is on fire and her last four films were all hits – Precious, Just Wright, Jumping The Broom, and the latest installment of Mission Impossible. Paula’s box office mojo is undeniably rising. And now, she’s the newest Cover Girl, reppin’ for the Queen Collection.

However, where one might feel inclined to feel at all jealous of how awesome it must be to be Paula Patton, I don’t feel that way. Not at all. Because she’s so incredibly, genuinely likable and nice. During a recent phone interview, it was like neither of us wanted the conversation to end. I said conversation and not interview, because that’s kinda how she made me feel – she’s very comfortable and easy and girlfriendy and sweet. Paula Patton isn’t a diva who makes you feel like you’re presenting her with questions that she’ll flatly answer. She’s interested and engaged and might turn the tables and ask a question about you, instead. I loved talking with her!

It totally makes sense that Paula Patton would be a Cover Girl – she fits really well into the brand’s current roster of celebrities. Most Cover Girls are women known for their talent and personality and beauty – you know a little, but not a lot about their private lives, as it should be. Cover Girls are actresses, activists, women who are generally runnin’ thangs. And that isn’t the only thing Paula, Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Ellen DeGeneres and Sofia Vergara have in common. “All of the women Cover Girl has chosen as representatives are beautiful, kind, smart, funny women that you’d love to have lunch with. Queen Latifah knew I’d love to be involved and it’s been such a dream come true!”

Paula’s connection with Cover Girl began with her friend – and Just Wright costar – Queen Latifah. Paula described Queen as a mentor, and she’s super proud to represent her friend’s makeup collection. Paula’s earliest makeup memories began as most of ours do – with watching her mom beautify herself. “My mom was a schoolteacher for 32 years, and she always went to school in heels I loved playing dress up as a girl, but my mom was quite strict. I got my first lipstick when I was 14! Then I broke out in high school and it became all about coverage.”

Life has changed a lot for Paula Patton in the last two years or so – her film offers are increasingly high profile, and her husband Robin Thicke has been doing amazingly well in his career as well. And they’re parents to an adorable baby boy. I had to ask Paula what it’s like to deal with so many life changes. “It’s been overwhelming. I don’t know if my life has changed…but opportunities arise that you never thought would come your way. I’m still the same person and I have the same goals and ambitions. But I really didn’t dream this big.”

Increased success has meant increased awareness for Paula Patton, and now she has goals in place to pave the way for those who seek to follow her lead. “One thing that’s really important to me….I need to take the time and make the effort to create more opportunities for black actors, Latin actors, Asian actors. I want to make movies that give more people more opportunities.” When Paula received her award at Essence Magazine’s Women in Film Luncheon, she made mention of the same desires.

How does a woman like Paula Patton balance life and love, with a husband who’s also on the top of his game? “We’re really lucky cause we’ve known each other for so long…we’re adults now and we’ve had a lot of fun together. Right now we have to grind to set up a future for our son. We make everything we do, a partnership. When I’m working on a film he’ll read me lines and guide me – we have a creative partnership. You have to listen and not be hard-headed.”

What’s a typical day for Paula Patton when she isn’t on set? It’s very family oriented. “I wake up at 7 am for breakfast with Julian….we go to the park, then he takes a nap and mommy writes e mails and tries to do work. Then he’s up and we do an activity – go to the museum, something educational and fun. Then we come back home for dinner and bedtime at seven. Oh and I have to get in a workout – yoga, a run, something. It’s a stress relief for me. It clears my head.”

Because our interview was primarily about beauty and makeup, I had to ask Paula what makes her feel the most beautiful. “Oh gosh, I’m so corny but….when I’m happy, I feel more beautiful. I’m not perfect, I go through ups and downs. But I try to remember what I’m thankful for and draw joy from that. And in terms of the physical, I take care of myself, I drink water and green tea, I eat healthy. And for me, putting on a little lipstick, blush and mascara….makes me feel better about myself.”

Paula has her favorite Cover Girl products – she loves the Queen Collection Natural Hue Concealer. Her favorite Cover Girl lipsticks are Powderpuff Pink and says, “I love to do a great, bright lip and then leave the blush alone. It’s my new favorite look.” Besides Powderpuff Pink, she loves her reds and cites South Beach Sand and Cheeky Flipstick at favorites. And in her great videos with the incredible makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff, they demonstrate the easiest, breeziest ways to be a beautiful Cover Girl.

In video #1, Ashunta demonstrates a “golden glow” using primer, natural tones and a soft shimmer on the lips.

And video #3 is all about a bangin’, bold eye look. Which you KNOW I love!

In my line of work, products come and go. Sometimes you find one you really like and you keep it in the arsenal. More often than not you find products that are practically interchangeable. And every so often, once in a blue moon…you find one of those holy grail products you want to shout from the mountaintop about. Bellas, I have found that in Mario Badescu. I know, I know. If you read this blog you’ve heard me refer to this classic skincare line as my skincare savior.

I can’t say that there’s been a single product in their extensive product line that I haven’t loved. But amongst all of Mario Badescu’s products, there are a few that keep me coming back to the veteran skincare brand again and again (BTW you can click here to learn about the brand’s history). Three products come most immediately to mind.

– Drying Lotion, an ESSENTIAL spot treatment product for anyone who deals with acne.

– Drying Mask, colloidal sulfur based mask that dries up all my acne

– and Enzyme Cleansing Gel, which is Mario Badescu’s best selling cleanser for a REASON.

If you’re used to a cleanser that’s all foamy and creamy, Mario Badescu’s Enzyme Cleansing Gel might throw you for a loop. This is a green, non-foaming gel cleanser chock full of Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Made with papaya and grapefruit extracts, this isn’t the kind of cleanser you turn to when it’s time to remove makeup. For makeup removal I usually use a wipe or cleansing oil, THEN wash with my beloved Enzyme Cleansing Gel.

I really LOVE it with my Clarisonic brush (product directions even say “massage in a circular motion,” so hey). What do I love about it? It’s a relatively simple product. In other aspects of my life I’m trying to take a less is more approach. When it comes to my diet, I try to keep clean food and healthy eating in mind. Same goes for my skincare. If you’re like me and are seeking products with fewer ingredients, this cleanser will make you happy – there are just seven ingredients used in making MB’s Enzyme Gel Cleanser.

I’m still dealing with occasional breakouts and acne issues, but this cleanser makes my skin feel so fresh and so clean, and more than anything else it’s improved the radiance of my skin. Enzyme Gel Cleanser has helped to balance my skin, to reduce the dull appearance my face gets after not exfoliating or cleaning off all my makeup. It’s my every day go-to must-have facewash du jour.

8 oz. will cost you $12 and 16 oz. will cost you $20 – but it’s not the kind of product you wind up using a ton of. I use a dime-sized dot every day and I’m good! So a full 16 oz bottle can last you a WHILE. Plus, if you order off the Mario Badescu website, you get a bunch of free samples of your choice – check em out. I hope you know I wouldn’t put you wrong! No hyperbole needed – Mario Badescu remains my skincare savior. And you deserve to try this stuff out!

What’s YOUR favorite facewash du jour?

Beautiful bellas, I’m on vacation! When I left Chicago, it was snowing. When I landed in Miami, it was chillier than expected, with temperatures in the 50′s. And now I’m visiting my homeland of beautiful Trinidad and Tobago, where the heat has been in the high 80′s!

My skin is like, what are you DOING to me?

For each temperature zone I’m in, I’ve noticed changes in my skin’s appearance. In the cold, my skin felt dry and looked really tight around my nose and mouth. In Trinidad I’m greasy and sweaty. Clearly my skincare needs are not one-size fits all! Let me tell you how I deal with changing seasons of skincare, and what I recommend for transitioning from a cold temperature to warmer climes. After all, there’s a reason fashion designers release resort collections of fun, fabulous dresses in light fabrics — that reason could well be called January, and the need to escape the winter blahs.

1 — Going on a trip? Increase your water intake. I know I tend to go on and on about the need to drink more water, but there’s a reason. Nothing I’ve tried topically has made such a tangible difference to my skin. You can use all of the treatments, ointments, cremes and serums money can buy, but if you’re drinking nothing but sugary juices and soda (yep, even diet) it will result in skin that is prone to breakouts and less than luminous. Drinking more water gives my skin the internal hydration it needs to transition from temperature to temperature without totally freaking out. And if you’re like me and hate drinking water, you can drink flavored “spa” water — check out this cool recipe for “Sassy water” that I found on Pinterest! I am totally trying this flavor combination out!

For even more flavor sugggestions, read this helpful article from xoJane, offering survival tips for those of us who gag at the prospect of drinking plain ol’ water.

2 — Time to tone. Skincare confession time — I’m not a regular user of toner and astringent, and I do often beat myself up over that…but when my skin starts acting up, using a toner after I cleanse helps to restore my skin’s balance to what it needs to be. Don’t think you need to pony up for a toner you won’t necessarily use — quite often, instead of brand name toners I go back to basics and use pure organic rosewater (I get it at Whole Foods) or witch hazel (which I also get at Whole Foods, and comes infused with various fragrances like lemon and lavender).

3 — Assess your skin’s needs and find a product that tackles the issues at hand. If you’re having issues with oil, find a product that has oil absorbing mattifying properties. If you’ve got tight, dry skin, look for something that promises to moisturize your skin, For myself right now, I need gentle skincare that cleanses without stripping my face of its natural oils altogether, and still gives my skin the penetrative moisture I clearly need as a woman in her early thirties.

Cindy Crawford’s Meaningful Beauty skincare line is a recent favorite, and the fact that the products are practically travel size is a WIN for me and my suitcase right now!

At night I make sure that I listen to Meagan Shea and cleanse off the day’s detritus with the Skin Softening Cleanser. And no matter if I’m in the winter cold or the tropical heat, I NEED to use a moisturizer with SPF every day, and the Meaningful Beauty Antioxidant Day Cream with SPF 20 rocks my world. Check them out at TryNewMB.com, and you can follow them on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.

That’s what has been working for me in the midst of this season of skincare changes!

How do you change your skincare routine throughout the season?

I reached out to some of my favorite brands to arrange special holiday giveaways for Afrobella readers, and I hope you love the products as much as I do!

First up on the holiday giveaway list? One of my FAVORITE skincare brands. That’d be Kiehl’s.

Kiehl’s is a skincare brand with a rich, historic legacy. Think for a second of how many businesses and brands have come and gone since 1851, when Kiehls was founded. The fact that this skincare brand has lasted for so very long speaks directly to its effectiveness. Through the years I’ve been lucky enough to try quite a few Kiehl’s products, and I’ve also been lucky enough to meet the very handsome president of Kiehl’s, Mr. Chris Salgardo — click here to follow him on Twitter!

When I met Chris we talked about our favorite Kiehl’s products (obvi) and about what makes the brand so special. Kiehls isn’t cheap, but it isn’t as expensive as high quality skincare can be. And for the money you pay, you really do get a product that works exquisitely. I’ve done quite a few reviews through the years, but let me tell you about my five favorite Kiehl’s products in 140 characters or less.

– Midnight Recovery Concentrate is everything my skin needs and more. I’m addicted to good serums and this is <a href=http://www.afrobella.com/2011/10/18/you-deserve-kiehls-midnight-recovery-concentrate/
?one of the best I've ever used.

– Rosa Arctica remains one of my favorite night creams ever, it smells like luxury and makes my skin feel so soft!

– I recently tried the Ultimate Strength Hand Salve and it totally deserves that name! Penetrating moisture when you need it most, and without a frou-frou fragrance so the fellas will like it too.

– If you have oily skin the Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleanser might be your new bestie. Amazonian White Clay and Diatomaceous Earth particles deal with the oil and grime so very well!

Last but not least, CREME DE CORPS. This will require more than 140 characters!

You know when your skin feels dry and thirsty in the winter months? When you can see the dryness on your legs or your arms? That’s what Creme de Corps is FOR. I use it sparingly — not just because it’s pricey, but also because it’s so rich and luxurious that you don’t need a ton of lotion to moisturize your situation. It smells divine and feels even better. And in the spirit of holiday giving, I’ve got a Kiehls Creme de Corps giveaway just for YOU!

Here’s how you can win! Leave a comment below, telling me your number one winter skin dilemma. Five lucky winners will get an 8.4 oz bottle of Creme de Corps! This contest will be open until December 27 to contestants within the US, so you have lots of time over the holiday week to enter (and hopefully win!)

Click here to follow Kiehls on Twitter, and on Facebook. Thank you for your generosity, Kiehls!

Good luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS, bellas!

I reached out to some of the top derms in Chicago, the Midwest, and the tri-state area, and asked them the same question — “Which laser therapy treatment is most popular in your practice and why? Is there a cheaper alternative that is just as effective? What do you think the next big laser will be?” Read on to get definitive and helpful answers to inform your future skincare decisions!

Brooke Jackson, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist and Medical Director of The Skin Wellness Center of Chicago

“The most popular laser depends on what the concerns of the patient are. My biggest frustration as a laser surgeon is that no one laser does everything, treats all conditions or treats every skin type. So, for my skin of color patients, the top two problems are as follows:

1) Unwanted hair. Laser hair removal has been one of the biggest and most welcome laser advances for skin of color. I am fortunate to have been involved with studies which fine tuned the parameters for laser hair removal in skin of color. There are many lasers on the market and many wavelengths out there. Not all of them are appropriate to treat skin of color. It is crucial to go to someone who has experience in treating skin of color with lasers.

2) Discoloration is another big issue. The Fraxel Dual is the next big laser. This laser can help with discoloration due to melasma, acne scarring. Keep in mind that discoloration is caused by something and this “something ” must be treated or controlled first.

Generally you cannot compare procedures to products – it’s apples and oranges. There are no alternatives to lasers which will give you similar effect. Lasers are specifically targeted to affect the hair follicle for example. Most topical creams will not penetrate that deeply and therefore cannot be compared to procedures.”

Carolyn Jacob, MD, Director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology

“We have several lasers to treat a variety of issues, from laser hair removal, to red “broken” blood vessels, to wrinkles. We use the lasers for hair removal the most, followed by the laser to treat redness (blood vessels). There are some topical creams which help temporarily treat redness, such as Redness Relief Calmplex, or Redness Relief Skin Smoothing Cream SPF 25.

The next big device we are getting (and will be the first in the country to have it!) is a microwave technology device, called MiraDry, which reduces underarm sweating for patients who sweat there too much. It’s really amazing for excessive sweating sufferers!”

Dr. Marcy Street, founder and Medical Director of Doctor’s Approach Dermatology, a full-service medical clinic, specializing in skin cancer and Doctor’s Approach Medspa & Laser Center, East Lansing, Michigan.

“Laser hair removal is the most popular laser therapy treatment at Doctor’s Approach Med Spa & Laser Center. This particular treatment is one of the most well-liked options on the market for a more permanent solution to hair removal… The laser at Doctor’s Approach works for permanent hair reduction in ethnic practices.

Laser hair removal is the most effective way to get rid of unwanted hair. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, shaving and waxing are temporary solutions to this problem, but can add up in price. Be sure to use a new razor and shave in the direction of your hair growth. It is also important to exfoliate before shaving and use a good moisturizer once you have finished. Waxing can be tricky. Make sure your hair is long enough so the wax does not damage your skin and test a small patch on the skin before waxing the entire area.

There are many lasers on the market. Not all are effective on ethnic skin. Be sure to do your homework to make sure the office is reputable. “

Dr Nadia Chaudhry of HOPE Integrative Health, New Jersey

“We perform laser treatments everyday, thousand of procedures for every skin type, safely. Laser hair removal and ingrown hairs very popular, gives our clients the gift of time and healthier brighter skin to boot. We use lasers to reverse aging, eradicate wrinkles, dark circles and tone and tighten skin as well slow dow the aging process. Creating Healthy skin – rebuilding the foundation is our passion and purpose here at Hope. If you are looking for definitive long term solutions for healthy clear younger skin, then this is the most cost effective method – it actually saves you money on products, peels, facials, waxing, time and energy. Its wonderful to wake up in the morning and have a very simple beauty regimen, no plucking, waxing, hiding behing makeup (dark circles and hyperpigmentation) -cause you wake up looking luminous healthy and vibrant every day!

They have great lasers already out- unfortunately most laser places do not carry the best equipment, there is a cookie cutter approach to treating all skin types and they are not highly trained or experienced in synergizing lasers for various clinical applications. Skin of color clients have to really
be careful where they go for laser hair treatments- there is a high degree of risk if they lack experience and expertize. Also facial sculpting is an art form that belongs in someone doing advanced techniques everyday – when treating undereye circles and creating “sweetheart faces”, customizing for every individual is critically important so you are making wise investments. There is a new laser called the thulium laser- a different wavelength which looks like it may be very helpful for hyperpigmentation for skin of color that I am excited to test out!”

I’m still on the fence about whether or not I want to give laser treatments a try. I would love for my back to be hyperpigmentation free, and not worrying about shaving anymore would be AMAZING. But from every doctor’s advice so far, it still seems that it’s best to really shop around for the best of the best before getting laser therapy, especially if you’ve got darker skin. Invest in finding the best person for the job first. Better to be safe, than left with regrets.

What are your thoughts and experiences? Have you had laser treatments before?

If you have a professional makeup artist in your life, consider yourself BLESSED, bellas. Professional MUAs work so hard for the money. The makeup artists I know and respect take their craft SO seriously. They will spend all day on their feet at a shoot to get the right look. They sometimes have to sacrifice time with their friends and family in order to pay the bills. It can be a glamorous life but don’t be fooled — it’s hard work!

Makeup artists can sometimes seem hard to shop for. What do you buy the makeup artist in your life, for Christmas? If you’re a professional MUA, what do you need or want as a present to further your craft? I turned to Afrobella’s resident makeup artist, the one and only Meagan Shea, for an ultimate holiday guide for the professional makeup artist.

Take it away, Meagan Shea!!

Hello Bellas! Happy Holidays! It’s the time of the year to give gifts to your loved ones, and maybe even people you share a cubicle with. It is also the time to receive gifts, which we ALL love. I mean seriously, who doesn’t love to get gifts – especially during the holiday season? I’ve decided to give you bellas a glimpse into the wishlist of a makeup artist. The desires of my heart for this holiday, with hopes that Santa Claus himself will read this. He knows I’ve been nice and not naughty, right?

I have two lists. One is all about work, things I need and/or want to ensure I continue to do my job effectively (I’m good at making this seem like it’s not about getting gifts, right? HA!). The other list is focused on relaxation and pampering. People seem to think being a makeup artist is easy work… WRONG! It’s strain on your back, feet, knees, patience and then some. Often, as women we fail to find the time to take care of ourselves. It’s time to take our lives back (from who I don’t know, but we need to get it back. LOL)!

Enjoy! Even if you don’t have a makeup artist to share with this season maybe you’ll see something that you like for yourself, or your momma, your cousin, your mail lady, your hair stylist – SOMEBODY!

Most makeup artists will agree with me when I say that you can never have too many brushes. It’s always good to have duplicates, extras and a few sets. By doing this you give yourself options. I’m a woman who appreciates having options, ya know? I love MAC brushes – they are awesome! However, the full set is a whopping $1065.50!!! THERE’S NO WAY – well maybe over time, but not in one sitting. I’d rather go on vacation!

I am BIG fan of bdelliumtools, they are based out of a city very close to where I grew up. Our high school football teams were rivals (GO BUCS!!!). I support local business – all the way! Here’s a 24 piece brush set for $148.50. That’s a GREAT deal, mainly because the brushes are really made well. The quality of the brushes are amazing & their brushes are treated with an antibacterial agent on the bristles. That’s totally AWESOME, right?

I love this holiday set from Royal & Langnickel as well. This one is $90 and it’s a 12 piece set that comes with a FREE (YES I SAID FREE!) promo gift! It comes with a free retractable brush set – I want that for myself!

Of course as an artist we need something to tote our magical secrets around in. I have had such “interesting” experiences traveling with my makeup in tow, that I know it’s a lot easier when things are compartmentalized securely. With the <a href="http://www.zuca.com/store/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=650&category_id=9cbab5522506cc634aa3143e88294675&PHPSESSID=cn8f0jp2gh6hap3o3r52ram3i6"_blank">Zuca Pro you won’t have to worry about your kit being a hot mess when you open your bag, not to mention it also can be used as a seat! That’s awesome, TRUST ME – IT IS REALLY AWESOME! The Zuca Pro is $295 and believe me when I say the artist in your life will be VERY pleased with their gift.

Zuca Pro in Midnight Blue & Black

<a href="http://glamcor.com/professional/light-kits/glamcor-classic-light-kit-54.html"_blank">GlamCor has a lighting set that would come in really handy on set. Sometimes, you’re placed in an unexpected situation and the lighting on the set (whether on location or in a studio) may not be great for – let’s say, “doing your best”. This light set is amazing because it keeps all colors true and it cools down immediately, which is great for packing up and going home! The lighting set is on sale right now for $250, go have at it!

The RCMA foundation palettes are a staple for artists. They last forever, have very full coverage and a wide array of colors. They are great for mixing and even have a foundation thinner to sheer them out if you’re not looking for heavy coverage. They are small, easy to tote around and blend well. The most popular palettes are the Shinto and the KO palette, each at $215.99 (HERE) – although I found them for $195 (HERE). YAY FOR BUDGET SHOPPING!

An airbrush machine will make any artists’ life easier, as it will make the application process a lot more flawless and quick. I asked a few of my makeup sistren and according to them the top two airbrush systems are made by Kett Cosmetics for $467 and TEMPTU for $435. I found that both brands have an introductory kit which is great to start out. The TEMPTU kit is sold out on their website, but I found it on AMAZON for over $20 LESS!!! It’s $411.26 on Amazon – go scoop it up!

Are you just looking for a stocking stuffer? Maybe something a wee bit smaller? Try the En’Kore finger palette! It’s only $10 & is adorable! It’s awesome for mixing concealer, lip colors, pigments – and did I mention it was ADORABLE! I can tell you firsthand, it can be messy and annoying to mix things on the back of your hand all the time. I have ruined many blouses and smudged colors on my own face. NOT WINNING! LOL I also heard through the grapevine that En’Kore will be releasing a “cuff’lette” – a palette that you can wear on your wrist for mixing! LOVE IT!!! I cannot wait to get my hands on that when it hits the public.

Now onto goodies for self care. This is important. VERY VERY IMPORTANT. This is actually when I really need Santa to tune into Afrobella. First artists’ are standing for long periods of time. Some of them do it in stilettos & super high heels. I commend them. I would love a pair of Dankso Professional Clogs! I’ve heard they are great. I want a pair, and it’s that simple. I like these blue ones. Of course they aren’t super duper haute couture, but I’m okay with myself. I’ll rock them, with joy! They are $135 and I’m sure they are that price for a reason. If they’re good enough for a nurse, I’m sure they’ll work for me. Although I secretly like the way they look. LOL

Dansko Professional Clogs in Blue Patent Leather

ALL makeup artists should have a digital camera! We need them to snap behind the scenes shots of our work, and create videos. If you’re going to get one, may as well get a cute one that gets GREAT reviews. I like the Nikon Cool Pix S9100 in RED. This camera is listed for many prices, however I found it for $279.95. Even if you aren’t a makeup artist, you should get this camera – it’s AWESOME. Did I mention it was really cute?

Nikon Cool Pix S9100 in Red

This gift I’ve been eyeing for YEARS! It’s the Clarisonic Facial Cleansing Brush and it works WONDERS! This is another one of those gifts that no matter WHAT you do for a living, you should own. It made this list because makeup artists usually wear makeup regularly (some wear more than others) and we have to make sure we are caring for our skin properly and thoroughly. This tool will make that so much easier, there’s no excuse to not wash every ounce of makeup off of your face. It also exfoliates the skin on your face (removing dead skin cells and allowing skin to breathe), reduces pore size, and it feels great when you clean your face. The Clarisonic is a little pricey (the original system is $195, however the “Mia” which I’ve included a link to is only $119), but if you use it just ONE time – YOU WILL BE HOOKED! It’s an investment and we should all invest in our beauty.

Clarisonic Mia Limited Edition Colors

Another really cool gift for the artist in your life (or yourself) is an Apple Ipad 2. I really don’t need to say much about this, we all know they are amazing. It’s great for artists’, because it’s quick and easy way to share our portfolios with others right on the spot. It could be the link to an amazing job or connection if the other party can see your work immediately. Think about it. They start at $499 and are worth every penny.

Apple Ipad 2

Lastly, if you’re just looking for a quick gift that will help your favorite artist to relax and find a way to pamper themselves, check this gift basket out. I actually want one of these myself. I LOVE fresh lavender scented bath products and you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home to be pampered. Lavender will relax the mind and really helps you to have a peaceful nights sleep. Art of Appreciation sells this basket for $69 and you get so much stuff! It’s a great gift idea, for anyone (as long as they don’t have any health issues that would be affected by certain essential oils).

Art of Appreciation Lavender Aromatherapy Gift Basket

Anyone and everyone will benefit from this gift. A gift certificate to a local spa for some hands on pampering. Sometimes, you just have to do this for yourself. After receiving spa services (facial, pedicure, manicure, or massage) you just feel so rejuvenated and ready to take on the world. Or take a nap, then take on the world. If you aren’t sure where to go or which spa to choose, you can always go to SpaWeek.com and get a gift certificate that allows the person you’re purchasing it for select their own spa. How cool is that! If you don’t like any of these gift ideas, just get the makeup artist close to you a week long vacation to a Caribbean island. I mean, I’m pretty sure they’ll appreciate that too. Ha!

Bellas, enjoy the rest of your holiday! If you guys purchase or receive any of these gifts, PLEASE stop back and let me know how you like them. Oh and if you see Santa, let him know what I’m asking for this year. I haven’t seen him yet, they returned the letter I sent him and he won’t answer my text messages! I promise I’ve been a good girl this year… *wink* Remember to try something new, you never know what you’ll like until you try it! If it’s makeup, it’ll wash off.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!! See you next year.

Beauty is about so much more than just the surface. Yes, layers of carefully applied makeup can help to improve the appearance, but the definition of beauty goes beyond that. When I first heard the name of Cindy Crawford’s new skincare line, I felt immediately attracted to the name, the concept, and of course the spokesperson. Cindy! I’ve been a fan since House of Style! And she still looks AMAZING to this day.

Meaningful Beauty is all about anti-aging skincare that is gentle and most of all, effective. Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh and Cindy Crawford have collaborated to share their skincare secrets with the world, creating a complete, multi-step approach to transforming your skin and reducing the visual effects of aging. I’ve had the chance to use some of the Meaningful Beauty products for a few weeks now, and I’ll break down my favorites for you!

Meaningful Beauty’s Skin Softening Cleanser is perfect for anyone with problem skin who needs a gentle cleanser to remove the daily debris. Creamy and white, gentle and nourishing – it’s the kind of cleanser that works best with a washcloth or face brush (loving it with my Clarisonic).

For anyone looking for more hardcore cleansing that focuses on wiping away layers of old skin to reveal a fresh, glowing, youthful visage, try the Glycolic Treatment Pads — they’re for night time use and after you use them, don’t wash your face. The pads are incuse with alpha hydroxy acid, witch hazel extrace, and Meaningful Beauty’s blend of green tea, grape seed and jasmine, plus chamomile, aloe and lavendar to calm the skin. When I use these and wash my face the next day, my skin is incredibly soft and radiant. I’m also using it on my neck, and I LOVE it.

If you’re into serums, this skincare line is about to be your latest obsession. Meaningful Beauty is ALL about the serums!

glowing serum

The Glowing Serum is described as the “model secret” and it’s a rosy pink, creamy serum that smells divine and feels luxurious on the skin.

The Creme Serum is my favorite. It doesn’t have the fragrance factor of the Glowing Serum, but I’m kind of obsessed with skincare serums that have those cool stripes in the bottle (I know, I’m so silly! But I love it because it looks ~fancy~) and besides looking fancy, it makes my skin feel like buttah. My neck is so soft, smooth and supple from using it. Love!

Click here to check out Meaningful Beauty and see if it’s the skincare solution you need to kick off 2012 with clear, beautiful skin.

This week, I was one of eleven bloggers tapped to participate in Meaningful Beauty’s 11 Meaningful Moments From 2011. It was a lovely way to give back to a cause I believe in, and a lovely opportunity to reflect on what beauty means to me. I hope you like my video, and my meaningful beauty moment of 2011!

Why do people go to the dermatologist? What sends you to a search engine near you to find an office and make an appointment? There are so many factors at play. Maybe a weird mole or discoloration or rash is causing you concern. Maybe you want to have a tattoo removed. Maybe you’re interested in fillers or injectables. Who do you make an appointment with? As it turns out, that entirely depends on your needs.

There are two basic kinds of dermatology. Medical dermatology (also sometimes known as dermasurgery), and cosmetic dermatology.

Dr. Carolyn Jacob of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology broke it down for me like this: “Board certified dermatologists complete a residency in dermatology after their med school and internship. They then pass their board certification test. Any Derm can call themselves a cosmetic Derm as some cosmetic procedures are taught at some residency programs. However, some of us have completed fellowship training in cosmetic, laser, and/ or skin cancer surgery and are further sub-specialized,” she said in a recent interview.

You’ll want to make an appointment with a cosmetic dermatologist if you’re investigating tattoo removal, lasers, Botox, fillers or even procedures like liposuction or face lifts. If you’ve got a more serious skin disorder, you’ll want to see a medical derm.

“A medical dermatologist focuses on issues such as skin cancer, rashes, acne and warts. You would want to visit a medical dermatologist once a year to have a full body check to make sure that you don’t have skin cancer or pre-skin cancer. A cosmetic dermatologist focuses more on esthetic issues such as wrinkles, tone and texture of the skin, sagging and undereye circles. If you have any cosmetic concerns, it is best to see a cosmetic dermatologist. However, there are many dermatologists who take pride in doing both. All dermatologists can do both but some prefer to specialize in only one or the other,” explained Amy Forman Taub, MD of Advanced Dermatology.

If you’re really serious about your skincare, it’s recommended that you become intimately familiar with both kinds of dermatologists and make those annual appointments. “Patients should visit a board certified dermatologist yearly for a mole check to look for abnormal moles and skin cancer. Seeing your dermatologist for cosmetic issues regularly helps keep your skin looking great!,” added Dr. Carolyn Jacob.

Good to know!

Have you visited a dermatologist recently? What kind of derm was it, and what made you decide to choose them?
