Ask Afrobella – Avoiding Eyeshadow Creasing

by afrobella

I discovered a new product that I’m itching to try to help with eyeshadow creasing! It provides an answer to a recent question one of my readers asked. So here’s another Ask Afrobella for all y’all.

rkj asks:

I have an eye shadow question. How do you keep the color from creasing? I’m new to the extensive makeup game. I always have color in the folds and nowhere else after 2 hrs or so

Another regular reader, Earthtone advised her to use foundation or concealer on the lid then apply the eyeshadow. Great advice, Earthtone! And also, I really like that the comments pages are a community. I’m no beauty expert, so I appreciate when you guys add your personal experience and expertise to the discourse. Not to be corny, but I love you guys!

I think every woman has experienced eyeshadow creasing.

It sucks, and that’s partially why I prefer to just line the top of my lid with a fat eye pencil or crayon for everyday use. I typically dust my lids with powder before applying. However, even in Iman’s book, The Beauty of Color, she says that mid day creasing is unavoidable with cream eye shadows. But then I discovered this miraculous product, Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

Eyeshadow creasing relief

It promises to completely prevent eyeshadow creasing, which sounds like a good deal at $14. (Apparently that can be even less if you’re as lucky as my friend Jessica was, when she caught a clearance sale at the Urban Decay outlet store!) I don’t own this product (yet…) but 91% of Makeup Alley reviewers say they’ll buy it again. That’s a hell of an endorsement in my book.

Look out for a big eye shadow review coming soon, too. I finally got my hands on some HIP and I’ve got a lot to say! In the meantime, let me know if you’ve come across anything to help avoid eyeshadow creasing.

You know what, Coffy… you might be right. I swear she told me there was a store, but I can’t find it online. I’ll have to send her a MySpace message to get to the bottom of this Urban Decay sale mystery.

I got to the bottom of the Urban Decay mystery! My friend Jess sez: “There was a store at Sawgrass but the reason they were having the ridiculous sale was because they were closing and this was awhile ago back in May I think. Believe me I was totally sad to see them go because it was the only place to get heavily discounted urban decay. So yeah no more Urban Decay store. I feel like that always happens you fall in love with a store and then they close on ya.”

    Ain’t that the truth!

there is also another product that you might also want to try…m.a.c. paints. these paints have silicone in them and when you put them on, they stay on! the silicone also prevents creasing of eyeshadow. paints are $15, but a little goes a long way, and they can be worn alone or with a shadow on top. they come in shimmery and matte shades ranging from neutral brown, to chartreuse and everything in between. i have worked as a make-up artist for the past four years and these babies are ALWAYS in my makeup kit. worth a try. you should be able to get a small sample at most m.a.c. counters. best applied in a thin layer with a firm, broad brush like the m.a.c. #252 or with a clean finger.

    peace

Thanks so much for this. I always wondered what I could do to keep the eye product from sliding on my lid. Powder does help to control the oil that makes the product crease.

I should download and save this page to my hard drive!

Thanks for expanding my question into a full post.

What also works for me is putting a creme shadow first in a neutal shade over the entire lid nd then putting on your powder eyeshadow. Just stumbling upon your site today Bella and I must say it’s impressive. I’m working my way through your hair posts since my hair is naturally curly and dry too. Only thing is, it’s hard to get a good variety of products where I live (London).

I agree with Naadii: MAC Paints are the bomb. I work long hours at clubs and they’re the only thing that keeps my makeup on no matter what. They go from wet to set in 10 seconds and they keep your eyeshadow or pigment on for hours. They also make another format called “Shadesticks” which are twist up silicone shimmer sticks in a wide range of vibrant colors. All that and no animal testing – yay for MAC!

I love mac makeups. They make cost, but they last and the colors are amazing. They are worth every penny in my opinion.

Oh yeah try ebay for mac makeup, if u find a few colors you like but want to save a couple bucks.

I have the Urban Decay product you mention . . . although it definitely gets the job done in terms of keeping your eye color on all day, the one thing it does not do is prevent the “shadow” effect from eyeliner. (I’m not sure if this is the “creasing” you are referring to.) The only thing that has worked for me to prevent shadowing is to apply some eyeshadow to my lid before application. (I use a tone that’s virtually the same color as my own skin so it doesn’t look like I have on any shadow.) But, your eye color WILL last all day with the UD potion!

Now here’s another question for you, Afrobella (and others): How do you highlight your brows without looking like a clown? I’ve been trying to master that for ages (lightest shade below the brow, neutral shade on the lid, darkest shade in between for contour) and I still can’t get it right! Help!

i have personally used this product and would recommend it highly. I used some just this weekend when I did my friend’s make-up for her wedding and her eyes looked fabulous the entire night; eyeshadow looked like it was just applied.

    Hope this helps

love the mac pigments myself…they last forever…especially if you get them in a couple of your favorite shades. i’m excited about hearing what the HIP pigments are all about…can a sister get a sneak peek….why pay more when i can pay less and look just as fab!
