“When’s the last time you had an eye exam?” My husband asked me this question as I rested my chin on the pre-testing equipment during our appointment at MyEyeDr. I had to stop and think about it – probably not since my teen years! This month my husband and I visited the MyEyeDr. Old Town office (one of 47 offices within the Chicagoland, southern Wisconsin and northern Indiana area) for our annual wellness exams to test our vision and the health of our eyes. He has always had eyesight issues, so he’s super used to getting a vision test. I was brand new to the experience, and it was literally eye-opening!

MyEyeDr. offers comprehensive eye care services and a wide selection of eyewear, from budget or value to designer and luxury prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses, as well as standard or specialty prescription contact lenses. You can come in to shop and try on cool sunnies, but scheduling an appointment and seeing a licensed and professional optometrist is the way to go! This year is almost over, and so are my insurance benefits — so it was THE perfect time for me to get in and maximize those benefits. And same goes for you — the year’s almost over, so book your appointment and use your insurance benefits before they expire! MyEyeDr. accepts FSA and HSA dollars for all prescription eyewear purchases (including prescription sunglasses, progressives and contacts) and eye exams.

My eye exam journey began with a pre-examination and a blood pressure reading. Did you know your blood pressure can affect your eyes? High blood pressure can cause vision problems, so it’s important to keep an eye on that (literally).

The next test was called the auto-refractor — you look into this machine and see a hot air balloon going in and out of focus.

Then we did this thing.

I thought I could feel it ever so lightly, touch my eye. So of course I had to ask, “Did that just touch my eye? I think it did.” Lo and behold, YES.

And last but not least, this test helped to assess the retina, optic disc and the cornea. Light shines into your peripheral vision while the technician does his assessment.

After the pre-test, you see the optometrist. I saw Dr. Christopher Suor, who was awesome and made me feel instantly at ease. We did the traditional visual acuity test with the eye chart.

According to Dr. Suor, I have pretty good vision, but I clearly spend too much time looking at computer screens. He recommends a 20-20-20 approach — every 20 minutes, look 20 feet in the distance for 20 seconds — to rest my eyes and take a break from the screen.

Apparently, screens are really affecting our vision. 42% of the population has myopia, and we’re climbing towards 50%. According to Dr. Suor, 30 years ago that number was more like 25%. What’s changed? The ubiquity of screens and smartphones. The American Optometric Association recommends that you have a comprehensive eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye doctor.

My vision is excellent now, but every single relative of mine wears reading glasses. Dr. Suor predicts somewhere down the road, I’ll be needing a pair of my own.

LOL at my face after Dr. Suor told me I’ll need reading glasses in my future! Ah well. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

My eyesight is good enough that I don’t yet need glasses. Now came the fun part. MyEyeDr. carries all kinds of cool styles for eyeglasses, and they also have sunglasses! And they’ve got trained eyewear consultants to really help you choose the perfect pair of frames for your face. Lou helped me find my perfect pair and she was so patient and helpful in the process. I tried on a bunch to see if I could find something I really LOVED.

I kept coming back to these classic round black Ray Bans. Super cute as everyday sunglasses. They just felt light and fit right.

The square framed black Ray Bans were cute, but just not quite right on me.

I always like these kind of frames on other people, but not so much on myself.

I love a unique shape of frame, but because I have a round face they don’t always work for me.

These were super cute, love the frame!

These were just NOT me. I have some friends they would be perfect for, but not my style.

OK now we were getting somewhere! These are by Oliver Peoples and they just felt so solid and substantial. Gorgeous clear frames that felt right on my face.

I tried on quite a few pairs, but still hadn’t found THE perfect pair of sunglasses.

Then I got over to the case of Salvatore Ferragamo glasses and I knew I was where I was supposed to be. How chic are these??

I loved the shape and the embellishments. But then I found THE pair.

Oh hi.

Clearly feeling myself here.

Hello, new sunnies! LOVED these.

After my visit at MyEyeDr., I felt so much more confident in my vision and my style. I LOVE these new sunglasses! And now I know some valuable techniques for taking better care of my vision.

Now through December 31, frames are buy one get one 50% off on select brands. So you can go get your eyes tested, and get some awesome new frames for yourself!
