Apparently I Look Like the Eggo Waffles Girl

There’s a commercial on TV quite a bit lately, and EVERY TIME it airs, I get tweets and texts and Facebook messages about it. Have you seen the latest Eggo Waffles commercial? Apparently lots of people think the little girl in it looks like me. Or could be my child. Either way, LOL! I see it!

I might be biased but I think the ad is super cute. And I love to see the increasing representation of diversity in advertising and media.

Back in 2006 when I started this blog, I remember lamenting the lack of people of color in ads. It felt like a big deal to see a woman with natural hair in an ad back then. And we have come a LONG way, baby.

Of course there’s always further to go, but there are times when I flip channels on TV and can’t help but appreciate the changes that I DO notice.

I’d love to meet this little girl, just so we can take a photo together!

Do you have a commercial lookalike? Tell me your thoughts in the comments!

She not only looks like a mini you But that last comment is so you when you were that age with all the brothers looking to huff our eats.

Yes it is good to see more diversity but sometimes it still seems to be “brown” rather than black..what do you think?

I completely agree – there are way more “brown” characters with loose curls, so the problem remains.

It definitely tends to be more brown but I want to believe we’re making some kind of progress. Things HAVE gotten somewhat better, no?

Very true, Afrobella. A couple years ago, we wouldn’t have even seen this commercial.

I so thought the same thing. I almost tweeted you about it myself. Each time I see this commercial I think that could be your little girl.

I see it! LOL. At least she’s real – people tell me I look like Jazmine Dubois…from the Boondocks!

And I agree with what pets says: there is still a lack of diversity in the black people you see on TV – whether it be a commercial, or a series (same goes for film). You still see a lot of biracial black folks or regular light skinned black folks, LOL. We come in a variety of hues and we’re all beautiful…I wish we’d see more of a range.

I want to believe things are getting better, but sometimes it feels like we’re just sticking to a different stereotype…

Things are getting better but, like you said, we’ve got a long way to go.

Both you and Rachel Crow reminds me so much of the little girl in the Cheerios commercial.

I just had to read this when I saw the title! I hadn’t seen the commercial before. It’s super cute! And I agree with you that we are seeing much more diversity in today’s commercials. What a great thing 🙂
