Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and if you’re a mom (or someone motherly) I hope you were feted to the max with all of your favorite things and I hope the day was spent in love and celebration of you! Even though Mother’s Day is now over, I still have one more giveaway in store – and this one is for the moms who read! And it’s one of the biggest ticket giveaways I’ve had!

Bellas, let me tell you all about the Sony VAIO laptop.

I’m part of the Windows Champions program, which means the good folks of Windows give me an all-access pass to some of the hottest Windows PCs, Microsoft gear and news! Right now, I’m writing this blog post on a bright pink Sony VAIO Y. I LOVE IT. And I’m not even a pink lover! I’ll tell you why I love it. But first let’s get the specs out of the way, shall we?

SONY VAIO Y: Put a true pro to work for you with a laptop that offers superior portability, performance, and power. Enjoy HD graphics on the 11.6″ LED display, ample storage for your favorite multimedia, and the muscle of a new AMD Fusion APU—all in a slim, lightweight package. Price: $599.99

Specifications: AMD Fusion E-350; 4GB RAM; 320GB hard drive; Fusion Integrated Graphics; Standards lithium-ion battery; AC adapter

OK! Here’s what I love about my Sony VAIO Y, and this may be a factor for some of you…. I’m a self admitted Windows person. Remember those commercials, I’m a MAC, I’m a PC? I’ve always been a PC. I just feel more comfortable with the platform. The family had an Apple computer as our first machine when I was VERY little, but every computer I’ve owned myself has been a PC. Everywhere I’ve worked, the office computers are PCs. I associate PCs with putting in good work and that’s what I use my Vaio for on a daily basis.

Have any of you noticed how my blog posts look more professional lately? Photos embedded in a neat row and such? That isn’t because I did some special blogger HTML course (although that might be a great idea for the future…) It can be entirely attributed to Windows Live Writer, an incredible program that came with the Vaio. You can post directly from Live Writer and it allows you to embed, resize and edit photos in your post, include a watermark, embed video and hyperlinks with extreme ease, and even set your categories and tags before posting. I was resistant at first – it takes me a while to learn anything new and techy. But once I got the hang of Live Writer, I fell in LOVE. If you’re a blogger who lacks tech skills and haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it.

The whole Windows Skydrive thing is awesome. Because I also have a Windows Phone, the photos I take with my phone are instantly accessible on the Sony VAIO laptop as well, which is SUCH an awesome tool for a blogger like me who uses her camera as phone almost always.

If you’re a traveler, this laptop is sweet. It’s so light and small and easy to travel with! It fits in a big purse. Although this is a petite laptop, the keyboard doesn’t feel all scrunched together. And if you’re using it on an airport tray table, it’s small enough that you won’t be terrified some jerk will crack it if you wind up sitting behind someone completely lacking in airplane etiquette, like this guy.

I think the Vaio was designed mainly with size, weight and portability in mind. The fact that it comes in this very girly pink color makes me think the intent was to create a machine for young women, like myself, who need a machine to work on while they’re on the go, and who are into the color and appearance of the machine they’re working on.

My only issue with the Vaio is the battery life, but hey – can someone show me a laptop that has consistently incredible battery life that doesn’t diminish over time? No, seriously – can someone? I’d love to know if one exists! The Vaio website says 5 hours 45 minutes of battery life but right now I’m experiencing substantially less than that – closer to two hours. Maybe it’s the way I’ve been using it and the  number of programs I’m running? I don’t know. All I DO know is, one lucky bella will win a pink Sony VAIO Y of their very own right here!

How do you enter, how do you win?

Leave a comment and tell me – What would YOU do with an awesome new laptop?

A lucky winner will be chosen at random and this contest will officially be open until MONDAY May 28 and a winner will be announced that week!

This contest is open to entries in the U.S.A, from readers over age 18.

If you have won a giveaway on within the last calendar year, I respectfully ask that you skip this one and wish your fellow bellas well!

Winners will be notified via e-mail, and they’ll have 48 hours to respond with their name, address and phone number — if a winner fails to respond in time, an alternative winner may be selected.

If I had my very own laptop (again) I'd be able to go anywhere with my freelance writing! I did have one, but I spilled coffee on it and now it's an 8 lb paperweight. And yes, 8 lbs is *heavy* for a laptop these days. So if I had a pretty, lightweight, pink laptop, I'd be able to get out into the sunshine or in the coffee shop to do work, because I hate being chained to the desk.

What would YOU do with an awesome new laptop? Well, I'm getting ready to have my second baby and I need a small laptop that I can take with me easily. I'd like to blog the new mom experience (during naps) and functionality and portability will be key! Also Sony is a great brand so I wouldn't have to worry about sacrificing quality due to size.

I soooo need this laptop and Im claiming thats it MINE! I would definitely use this laptop to complete tasks for the mentoring program that I've implemented for homeless women here in the City of Philadelphia. This will allow me to stay connected with mentors/mentees, sponsors, respond to emails, update our social networks when I am away from the office. Due to limited funding it is not yet feasible for me to purchase a new laptop from our budget.

What I would do if I won this amazing new laptop is scream & jump for joy!!! However after that, I'd put it to such good use and never put it down. I'm a 65 year old nurse who's employment has gone the data & wireless route. Many years there was the talk of it happening but they've finally transitioned to it. I'm an old school paper chart kind of nurse having 47 years of that way under my belt. I've adapted well to using the systems and have found enjoyment in doing so. But at home I have an old desk top which prevents me from bringing assignments home and being able to work on the fly. I'm raising my 3 young grandchildren and making that kind of purchase now just isn't doable! If I had this laptop I'd be able to bring work home, work while at events with the children and just bring an ease of form and function into our lives! Thanks so much for the opportunity & good luck to all of the Bella's!!!! This is awesome....

If I had a new laptop I'd use it for college. Times have been really hard on my family and we have trouble with buying are basic needs. I had a computer but now it does not work and my mom can not afford to buy me a new one. I live in NY so there are lots of libraries but little children and rowdy teens tend to always be there so it would be hard to concentrate. I would be so honored and happy to own an awesome new laptop because it would lessen the burden on my family.

The past 3 years, I have had 3 laptops. Each time, I got an upgrade, I gave away my old one. The first time I got an upgrade, I gave my old one to my aunt who was going through (breast cancer)chemo (SHE IS SURVIVOR). The next time, I got an upgrade, I gave it to my mom. Now mind you, giving laptops to 2 women over 60, means that I spend a lot of time doing over the phone tech support. I wouldn't have it any other way. I have one aunt left that I would like to bless with giving her my latest upgrade. I would then use the new one to be a blogger to women that are over 40 wanting to improve all aspects of their life; singlehood, fitness and fashion!

This is such an awesome opportunity. I would be over the moon if I won this. It would replace my old VAIO that my daughters "killed" when they went on a 1am rampage and flooded my house. Our laptop is essential as we home school and I attend online college out of state. I was fortunate enough to me given a desktop model which we lovingly named "Dino (short for dinosaur)." It's old (do they even still make computers with floppy drives?) and slow, but all we have right now. A new VAIO is just what the doctor ordered!

What would I do? A better question would be what wouldn't I do? lol. I'm currently taking some classes so a new laptop would mean I wouldn't always have to wait till I get home to do work n my old desktop. I could hide in the bathroom when the kids are up, I could lie in bed and complete assignments. heck I could even sit under a shady tree to do my homework. The possibilities are endless...

If I had this laptop, I'd be able to write lesson plans with so much ease! I'll be student teaching in the spring for the first time, and am expected to write my own lessons for each day of class, which means a lot of time researching and developing activities on the computer. With this laptop I can definitely find better ways to incorporate technology in my classroom! Also, I'd love this laptop because this summer I have been given the amazing opportunity to re-make the New Jersey Women's History Website for the Alice Paul Institute -- a laptop is just the thing I need to come and go as I please, so that I can work from home or take my work to the Alice Paul site and better communicate with the women I will be working with! Thankyou for this chance!

What would I do with a new laptop? First let me say thanks for having such a wonderful contest, and giving someone the opportunity to receive a new laptop. I'm a mom that home schools so with a new laptop I would be able to continue my son's school work from home and plus learn more about the subjects that interest me, like natural hair, twitter, and blogging. I just started a small business from home where I help people apply for jobs, and I've begun a blog and I still have so much more to learn. I do almost everything from home because I use a wheelchair since 1990 after a life-changing car accident. Just like any other thing that happens in life, one must keep going and keep striving to do their best. I went back to college, got married, and had a child even though I can't walk. So I don't allow what appears to be challenges to keep me from setting new goals; and get there the best way I know how. The whole world is not accessible to persons who use wheelchairs, but laptops are my access to the world. See what I did there? I took some of life's biggest lemons and have turned them into some sweet, juicy, cool lemonade; so with a new laptop I can widen and deepen my journey into my successful internet career as a mom, wife, home schooler, entrepreneur, and blogger. I am so grateful for this opportunity Thank you Afrobella.

Her beloved little Sony laptop got destroyed during our time as foster parents last fall and the littler replacement computer we bought turns out not to have a cd drive and is driving her crazy. Winning a laptop would help me gain my mobility back in so many ways. My house was broken into last december, and my laptop that I kept on the kitchen bar, was one of the items the robber(s) took. All we have left is a desktop sitting in my husband's office upstairs, and not only we have to share it, but it's a burden for me to go up and down the stairs, I am currently pregnant and just about ready to pop. And when the baby comes, having a laptop will be even more useful since I probably won't have time to make it to the home office.

While the pink is my favorite color when I win the laptop I will be giving it to my mom. She wants something light weight to carry with her to and from work and whene she goes out of town. It seems that since I have been unemployed, everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. I've been trying to stay positive, all while looking for ways to use my gifts to generate income. I'm a young single woman who has been trying to use this time to start my own business. Recently, I started doing freelance writing, and without a computer doing this is extremely complicated. I'm in the process of starting my own business and I currently only own a desktop...which is a MAC so this new Sony laptop would help me out in more ways than one! I would use this new laptop as my mobile office because we all know it's no fun having to be stuck inside working on your desktop on a nice day if you can take a laptop outside to the beach, the coffee shop, or even in your own backyard!!!

I would to win this laptop for my mother. I love her so much she is so down to earth person and so out going. She is the strongest woman that I look to all he time. She takes care of my dad and I and puts herself last. My mother always wanted her own laptop so that she can start her own online business selling all natural caribbean products around the world. Few years ago my mother was a special education teacher helping many students learn new things each day. Years later she was diagnosed with kidney failure and was labeled as a disable patient. Now she is on dialysis mondays, wednesdays, and fridays. It breaks my heart to see her go through this but it will make her stronger. It is now very hard for my mom to find a job because of her age and what she is going through. It would be such a blessing to win this giveaway. Good Luck to anyone else to wins the giveaway!

I would put a new laptop to use by starting a blog.  I know …starting a blog is so very Cliché these days.  Just a few years ago I had my very own beauty, fashion, and hair blog but quickly noticed I loved those things but I wasn’t passionate about them. So I left it behind to the individuals who carried that passion, and vowed to read and enjoy blogs such as Afrobella.  Soon after I set out to find my true purpose, and recently discovered it has everything to do with my fight to win in spite of {insert anything struggle here…LOL}.  So a new laptop, would aid my VOICE and be something not only to help me follow my passion and purpose but also help me assist, inspire, and encourage  other women on the journey of finding the VOICE they’ve been searching for.

If you chose me as the winner of the Sony VAIO Y, I would be so grateful and it would make my life a lot easier. After 19 years of a career I liked, but not loved I decided to go back to nursing school to obtain my BS in RN nursing.. This would be a great start for my schooling as well as new career. I'm a divorced mom of two children ages 21 and 15. I have made sure they have christian values, the best education, and a lovable home to live in. By the grace of God they haven't wanted for anything. Now that they are almost out the way, I can finally pursue the career I've always wanted. I did all of this without the help of my ex-husband and living with Sickle Cell Disease. God has brought me through many things and I know He'll see me through school. Thank you Afrobella for giving someone a chance to won this great laptop. God bless Shannon Ware

I would do everything with that smart looking Sony VAIO Y!! My life and family's life is organized and managed electronically. Right now, I'm using my smartphone to do a lot of that, since my practically brand new laptop was stolen last year. I've been trying to save up for a new one, but that isn't always feasible when you're a mom as something always comes up more pressing. I love my family and sacrificing for them is not a problem at at all!!

I would love to be able to sit on the sofa and check Afrobella and the various other blogs I enjoy reading, but I am limited to standing at the kitchen counter (where my laptop is presently plugged) because the power connection is loose. Hi Afrobella! I love your blog and have been reading for a long time. This summer I am beginning work on my dissertation about working class black women and feminism. I am currently working on a very old hp mini and a new laptop would be amazing. As a part of a research position I had this year I also had the chance to work with some amazing domestic worker advocacy organizations as a part of a conference I organized. As a way of keeping the conversation going and being of service to the community that I have become a part of through my research I have started a blog ( that I am going to maintain as an informational site about domestic workers rights and my own journey to learning about the history of domestic work in my family. Having a Sony Vaio would be a great edition to my life and allow me to continue doing the work I am trying to do to share the history of Bellas everywhere! Even if I don't win thanks for everything that you do with the blog. It's truly a gift.

WOW - this contest really makes me think...besides the fact that I need a laptop I have been doing a lot of thinking - My daughter is 21 and I am encouraging her to follow her passions/dreams and not get stuck in "working on a job" as I have. Things may be a little tight for a little longer but are you happy, do you enjoy what you do daily, are you making a difference....While encouraging her I am convicted to rethink what I want to do and how I can do what I am passionate about. If I were to win a new computer, I would do multiple things. First, it would be an immense help as I am in the final stages of completing my masters program (graduate in December) and second, it would assist in my wedding planning (recently engaged). I am working full time while managing these tasks so that equates to a lot of late nights at the office because my personal laptop is quite old and slow. If I had an awesome new laptop I would definitely use for blogging, I am a fellow blogger, and the pc I have now is a complete relic, it’s so old I can’t even add additional memory to it, and that limits what I can actually do to make my blog and my blog post more professional looking, and forget about trying to load new software on my current PC it’s a no go but if I had that new Sony Vaio Y and all the power of that 4GB RAM and 320 GB Hard drive, I could create some amazing post, and the tons of images I have stored in my pictures could finally get organized, client meetings, I would so be the standout with a sleek new magenta colored laptop in a sea of dull black laptops.. I would also use this laptop for the basics such as word processing, photo editing, streaming video from the latest of fashion week, and music, I must have my music, all in all I would use this powerful laptop for everything and I would take it anywhere, I also travel, and the size of this PC is functional and portable and not to mention stylish, and for someone constantly on the go like myself that is extremely important to me. All the best, Stephanie B. in Oakland, CA

What would I do with a new laptop? So many things. I too am a blogger and have now exceeded my limit to backup on my netbook. Which by the way is a much used laptop. I write for my own two blogs, as well as do book reviews for other blogs. I also read and review other blogs and check my email. I also have started to want to do podcasts or you tube videos from my laptop as well. So wtih a new laptop I would be able to do all of those things, plus chat with my family. And put to use some of the things I have learned. And also I could let my other laptop rest, and then maybe let someone else use it. I know I won't win your laptop but I wanted to let you know what I would do with it. There are some around where I live that have been asking for a new laptop for a while though. I did not see their post. Maybe they will too and win a new laptop.

Wow. I would finally be able to write without my laptop crashing in the middle of a good scene. I'd help my husband with his web design business, and journal to my heart's content. I'd also allow my five year old to watch Good Luck, Charlie on Netflix so that my husband and I can finally watch "adult" movies on the big screen :-)

I'm a PC gal, too! This LapTop would SOOOOO come RIGHT.ON.TIME. if I were to win it. After a couple of naturalista events that I am planning/hosting, I will definitely be in need of a laptop for a busy Late Summer/Eary Fall. I am working on launching my personal blog/brand, as well as going back to school this August! I am super excited about both things and a gifted laptop would most definitely be an added bonus to kick off the latest experiences in the story that is My Life. :)

There's only 1 computer in my household, which I'm always on. I use it for everything so i'm always hogging it and at times I bring it to school with my, just because it's easier to have your own laptop than to sit and wait for someone to hop off of one in the library. I know there's times when my mom want to use the computer and i'm hogging it, and I promised myself that when I get a job I would save to buy her one for herself but I haven't gotten around to it, and that is why if I was to win this giveaway, I would give the laptop my mom. It's the least I can do.

I have been a Mac user for the last 5 years and have thoroughly loved it. However, my Mac is getting old and I need a newer model laptop because I now work as an Editor for a couple of online publications on top of being a blogger which requires that I edit photos, video and written articles for the publications I work for. Since I also do not have a TV I mainly catch my shows on Hulu as well as watch any DVD's I buy as well as a music center since I do not own a CD player. A good solid laptop is all I need and I hope to enjoy the Sony Vaio Y and put it to work!

I am super excited for the opportunity to not only travel to Africa, but to give back! I so anxious and ready for June 15th to arrive. I would like to nominate Shelbie Huff. Shelbie is a mom at only 19. She is incredibly dedicated to her 2 year old daughter, Nora, and works tirelessly to provide for her. Although Shelbie comes from a rough background, she has truly come a long way and has grown tremendously in a very short period. Nora is the reason for this. She has been Shelbie’s saving grace and guiding light since the day she was born. I first met Shelbie in Nov 2010, when she began training as a dental assistant at my practice. It was her first job. Although she lives an hour away from my office, she was always one of the first employees to arrive to work and one of the last to leave. She consistently maintained a cheerful attitude and never once complained when she was asked to do something. These personal qualities allowed her to grow incredibly quickly as an employee and as a person, in the short time she was with us. Now, at her current office of employment, Shelbie is acting as both a dental assistant and front office representative. One look at the numerous duties she performs is a testament to how hard working and dedicated she is. Now, to be honest, the previous paragraph describes many moms, not just Shelbie. So what sets her apart? Considering her background, Shelbie, by all accounts, should be a failure. But she isn’t. Life has given her reason after reason to give up. But she hasn’t. Growing up, Shelbie had a very unstable childhood, as troubles between her parents affected her in many ways. As a young teenager, Shelbie got into a lot of destructive habits (drinking, drugs, partying, etc), which got her into a lot of trouble. She cared very little about school. Her life was rapidly going in a very scary direction. Becoming a mom at 17, however, changed all of that. When Nora was born, I believe Shelbie was, herself, reborn. Since her parents were either unwilling or unable to help her much financially, and Nora’s father was denying her as his own, Shelbie knew she would be almost solely responsible for caring for her daughter. So, while many at her age were busy being kids, Shelbie took summer classes so she could graduate high school early and begin working. She took out a loan to attend dental assisting school. Once finished with school, she began training at my office, as I described previously. Shelbie’s story doesn’t end there, however. Since meeting Shelbie, I have come to know her extremely well. Throughout our friendship, I have seen her constantly pushing to make herself a better person, for the sole reason of providing a good life for Nora. As an employee, she is always looking to enhance her skills and knowledge in order to put herself in a better position financially. She is also planning on taking online college courses when she’s not at work, so she can get better educated and open up more opportunities for herself.. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the money for a computer, so that’s where I hope you are able to help her! Just as important, she is working so hard to improve herself personally. She has completely cut drugs from her life, doesn’t party anymore, and rarely drinks any alcohol. Every day she simply goes to work, then comes home and takes care of Nora, that’s it. She has become completely dedicated to her daughter. And she has also had some success in getting Nora’s dad to make his own changes, and to be a consistent part of Nora’s life. Shelbie has truly had to fight tooth and nail to achieve this, and I admire her greatly for what she put herself through in order to get to this point with Nora’s father. It truly proves just how devoted Shelbie is to her daughter. In the end, Shelbie’s life is still very difficult. She still has many struggles financially and personally. Amazingly, even when times are tough, she still always puts Nora ahead of herself. When money or food is low, Nora eats first. Nora is clothed first. Nora is cared for first. Shelbie is certainly not a perfect mother (and who is?). But she works so hard every day to be as good a mom to Nora as she can be, and she does great! Unfortunately, she is virtually never recognized for it. And this is ultimately why I feel she should win this nomination. Not just because she’s deserves to be recognized, because many moms out there deserve recognition. But because Shelbie needs to be recognized. She needs to know that she is a good mother, an amazing mother, and an awesome person. Nora is what changed Shelbie for the better, and Nora is what keeps Shelbie going. Though she doesn’t talk about it much, I know Shelbie sometimes fears that she isn’t good enough for Nora or isn’t doing enough for her. This is obviously not the case. And for Shelbie to know this would mean so much to her! As I said before, Shelbie doesn’t have the money for a computer. She’s found financial aid to help cover the cost of the courses, but it won’t cover a computer, which is such a shame! So, if she were to get this laptop, it would make a huge impact for her as it would remove the biggest obstacle for her beginning online courses. Shelbie has inspired me, probably more than she realizes. Because of her, I appreciate my own parents, my own life, so much more. I see how lucky I am to have the life I have. And I have a great deal more respect for young moms, like herself, who struggle everyday and work so hard at life. I am so inspired by her and I hope her story inspires you too! If anyone could & would be helped by getting this laptop, it would be Shelbie. Thanks & sorry for the long post!

Since my mom passed a few months ago and I am trying to catch up on the bills and things left in her absence, replacing my old laptop is something gets postponed every month. Also, the kids (my lil brothers and sisters) always need something; so I feel guilty about spending the money on a new computer (her passing has really made me understand what a warrior she was. I already have a laptop, but if I won this laptop I would give it to my mother. She doesn't have a computer, needs one, but isn't in the best situation to purchase one. Recently I have tried to put a little money to the side here and there to surprise her with one. When she was working she was in business and now she feels out of touch with the world and not as tech savvy as everyone else. So, if I win this laptop, I would give it to my mother so that she can keep up to speed with the technology age, taking care of business and other matters online instead of having to mail things in and go directly to companies to pay bills.

As a recent college graduate, May 10th to be exact, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a new laptop! I have not had a laptop for two years. This means that my final two years of college were spent trucking it to the computer lab and spending all night in there completing assignments. Thankfully, I overcame this challenge and did what I had to do in order to graduate--with a BA in Advertising: Art Direction might I add. Now that I am venturing into the real world, I need a laptop in order to stay relevant in my industry. As an Art Director, ALL of my projects are completed using a computer. As you can see, not having one presents its own set of challenges.

I think I became a little too excited when I stopped into the blog and saw that I almost missed out on the chance to win a new laptop! For years my daughter has been telling me that I need to get rid of the dinosaur on my desk that I know as my laptop. To her it is old, outdated and slow. Unfortunately, she is right and I am way overdue for an upgrade. I would love a newer laptop that is more versatile. It will allow me to better manage my home based business. It will also give me more space for media so that I can keep up with all the pictures that my nieces and nephews are constantly sending me of their growing children. (Hopefully my emails will soon be full of pictures of grandchildren too). And now that my daughter has relocated to another state maybe I can finally download and learn how to use Skype and video chat with her. We tried on my current laptop but it moves entirely too slow. Hopefully if I win I can show her that I DO know how to keep up. Thanks for the opportunity and for the wonderful blog!

Dear Bella: I do not have a computer. Imine died on me and I have no job right now so I am afraid to invest in one right now because I may not find a job as soon as I like. I have to go to the library daily to conduct my job search. I would really appreciate the win!

I thought about saying “save the world”, but I don’t want to save it. I’m not Superman. I’m just a fuzzy-headed, 20-something in Atlanta. And saving the world is a short term, solitary endeavor for superheroes. I’m investing in this world for the long haul and I’m not doing it alone. And being just a regular sort of person, not a Man-of-Steel, I don’t really have a bunch of superpowers in my arsenal. So, instead I’ve got to acquire the best tools that I can. This summer my working group and I are doing a really cool project to give neighborhoods an opportunity for collective action and to promote the work of local activists doing anti-foreclosure and anti-eviction work in the metro-Atlanta area. A large bit of this project will be a social media campaign (youtube videos, tumblr, facebook) focusing on images of homes in the process of foreclosure and a guerilla advertising campaign. We’ve got the people power, but honestly, our tools are sorely lacking (because having a bunch of part-time jobs, doesn't quite equal a full-time job). We’re hoping the campaign will spread across the country, since this year the US is looking at over 12 million foreclosures. That Sony Vaio could make the difference between our campaign being just an Atlanta-thing or a nation-wide thing. Of course, I’d love a pink laptop just to have. I mean, it’s pink, that’s enough right? After the campaign I’d use it for my public health classes, to write books for teens, and to constantly check facebook. This summer though, it would make me faster than a locomotive.
