Dear Old Navy

by afrobella

I’m gonna need you to quit playing games with my heart.

on692518-00vliv01

As a plus size fashionista, I’ve respected your hustle for a while now. For years you’ve produced a steady and reliable line of plus size essentials. Tees, jeans, on-trend blouses. I’ve been there as a purchaser when you respected my demographic and sold plus size garments in your stores. And when you made women’s plus exclusively online I will admit, I felt shunned — but I continued to buy. Because I knew, if I was looking for an affordable, comfortable and chic tee, Old Navy would always be there for me with the right item at the right price.

So consider me outraged that you’d try to slide in an item like this super chic belted wool-blend cape — and have the audacity to charge $129 for it.

Those are Gap prices. Venturing into Banana Republic territory.

Old Navy, what are you doing? That prices doesn’t even look right as the cape shares screen space with its outerwear peers — which currently max out at $82.

Old Navy, for years I have loved you as the kind of store I could spend $100 and at least get an entire outfit from. Maybe more, if I really rummaged through the clearance aisle. I see you trying to elevate your style game with this admittedly trendy-yet-classic cape, but really. This is wool-blend. Not even 100% wool. And for an item that’s only sold online that I can’t try on or touch…ich don’t think so.

Consider this some friendly advice from a frequent and fond consumer — stay in your lane and consider your consumer. It’s entirely possible to step up your designs and still remain as affordable as ever. I’m sincerely hoping you find a way. Until then, I’ll be biding my time until this cape comes down to under $50 on clearance. My day will come, if I just wait a while.

Bestest,
Afrobella

PS: my curvy homegirl Marie Denee feels the same way.

    Fret not Afrobella,
I’m sure that it will be on clearance sometime in January.

Did you at least send them an e-mail regarding this item?

I’m sitting, watching and waiting, nexgrl!

But it never occurred to me to send them an e mail. Do you know where I could direct such a question? Let a bella know!

“This is wool-blend. Not even 100% wool. And for an item that’s only sold online that I can’t try on or touch…ich don’t think so. ”

That’s what gets me the most about it. $129 is totally a respectable price for a winter coat. But for a wool-blend????

hilarious! and so well put. get ’em bella. afro plus women recessionistas unite!

    Goodness.

As a plus sized woman and frequent shopper at Old Navy this BUGS me. As it is they already charge more for their plus sized t-shirts than they do their straight sized ones. I mean do you see any of the $5/10/15 goodies for plus sized women that you do for straight sized women? RARELY if ever.

I have yet to see a garment from Old Navy that had the quality to back up such a large price tag.

Not to mention the fact that Old Navy NO LONGER gives free return/exchanges on plus sized merchandise.

    Lame all around, Old Navy.

I think that price MIGHT be an error. I’ve seen stuff like that before on the Old Navy site. Plus that coat has been out for a while and I don’t think it was that price before (though I might be wrong). Has anyone contacted ON to ask?

So glad you posted this! Even though I am a smaller bella, I have noticed Old Navy’s prices creeping up for a while now. They were my one-stop shop for cute trendy accessories and my summer tank tops. I have no idea why they think that their present quality is worth $129 for a coat! They need to learn their place and realize that people are only buying of the moment pieces from them-not staples that can/will be worn in 5 years time. **SMH**

As a former plus-size fashionista, ON and I are no longer friends.
First they stop carrying plus size in the store, then they charge more for the same crap, now they want $120 for a blend coat?
This sounds like another case of, oh they don’t have many options so surely they’ll pay it to look fly. I think not!

You are funny… but so right!!Bella you are a writer…send them an e-mail or better yet the link to this post.

    Wool peacoat, $121 @ Torrid.

OK! As advised, I sent Old Navy’s customer service an e mail including a link to this post. Let’s see what (if anything) happens…

Anji — off to check Torrid. I think I found something on Ebay I’d rather buy…

I had to laugh at the “stay in your lane” remark. I thought I was the only one who noticed the creepingly higher prices at ON. It’s not just on the plus clothing either. I couldn’t believe they were trying to sell those coats that wouldn’t stand up to real cold weather for those prices. I used to love ON,now not so much.

Well well! I woke up this morning to a reply e mail from Old Navy customer service! My friendly letter (and your comments!) are being passed along. I’ll keep you posted whether or not I get a further response!

lol you ladies crack me up. I too shop at Old Navy frequently, and I have noticed a slight increase in price, but I hit the clearance racks first. I really like this cape but not for that price. hmmm Maybe $60 or so. I’m surprised they responded.

lol…I purchased a coat from Old Navy last year when they first came out. Lucky for me when I returned it for a larger size, it was half price. I also tend to hit the sale section only with ON.

I was JUST looking at that coat when I was shopping the ON site on Sunday. I wanted to take advantage of the F&F discount.

I personally hate that plus-size is online only and “mail only” returns. Why can’t I just go to the store like everyone else? I get that they don’t sell plus-size in store but why should that be my burden?

I had a friend that worked for GAP and they used to carry jeans up to a size 20 in store. When they stopped I told him it was GAP’s way of weeding the fat people out of the store. He laughed, of course, but I was serious. They kept the size 20s in their outlet, where plus-size must be acceptable, and pulled it from the shelves. Bad move!!

I still ended up ordering from ON but when I saw the price of that coat I thought they done lost their mind!

You can find Plus size at ON. I don’t know if that is only in NC.

I am not now, never have been and will probably NEVER be a fan of old navy! The fact that they do not want plus size people in the store (evidenced by not carrying anything that we fit) and the ridiculous prices for the stuff they have on line makes me sure that they do not have to EVER worry about getting any of my plus sized dollars!

  19. ichoosethesun

    @ bella and others

The price is now listed as $99.00, word of caution: peep the reviews – it appears the jacket DOES NOT have sleeves (if that matters to you) as it may appear in the picture….happy shopping 🙂

  20. nookey

The capes is listed as $64.50, its getting closer to your under 50 bid..lol as of 11/26/09

Nookie and Ichoosethesun – thanks for sharing those reviews! Upon further thought — I am good. This cape sounds like it photographs better than it actually looks on, in person!

Well our coat of a questionable blend is down to $80. Maybe a decent price for the coat is just around the corner.

  23. Vicki D

    at

Well, I just received my ON wool-blend cape for $39.99 plus free shipping and I was shocked to find that it does not, in fact, have sleeves! It looks like a big, gray corduroy poncho. Now, I don’t have any problem with poncho sweaters, but in a wool-blend coat?!? I don’t think I could waer it while driving the car because I can’t lift my arms. I am so disappointed.
