Want Of The Week: Monif C’s Marilyn Dress

by afrobella

Lemme tell you a crazy story. Do you believe in destiny? This feels more like dresstiny.

Last year I was still living in Miami. We were planning a move to Chicago, and I had just quit my job. I was nervous about our future, but I had a dream that reassured me.

It was in the heat of July, and I was striding across Millennium Park in downtown Chicago, past The Bean. I was wearing the most stunning bright-burnt orange maxi summer dress. I wanna say it was a cotton blend, tiered at the bottom, and perhaps had some crochet detailing near the neckline and/or sleeves.

Look — I blogged about this dream on March 2, 2009!

But then I more or less forgot about it, focused on moving to Chicago, and stopped trying to find my dream dress.

I honestly hadn’t even remembered the dream until I picked up the May edition of Essence with Jill Scott on the cover. Flipping through the pages, there it was. MY DRESS! My dream dress! On Jill Scott!!! OMG!

Turns out that it’s by the one and only Monif C. Her Marilyn Long Convertible Dress, to be specific, and it’s $235.

It will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine.

Monif C is all about the showstopping dresses, and any plus size bella trying to get right for the summer should check out her swimwear. I’m dying to get the St. Tropez fringed swimsuit. You could even rock that as a top with a little black skirt! Ow!

Monif C. is currently going from city to city hosting shopping events. She’s normally based in NYC, but recently she was in DC and on Saturday she’ll be in Philly. I am seriously hoping Chicago is next, so I can make my striding-through-the-park-in-July dream actually come true!

Click here to follow Monif C Plus Sizes on Facebook, and click here to visit her online store. But don’t buy out the long tangerine dress, leave one for me!

I love Monif C. I own two of the Marilyn Convertible dresses. One is the short version in Chocolate Brown & the long version is a beautiful Purple. I purchased both of my dresses during her end of the season sale, so I did not pay full price. After I saw Jill Scott in Essence I knew that would be the way I would wear my beautiful Purple one. I know you will love your dress whenver you purchase it… Monif C clothing is fabulous!!

Okay, I really wasn’t expecting to see Wayne in that clip, lol…

Gorgeous though…I’d get it if it was about a quarter of that price. Make sure you take a picture of yourself in it!

Gorgeous dress! Anyone know if there’s anything like it available in regular sizes?

Ok I was just perusing the site and saw that this dress fits smaller sizes as well. “one size fits all from size 8 – 24”
    That works for me!

Wow! What an absolutely gorgeous dress! And it’s in my favorite color! As I was reading your entry I remembered reading about your dream some time back. Yes… destiny has shown up…that is your dress. Got for it!

I just bought a pink Monif C. short convertible dress. And when I went to the boutique, the guy wrapped it on me like 6 different ways – he even showed me how to make it a SHIRT! It’s totally worth the money.

It’s a nice dress, but it doesn’t fit your description.

    It’s not:
    bright-burnt orange
(at least in the first photo — is that the same dress as the second, I see it’s “convertible”)

    It’s not:
    a cotton blend
    (it’s jersey)

    It’s not:
    tiered at the bottom

    And it has no:
crochet detailing near the neckline and/or sleeves.

So I guess your dreams are open to a lot of interpretation.

But as I said, it’s a nice dress.

I am SOOOO getting this in the short and long!!! Absolutely love the concept of making the dress in any style I want as opposed to sticking to how it’s made!!! Thanks for showing this… I’ve been looking for a decent long dress since last summer, but Betsy and her friend (my boobs) always misbehave in what is made available, by making themselves known to the world in a way that I don’t like. Can’t wait to pick these up!

Check out the dresses on Igigi.com. They have some gorgeous plus sized dresses. They have a short dress that is similar to the one that Jill Scott is pictured wearing. It is for sale for $91.50. It’s called Amanda Wrap Dress.

#9 reader – please note in my dream I started by saying “I wanna say” and in that sentence I even add, “perhaps.”

So yes, my dreams – as many dreams – are open to interpretation. Thanks for always reading so closely.

Everyone else, thanks for the feedback! I’m saving my pennies!

#11 Lisa – off to check Igigi right now!

I love this dress. I think it the cost is a bit steep. I’m thinking of purchasing enough wool jersey to have someone make a replica of the dress for me.

That dress will not fail you! My mom was a sweetheart and bought it for me in short and white(White party for memorial day, White night at our family reunion in July). I’ve never gotten more compliments in it. Don’t be afraid to buy it over the internet. It came to me priority mail, in perfect condition. I must say, don’t buy it in white lol…Definitely the orange or the yellow. I don’t know how tall you are, but the short one was a touch too long to wear as a skirt around my waist. I feel like the long one will be way too long for you to wear with flats, but I could be wrong.

My sister was in a wedding and all the bridesmaids wore convertible jersey dresses that cost about the same price as the Monif C. Marilyn dress about $250. Here is what we discovered, the dress consists of a skirt which is one long wide piece with one seam. the top consists of two wide long sashes for the wrapping. All together only 3 seams to make this dress. If you can’t sew have a friend help you. Go to a fabric store and have them serge those 3 seams for you. My sister went to a discount fabric store and for $60 got enough high quality jersey fabric for 2 plus size dresses that would fit size 18-24. Most of these convertible style dresses don’t even have finished hems but raw edges.I love Monif C but like all the rest of these convertible style dresses it is way over priced. With a little effort a dream dress could become an affordable reality.

I have the long version of this dress in the stunning yellow color. I am only 5 feet tall and when I am done wrapping the dress around my body it is miraculously the perfect length. For flats even. I feel regal in it and you will too. FYI that tangerine color is sold out so I hope you got it in time.
