Concealer That Matches YOU –The Best Brands For Dark Skin

by afrobella

We’ve got a long way to go in terms of full diversity in fashion and beauty, but I sincerely feel that there’s been real, necessary change in the beauty product development world. Most smart major American brands have gotten the memo that multicultural beauty (and multicultural hair) isn’t a trend, and it isn’t going away – it’s here to stay, so get on board. There are far fewer brands that stick to having the bare minimum 4 or 6 shades in skin tone coverage anymore. So recently when one of my besties asked for concealer brand recommendations for dark skin, I was TOO happy to put her up on game.

“What’s a good concealer you can recommend? I’m also not trying to spend $30 on it. I want the stick form b/c it’s easy to throw in my pencil case.”

I’m glad you asked! You inspired this here blog post. Because I know there are MANY who are seeking a concealer to match our skin tone, just assuming that there isn’t a whole lot out there for us.

best concealers for dark skin

I love a richly pigmented, creamy concealer stick, or liquid concealer in a tube. Allow me to make some suggestions and introduce you to a wide range of concealer choices, from drugstore to department store. Some will be sticks. Some will be liquid in a tube. Some might come in a little pot. All come in shades that should match my bellas with deep skin tones.

Drugstore recommendations

Black Opal  –  Black Opal’s concealers come in different formats. True Color Flawless Perfecting Concealer comes in a little lipstick-like tube that’s easy to travel with. I’m also a big fan of their Total Coverage Spot & Scar Eraser; the formulation is thick and blends effortlessly with fingers or a brush.

Iman Corrective Concealer – The whole objective of Iman’s cosmetics line is to produce shades for overlooked skin tones and her concealer delivers. Also there’s her CC Crème powder to crème concealer, which requires a unique application method but works to cover blemishes and under eye circles.

CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Liquid – this is more of the traditional concealer you may be used to – slender tube, lipgloss applicator. Comes in 4 shades specifically intended for deeper skin tones.

LA Girl – I keep hearing amazing things about these $5 or less concealers by LA Girl. They offer 18 shades and Style & Beauty Doc did a great job on swatching the relevant ones (click here to see).

SheaMoisture – SheaMoisture holds the corner on natural hair and body care, and they’re making huge strides in the makeup game too. They currently offer 4 shades of foundation at Target, but according to reviews their offerings lean towards deeper hues.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer – If you’re looking for a light, breathable kind of coverage, Maybelline’s Fit Me comes in 6 shades, from Fair to Café.

MAC Matchmaster

Department store recommendations

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer is a favorite of many for a reason – it’s creamy, highly pigmented, and rocks (despite being in a pot, not a stick).

MAC Matchmaster concealer sticks set the standard for concealer perfection, IMO. 12 shades, super creamy, comes in a lipstick tube and blends like a dream.

Make Up For Ever full cover concealer – I know many makeup artists swears by Make Up For Ever’s concealer, it’s high quality, gives great coverage and lasts.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer – I’m a huge fan of NARS…well, EVERYTHING, really. But their foundations and concealers truly match, blend, last and never lead to breakouts on my skin. Their radiant, creamy concealer is appropriately named and is totally worth the investment.

Lancome Macquicomplete concealer – How do they cover up Lupita’s under eye circles and imperfections (despite the fact that she is flawless)? With Macquicomplete – Lancome’s creamy liquid concealer that comes in 13 shades.

Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealing Crème – Folks sleep on Becca, but it’s SUCH a great makeup brand for bellas all shades of beautiful. Their concealing crème comes in 13 shades and is a makeup artist favorite for good reason.

Cover FX Cream Concealer – If you’ve got a neutral undertone to your skin and haven’t found the brand for you, I assume you haven’t yet tried Cover FX.  They’re all about catering to a range of skin tones, and their foundation comes in 12 shades intended to perfectly mask your blemishes.

Prescriptives offers skin matching makeup services and makes amazing, quality products. Don’t forget about Prescriptives, their brand is all about performance and their whole concept of customized makeup shades helped to revolutionize the industry.

Diorskin Nude Skin Perfecting Hydrating Concealer – honestly, Dior is a brand I admire but don’t consider as often as I should. Makeup artist Ricky Wilson works with them and continually proves that they DO make incredibly high quality makeup for deep skin tones, and their Nude Skin products are so weightless and blendable. Plus, this concealer is $33 – not too far from the originally requested price.

Finding makeup that you know matches you FOR SURE can be tough if you’re looking online or in a store where you can’t touch or try the product. So if you’re still having a tough time finding makeup that matches you and you’re able to do so, go to a professional makeup artist at a department store – that’s what they’re there for and they’re dying to help you! OR, go to Sephora for their color matching system, Color IQ.

Did I miss your favorite concealer? Tell me about it in the comments!

For all of the ladies with acne-prone skin try mineral – based makeup to reduce the risk of clogging pores and causing whiteheads and blackheads!

Good list. I’ll check it out.
Black Opal’s Even True concealers are the TRUTH. I use the one w/the roller ball to “aid with puffiness.”

I love this post because I feel like I’m always looking for just makeup products in general that work for brown skin. I have been wanting to try a different concealer because I have pretty much just used the LA Girl ones! This gives me some great starting ground looking for a new one!

The best concealer is lightly wetting loose mineral powder to make it a creamy consistency and then apply. If you purchase loose mineral powder to use all over dry after you wet to conceal this is also a money saver/2 for 1 product. Many shades for brown skin are available at http://www.luvmineralcosmetics.com.

What concealer do you recommend for someone with oily under-eye & eyelids that have hyperpigmentation? Most of the concealers I’ve tried slide of in about 4 hours and others barely conceal…I also use primer and setting powder. Concealers I’ve tried are Becca, Lancome, Make Up For Ever & Anastasia Beverly Hills…none of them work
