Is Your Towel a Curl’s Best Friend?

by afrobella

This is a little product review follow-up to yesterday’s post… so many of you had such great suggestions for young C. One thing that kept coming up is towel use on curly natural hair…. and I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this product before. I use it on the daily!

My curls absolutely despise heavy terry towels — I inevitably wind up with more shedding than I want. Which led me on a wild goose chase for the perfect hair towel. Currently I’m using CurlEase, a super thin, super absorbent “towel” that soaks up the water from my thirsty hair in no time at all. If I knew exactly what kind of cloth this was, I’d tell ya to go to Joann’s and by yourself some… but I honestly have not a clue. It’s as thin and light as linen or cheesecloth, but definitely way more absorbent.

I got my Curlease towel at Bed, Bath, and Beyond — gotta love those 20% off discount coupons you get in the mail! But you can also get yours from the sistas at Sistas Place, or Canadian bellas can try Honey Fig.

Some bellas find that Curlease isn’t quite absorbent enough, and a microfiber towel is also a great investment — get one here on Amazon — some bellas love them, others say that they feel like velcro on their hair and actually create more frizz. I don’t know, because I’ve never tried one. Have you?

What kind of towel do you dry your natural tresses with?

Sounds like a good product. I wonder if it feels similar to a chamois/shammy (synthetic) cloth used for cars?

I’m going to look into that CurlEase towel. I’ve seen it before, but didn’t know if it would work on kinky hair (as opposed to curly).

I wonder if I would work on kinky hair too. I tend not to use a towel at all, or maybe a paper towel to catch the drippies.

I just use a regular bath towel, and haven’t had any problems with my hair (locked) or my daughter’s (loose and natural).

Ooh, I absolutely love my Curlease towel! It is definitely “on-point”! However, I didn’t know that I could find them at the local Bed Bath and Beyond. That’s for the heads-up on that. I do want another one for the gym. I’m also going to purchase the Aquis towel from Qhemet Biologics (www.qhemetbiologics.com). I’m itching to try it. It’s supposed to be super absorbent.

ChocolateOrchid, do you have kinky hair, or is your hair more spirally and thick? I’m like Sabrina97, I never really use a towel on my or my kids’ hair, and I’ve noticed that it behaves better. However, I’m always open to new things. My children have longer, thicker hair than I do, and this might be nice at least for when they get out of the pool (swim caps just don’t do their job).

On the affordable, product you already have tip…. lots of bellas just use an old tee shirt for their hair drying needs. And those Viva paper towels are pretty amazing and really absorbent!

I don’t even use a towel on my head b/c:
    1. I like my hair to be soaking wet when I’m working w/ it
    2. The towel promotes frizziness and breakage. I just gently ring my hair w/ my hands and get to work.

    Hi Brebroma!
I think that my hair is a mix of coily/curly/kinkyness. But I pretty much see my hair as kinky. I’ve discovered that everybody tends see things a little (if not alot) differently. I put my hair in the category of 4b/4a, if that makes sense. I must say, I do prefer the wet approach (in Summer) when I’m not immediately going anywhere. The towel helps me when I’m getting ready for work or after I shower after a workout. Don’t want the water dripping on me once I get dressed.

I don’t use a towel either. I just let my hair air dry and catch the drippys with a paper towel. If my hair is too soaking wet then I’ll squeeze out the excess water with my hands, shake and go.

Thank you, ChocolateOrchid! Your comment helped a lot, and I think if I get one, it will be for, like I said, when they get out of the pool before I tie it back.

i LOVE my curlease towel. no other towel leaves my hair as frizz-free after one of my long in-shower clearing-out sessions. for those of you using normal bath towels, if you can try it out. it makes a world of difference.

also, speaking of my clearing-out sessions bella, they have been made considerably shorter thanks to the great cream of nature products i got in the giveaway a while back. THANK YOU!!!!!

the deep conditioner that came in the sample detangled my hair wonderfully, and my hair is long and loves to tangle! so thanks again for all of your advice here and your great giveaways. you rock!

I have a question for those of you who do use the Curlease towel.
Do you put product or moisturizer on your hair before or after drying w/towel? I ask b/c I normally throw a moisturizer on my hair before wrapping the towel around it. Call me silly, but I was thinking that this helps to put the moisture in my hair. My hair turns out fine. I’m just wondering b/c I don’t let it fully dry. Once I unwrap the towel I add some gel and seal w/an oil.

Please let me know your thoughts….

Paper towel has been my towel of choice for a while even though my husband say it’s waisting. He just don’t know what I go through to keep this hair of mine together.Anyway i’m going to try curlease, because I can’t stand to loose all of the hair that I loose with a towel.

    ChocolateOrchid:

On the site, it mentions alternative uses and it includes using a moisturizer first. I know that using a moisturizer on my hair when its dry is a BAD idea.

This blog is so informative! Hopefully CurlEase can give my towels some relief. Picking strands out at the laundromat is NOT an option anymore!

Thanks Bella I am going to try this. What are your suggestions for dry hair, I have a section of my hair in the front that is sooooo dry it ruins everything else. Any products or tips??

I had no idea using a regular towel was not a good thing! I never noticed any change in my hair. I’m going to try to use something else and see what happens.

I use a t-shirt to dry my hair. Just a plain, no pattern, no dye t-shirt. It’s softer on my hair and I noticed that I have a lot less breakage when I use it. I have been using it for the past couple months now and I have to admit I see a 95% reduction in breakage.

I think I will try the drip-dry method and just use the t-shirt for the excess water that ends up all down my face and neck and see how that works too. But I need a better moisturizer, something to bring out my natural curl pattern. I can’t wait to get back to the States so I can try some of the products talked about on this blog.

    Calming Corners:

I recently won the Creme of Nature gift package (courtesy of our girl Bella) and I’ve been using the Red Clover and Aloe Soothing Shampoo (for dry hair and flaky scalp) and the Jojoba and Olive Oil Moisture Active Deep-Conditioning Treatment (for dehydrated hair). Fantastic stuff for moisturizing dry hair. You only need to use the tiniest bit of shampoo as it suds up somethin’ fierce! and the conditioner…ooh, does it ever moisturize. You might give those a try.

P.S. — If you ever find out where to buy them, do post. I’ve been scouring my local area and online only to be disappointed.

    Best,
    M-

P.P.S. — I’ve been using a regular old terry cloth towel, but I might give curlease a try…

    Hi Paradisebird,

In my search for international shipping I ran across malikonline.com. They do ship to Germany. Mind you I have not placed on order so I cannot offer a personal reference but I’d guess that you could snoop around and find some references online. Hope that helps.

lala….really? ooh okay then. even if it’s not 100% birdseye, that fabric may work well in lieu of a cotton towel. I may have to try that out! thanks a bunch 😀

Afrobella, you bring the world together! Thanks a lot!

    Hey all,

I am a guy that knows nothing about hair but is steadily trying to do something with my curl/frizz hair. DO these towels work for men? Is there a great one to recommend because there are alot on amazon and the product reviews vary. Can anyone help me out?

a great tip I got from naturally curly about the curlease towel is that it’s basically a flour sack towel (which is very similar to linen in feel) that you can buy at Walmart or Target in a 5pack for $5 dollars. I bought it and I love it. My microfiber towel had been pulling at my kinks but this definitely does the trick. If I need to dry my hair even faster, I first wrap my hair in the flour sack towel then the microfiber towel, and when I wake up, my hair is dry!! Check it out ladies, and at $1 a piece, u cant go wrong!!

I’ve been wearing a weave since …forever. Now, my hair is really long and I’m ready to wear my real nappy hair out and about. 🙂

I live in NYC and I’ve heard alot about Miiko and curve salon. I would like to try the “silkener” @ Miiko’s shop in DC but I’m concerned that a chemical – no matter how sensitive the chemical claims to be – may damage my hair.

My question: Has anyone tried Miiko’s silkener? Did you encounter any damage? Thanks

Honestly, I think an old t-shirt will do the job. It dries the hair while leaving the curls defined without frizziness. I read this somewhere else a few weeks ago and it works for me….A tip for those of us on a tight budget 🙂

  33. tbyrd

I abandoned towel drying after I realized that it was bad for my hair. I wring my hair dry then style it or let it air dry while it’s in a bun or plaits. It’s worked out much better.

  34. p1tey1

    at

Just like Tbyrd, I let my hair air dry. I read someplace that cotton towels were not good for people with dry hair because they remove moisture.

I might start using an old t-shirt like Kweenie. Thanks for the tip Kweenie!

An outstanding share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a colleague who was doing
a little homework on this. And he in fact bought me lunch
because I discovered it for him… lol. So let me reword this….
Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending time to talk about this matter here on your
    internet site.

Amazon has the Curl-ease towel in pink: http://www.amazon.com/Curl-ease-Towel-Curly-Hair-Pink/dp/B015NNYDNS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1444106552&sr=8-2&keywords=curl-ease+towel

    I really like this one!
Bed, Bath and Beyond doesn’t carry it anymore.
