How Late Am I to the Sam Sparro Party?

by afrobella

Was I under a rock of some kind? Since 2007? Courtesy of Best Week Ever, I just discovered the music of Sam Sparro this weekend, and fell head over heels for this Australian boy.

Anyone who can cover Estelle that well gets a thumbs up from me.

I like but don’t love 21st Century Life, but right now this minute, Black and Gold is on repeat in my casa while I get my Sunday housecleaning on.

From what I’m reading, this was an inescapable hit in Europe. But it’s new to me and I’m loving Sam Sparro’s style. The acoustic version is awesome.

I love the imported pop music, I do.

Click here for Sam Sparro’s album, and click here for Estelle’s Shine, if you don’t already have it. Her record label just made the incredibly boneheaded decision to pull her album off iTunes, so she needs some love on the album sales tip. Way to shoot a promising artist in the foot.

What are your thoughts on Sam Sparro? I’m looking for new music, so tell me what you’re chilling to on this Sunday afternoon?

WOW, he is really dope. I like his style a lot. I am assuming he is gay, since he didn’t change the “american boy” to “american girl”, lol.

On a side note. Paul McCartney does a pretty good-albeit cheesy, cover of T-Pains “Buy You a Drink”

LOVE HIM! wow, I can’t believe I haven’t heard of him till now.

I am currently listening to Solange’s new album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams, which is surprisingly good! My favorite is 6 O’Clock Blues, which has a very Supremes feel to it. She’s definitely beginning to step out of Beyonce’s shadow.

Hey La! Yup, Sam Sparro is out, proud, and wonderful. Love him! PS — that was Jesse McCartney… but not a bad version nonetheless!

I like him, but Bella have you heard that unreleased song by Lauryn Hill “World Is A Hustle”? I just turn my radio up ,and sing my heart out on Sunday.

I’ve been listening to Leona Lewis lately. I know people think she’s a Mariah rip-off, but I love her. She’s got a killer voice.

Sam Sparro reminds me of some the good music that came out of Britain in the 80’s. His videos have a retro feel to them.

Anybody like British singer Adele? I think she’s been slept on in the States. I love the songs Chasing Pavements and Melt My Heart To Stone!

LOL at La…I love me some Paul McCartney so I about had a heart attack when I first read your post. Glad it wasn’t really Paul, LOL! 🙂

Yup, finally bought the Estelle album and it ADDICTIVE. Pulled from iTunes? OK that’s dumb. I wish her all the best.

I’ll be honest, I like his original song better than the cover. You’re not alone, Bella; I’ve never heard of him either. Thanks for the heads’ up.

I love ‘American Boy’ it is just one of those songs that you can groove to no matter how many times its played. I never get tired of hearing it.
I’m loving Sam Sparro’s style as well.

Yes, Ma’am! I was turned on to him by my boy DJ YZO over at Industry Soul. Mentioned him in one of my posts and somehow wound up with his album in my hands shortly afterwards 😉 LOVE IT.

Still have yet to get my hands on Estelle’s actual album. LOVED her performance when she opened up for Jilly from Philly at the last concert. Videos on my You Tube channel. My fave from her is Substitute Lover which has a lovely reggae flava to it. She performed it at the concert!

I love Adele too. Great voice.

Why did Estelle’s label pull her music off iTunes?

Sam Sparro is ok. I don’t know something about the music just doesn’t sound fresh although I did like hearing black and gold over the summer. I’m waiting for Jasmine Sullivan’s album. I’m loving the beats and although she sounds a little like Lauryn Hill she’s different enough for me to take note.

I like Sam Sparro. Adele is great also and you have to see her live. She has quite the sense of humor. I recommend browsing through music blogs from writers in various countries. It’s a great resource for finding new music or BBC Radio One. It’s a big world out there with a lot of artists who make interesting music even if it’s all somewhat derivative. Thanks for the great posts!!

my fav imports are from the UK!
i have a thing for any music out of the UK. its just soo fresh.
alternative sounds better out there, so does soul and r&b.
im literally sick of american music. and i notice that slowly more american artists are picking up their style.
i have Brand New Heavies, Oasis, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse and MIA on constant rotation on my ipod.
OH and im a HUGE dance music fan and i swear the best dance/techno comes from europe. madonna’s confession on the dancefloor was produced by british producers and its her best album IMO.
I like Estelle, but I’d prefer if she’d stick to her British sound and not get too involved with Kanye. But I guess ppl need to cross over to the pond to get the airplay..

    Hi,

I also have Sam Sparro on replay. Estelle too. My latest imported pop addictions are Kardinal Offishall from Toronto has a great album too, I love “Due Me A Favour” ft Estelle too, “Love Shy” by Platnum, “Chasing Pavements” by Adele. I love just about anything by Faithless too … “God is A DJ” especially.

    Ooh I am so excited!
