You Deserve: The Karim Rashid eee PC

by afrobella

For years I was posting these here blog posts from what can only be described as a janky laptop. And by janky I mean of inferior quality, broken down, undesirable. It was old and slow and crusty looking, unpredictable and unworthy of the kind of greatness I yearn to achieve.

So when I was offered the opportunity to participate in a PC loaner program and review the Karim Rashid ASUS Eee PC Netbook for a year, I JUMPED at the chance.

I had already daydreamed of getting a netbook – what with my busy travel schedule, a smaller computer was starting to become a real necessity. And what with my desire to be as fashionable as possible at all times – this sleek, seashell-inspired designer computer seemed to be a perfect fit!

It’s been a few months and I’ve been thoroughly road testing this machine. Now I can REALLY tell you what I dig about it, and why – if you’re considering getting a new computer – the Karim Rashid ASUS Eee PC Netbook could be for you.

#1 – The size. If you travel, size matters. I’ve gotten to the point where I really try to pack light, because air travel makes me feel like Gulliver in the land of Lilliput. When I’m strapped in my seat and passengers are seated at either side of me, there’s barely any room for us all to breathe. So having a small, light machine that can easily fit on a tray table is a HUGE plus. With the eee PC I don’t need to pack a big laptop bag. My regular oversized purse will do just fine! On my last flight from California to Chicago, I was able to put in some serious work while on the plane. So amazing.

#2 – The look. Karim Rashid’s seashell design comes in two colors – an uber bright pink, and a subtle coffee brown. I’ve got the coffee brown, and its so cool! It’s sleek, stylish without being over-styled, if you know what I mean. It’s the kind of machine you’d feel proud to slip out of your purse if you wind up sitting backstage at a show during New York Fashion Week, for example. Slicker than your average.

#3 – The technology. The Asus eee PC runs Windows 7, which I am loving more and more as I use it. Full disclosure: I’ve always been a PC girl, so all of the programs I’m used to using as here, just better with cooler tabs and features to make getting work done even easier. And I don’t know if you’ve been watching TV lately but this whole Cloud thing is pretty awesome. I look forward to figuring out how it works and sharing my eventual review with you!

It retails for less than $500, so compared to other “designer” netbooks and laptops, it’s a pretty good deal all around. By no means am I a computer expert, but I do use one practically every moment of every day. And the eee PC has been making me a very happy blogger!

I’ll be road testing the eee PC for a full year, so expect more occasional updates about how it’s working for me.

Do you have a netbook, or a laptop? What’s your machine of choice these days?

Looking Good Bella. I’m a Mac girl all the way but that netbook looks good, especially for a fly girl on the go.

For the last couple of years I’ve used an Acer AspireOne after learning about them at an American Bar Association panel I moderated about free and cheap tech advice for small firm and solo practicioners. You can purchase them all over now (Micro Center, Best Buy, etc.) but my hubby bought mine at BJ’s a couple of Christmases ago as a gift (~$300). I get lots of positive comments when I use it out in public. What I love most is that it fits in all of my purses so it travels light. My only qualms are the memory (I save alot of documents, photos, and music to the space is getting tight) and the speakers (kinda small, but usually I use headphones so it’s not too bad). I’ve used Dells, and IBMs/Lenovos throughout college and law school, but I am considering switching to a Mac later this year…

I love my MacBook Pro. It’s simply the best computer I’ve ever used (on so many different levels.) The design elements (with all manner of bells and whistles) and the fact that Apple writes its own software contribute to its FABULOSITY. Couldn’t understand all the hoopla until I bought one myself.

I got a Dell mini last March and was generally happy with it except for the fact that some websites were not properly fformatted for the small screen. Fast forward to Christmas Eve when i got my new iPad from hubby and the truth is, i will probably never touch the mini again. Yes, there are times when I miss the full keyboard but if I really feel like I need one in 6 months, I will definitely be considering a macbook. I think I have officially become a mac person – and it all started wi the iPhone.

Rarely do I post, but your blog has always been informative and enjoyable to read:) My Dell laptop is about 4 yrs old. It’s been acting out again and hubby is trying to fix it since he is after all a techie. I’m thinking of abandoning my laptop altogether and upgrade. I like your review….I will keep this one in mind while I’m shopping.

Btw, staying natural for the past 6 yrs. was the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m loving it! Just started my sisterlocks a couple months ago.

I’m definitely a mac kinda gal, but can’t really get with the iPad. This on the other hand is really enticing. Maybe it’s the divalicious cover 🙂

I used to have an Acer aspire laptop 15″ monitor – loved it but it grinded to a halt. I now use either my family PC which is by Dell or my macbook pro. I am still fairly new to mac and must say I love it.

    that.
