Class Action Cosmetics!

by afrobella

Yet another tip of the hat to the Frugalista — today’s tip made me shriek in excitement.

If you visited a high end department store and overpaid for some cosmetics between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003, you could be in for a freebie, thanks to a class action lawsuit.

From Businessweek:

“Starting next week, several big retailers will giveaway $175 million worth of free high-end cosmetics including such brands as Estee Lauder and L’Oreal to consumers as part of a class-action settlement alleging that the stores planned to fix prices.

Department stores such as Macy’s and Nordstrom will distribute free cosmetics as long as supplies last to shoppers who bought certain cosmetics between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003 to settle claims that the stores violated antitrust laws and tried to fix prices.”

So you’re wondering — when, where, what?

“The products will be available starting Jan. 20. Shoppers are only permitted to receive one product made by cosmetic companies that include Chanel, Estee Lauder and L’Oreal USA, among others.

Stores participating in the settlement include: Bergdorf Goodman, Bergner’s, Bloomingdale’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Dillard’s, Gottschalks, Herberger’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Parisian, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Younkers.”

Companies are giving back specific products, so visit Cosmetics Settlement to learn more. Myself, I’ll be making a beeline to the Dior counter for a bottle of J’Adore. Or to Givenchy, for a bottle of Very Irresistible (it really is). Or to Lancome, for a tube of Fatale mascara.

Well hello, 2009!

Happy Friday, bellas!

Be sure to get to your store of choice early, this is only while supplies last.

Do you have to somehow prove that you’re a class member? I know that I bought cosmetics during that time period, but there’s no way I have any receipts or anything years later.

I could’ve sworn that it’s Lancome that makes the fatale mascara not L’oreal???

Avartsy – mistake corrected. Although it’s rumored that Lancome = L’Oreal products in fancier packaging, you are correct. Fatale is Lancome. Good looking out!

Moni – read the details at the website, they have all the info you need.

This isn’t really relevant to me since I’m not in the US, but I’m just wondering, who keeps receipts from all that long ago? They do specify that you needed to have purchased a product, and the only way they can really prove that is with a receipt. Enjoy your windfall ladies. I’m envious!

    1) The give away will not be a free for all. There will be booths set up at the front of the stores with only certain products available from each brand with a certain amount. You won’t be able to go the the individual counters to pick and choose your faves. You don’t need proof of purchase but will have to sign some sort of affidavit to state that you purchased product during that time frame.

    2) Lancome is owned by L’Oreal which also owns about twenty other brands including Maybelline, and Garnier.

    Hey, Ladies

Went to the Mall today. Went to two stores and got in and out off long line, in less than 30 minutes. The process is as easy as print, sign your name and get the product you desire. Yeah!!! I got Vera Wang Shower gel and Lancome mascara…. I’m sooo excited.
