7 Bold, Bright Lip Glosses to Stunt With This Summer

by afrobella

Hot weather makeup should do a few things. It should last in the heat, and not melt off your face the second you step outside. It should be light and easy to apply and non-transferable (or as non-transferable as possible. Nobody wants to leave a face print behind). And when it comes to lips, your summer makeup should make a statement. This is the time for super bright colors, worn without regret. This is the season of carefree, bold beauty.

I’ve got an insane lip product collection (if I do say so myself), but lately there are some lip glosses that have been turning my head big time. Allow me to share some of my latest favorite discoveries that you need in your life. Here are 7 of the hottest brands, and my picks for hottest colors of the summer – in no particular order, they all win!

Lip Glosses To Stunt With

Black Opal Color Splurge Patent Lips – Black Opal’s been delivering the pigment with their Color Splurge collection of lipsticks and lip glosses. I love the finish of these Patent Lips colors – they’re so bold and bright, and the patent finish really pops! Try it in my favorite color, Impassioned Pink.

NARS Larger Than Life Lip Gloss – Most makeup lovers know NARS lip gloss is poppin’ – the standard NARS lip gloss comes in 30 fabulous shades. Larger Than Life glosses come in 18 shades, but those shades are super glossy and highly pigmented. Penny Arcade and Rouge Tribal are my favorites (however Rouge Tribal is a metallic burgundy that is more of a fall color).

Ellis Faas Hot Lips – The packaging of these glosses is impressive and distinctive – they look like slender, silver bullets (in fact, during The Makeup Show, the representative wore the glosses in a kind of bullet belt reminiscent of Rambo). The packaging is different and so is the application – it’s the kind of gloss you have to click-click-click until a dot of product appears on the tip. But when you get to the gloss, your mind will be blown away at the shine and the pigment. We’re talking BRIGHT, long lasting color. Bright Red, Bright Orange, Bright Fuchsia. All perfect for the season.

Milani Lip Intense – I am HERE for Milani at all times. From their blushes to their eyeliners and especially their lip products, Milani stays knocking it out of the park. The new Lip Intense glosses are exactly what you’d hope for, and this purple lover is obsessed with Violet Addict.

Black|Up Lip Lacquers –  Lipstick + lip gloss = these high intensity new lippies from French brand Black|Up. If you’re not afraid of unusual bold colors, this is the brand for you. Their lippies come in shades from baby pink and safe peach, all the way to super bold red, orange, purple and BLUE.

Iman Cosmetics Lip Affair palette – I may be cheating on my own list here – technically these are lipsticks! But the slender packaging and portability makes this the kind of lip palette you’ll want to take everywhere with you, like a gloss. These 5 bold colors might be all you need to survive this summer, AND the kit costs like $5! This palette is a hot commodity and can be hard to find, so get it online at Target.com.

Magnolia Makeup – New Orleans’ own Magnolia Makeup is everything that Afrobella adores – a woman owned, black owned business intent on making amazing products for women all shades of beautiful! Their Velour Galore lip glosses aren’t for the faint of heart, honey. Truly unusual colors are available, and I’m super psyched to try shades like Tangeloupe – such a summery shade!

Listen, if you’ve got an ideal summer shade PLEASE tell me about it in the comments! This is my summer of lip color and I’m always looking for something new and hot to try – or an old fave to rediscover!

What are your summer lip favorites?

So love your love affair with color. You’re the one who inspired me & sent me over the edge to Sephora to purchase the Urban Decay Electric palette. TOTALLY here for #brownbeauties in rainbow colors. Currently, I’m digging the new Fergie Lip-stain Collection from WnW. Listen, they get great reviews as stand alone lip-stains, especially the bold & bright colors. But layered on top of your favorite lippie, these bad boys give extra life. They extend the wear time of my lipstick, give mega shine & moisture, & enhance the pigments. Score! Fave pairings so far are MAC Rebel layered (lightly) with Throwing Shade & NYX Shocking Pink (dupe for MAC Candy YumYum) layered with Ball in Vienna. A few dabs is all that’s required on top. I find that even through drinks & meals, these lip combos give me extra mileage & moisture that is otherwise not as stellar. Trust, these lip-stains do not disappoint! Hope they’re never discontinued! And you can’t be the price point. #WnWFergieVisciousVarnishHighShineLipStain

I, too, am a Milani fan. Their lip products are some of the best at the drugstore, and better than some higher end brands. I haven’t been a user of NARS glosses, but just picked up Orgasm and loving it so far. Also, Black Opal just came to drugstores in The Bahamas so that super exciting. Thanks for this great post.
