RIP Amy Winehouse

by afrobella

Amy, Amy, Amy.

Amy Winehouse, RIP Amy Winehouse

I’m not even sure what else to say that hasn’t already been said over the course of this tragic weekend. Amy Winehouse’s death is incredibly sad but I believe even her most diehard fans would have a hard time calling it surprising. It was the news you never wanted to hear, even though the headlines resounded with awful inevitability.

It’s hard to know what else to say other than it’s heartbreaking, and so many of us fans around the world were rooting for her to get it together. To stop throwing all of that talent to waste. To find stability and happiness and enough love to fill the void that so clearly existed within her.

I hope wherever Amy Winehouse is now, she’s free of everything that weighed her soul down in her 27 years of life. I hope when she is remembered, it’s for the enormity of her talent and not of her appetites. I hope her music lives forever, and isn’t overshadowed by her membership in that tragic, romanticized club of musicians who left this life too early.

Amen. True, true talent was in this girl’s DNA. My heart just hurts for her family. May her soul rest in peace.

I was looking forward to hearing more great music from this talented woman.

Favorite song, “Love’s A Losing Game”. So many of today’s “singers” sing about nonsense. Amy’s lyrics were deep and sometimes hilarious.

    She will be missed.

    RIP

RIP Amy. I think I loved her because she felt what she was singing.

My favorite songs-“F**K Me Pumps”, “Love is Such A Losing Game” I could listen to both albums over and over without ever getting tired of it.

So many people have a hard time understanding addiction.. It’s not as simple as go to rehab and just stop doing drugs.. even those people who are sober now will tell you that it is a fight and a struggle and your body/mind will always crave that drug. It comes to a point where it’s no longer about the euphoric feeling of being high, it’s about making it through the day. For an addict, their drug of choice is like breathing or eating.. their mind leads them to believe it’s absolutely necessary. My heart breaks for her family, especially her father because she was such a daddy’s girl. They lost their only daughter and everywhere they turn they’re assaulted by headlines and blog posts and commenters saying how stupid she was. I appreciate that this post was a positive one. I hope that Amy is able to find the peace in the afterlife that she was so unable to find in this life.

I don’t know where to start. I have been a fan of Amy’s since Frank released in the UK. I have even won money singing her songs in Karaoke. i had a bizarre obsession with Amy that led me to wear dramatic makeup like hers and write her name with sharpies on my hand. As an artist, songwriter, entertainer she was amazing. It was evident from her first album that she was a drug user. Frank had songs like “Addicted” where she told her friend that her boyfriend always wanted to smoke all her weed. In another song she said, “you love blow and I love puff…” I am not surprised at her untimely death. I am sad. She was talented and will be missed. I just pray that her death is not in vain. I hope that other drug users learn that they are not indestructable and that everything should be done in moderation. I hope that media doesn’t joke about her drug abuse either. Addiction is not funny. RIP Amy Amy Amy

Even though she was sliding toward this sad ending rapidly in the last couple of years, I had hoped hard that she would be able to heal and thrive as a person–even if she had never sang another note. In life, there is always the possibility of change and death ends that possibility. I wish her soul peace and healing for her family and friends.

I was also put off by the snarky comments some people have been saying, like human pain and suffering is on a hierarchy or that people can’t be sad about this and other events in the world at the same time.

Anyhow, I hope people remember Amy for her talent as an interpreter of song and her gift for writing deeply personal, witty, and sardonic lyrics. At a time in music where every other artist is shrink-wrapped, focus-grouped and product-endorsed to the hilt, Amy’s music had that raw quality. I wish that I had a chance to see her live on top of her game! Her live versions of “You Sent Me Flying” and “Love Is A Losing Game” give me chills! RIP Amy!

She was such an amazing talent. Part Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin. Her second album got her critical acclaim but her first album Frank was amazing too. I work out to it a lot.

There is not one Amy Winehoue song that is not a favorite for me. Both albums remain in heavy rotation years after their release! She’s a talented that can not be duplicated– the cleverness of her writing skills; her singing brought back an era that forced me to explore R&B further than I ever could have imagined and pushed many musicians to release albums reminiscent of the dop-wop/Motown era that still lingers to this day.
It’s never easy to live a balanced life when it is plagued with demons. And sadly she, herself, sung that she wasn’t interested in the help she so desperately needed. We truly lost a talent, but I’m not surprised by her passing. I just wish she had the fight in her that she sang about so beautifully… Maybe she needed more supportive people on her team and by her side.
Perhaps she’d still be with us today. I pray her soul is finally at peace…

“Me and Mr. Jones” has become my favorite although “Tears Dry on Their Own” was up there for years. The way she sang “Besides Sammy you’re my best black jew” took me out every time. I hate that we lost her so soon.

Really? Why is a site dedicated to the beautification of the natural hair of our queens spending any energy on the deaths of unnatural beings?
Our biggest issue is showing our souls to the soulless and we haven’t learned our lessons yet.
If its part of the contract of existing on the web, I can dig it. You do what you need to in order to survive, but otherwise, leave them be.

An amazing artist and troubled soul, who I hope is finally at peace. I can’t pick one favorite because she had so many I listen to both cd’s quite often I love her version of Moody’s Mood For Love, Mr. Magic, and Stronger Than Me.I was so sorry to hear the news, hopefully he can now rest in peace.

“unnatural beings?” The first time I posted about Amy Winehouse on this blog was in 2007. In fact, I got comments over the weekend from folks who said they first learned about Amy Winehouse’s music from my blog.

Astoundingly, I can continue my role in spreading news and information about natural hair and at the same time, share my feelings about the death of a talented yet troubled singer. Also I don’t think it’s my place in this life to judge who is natural or unnatural.

There is no “contract” for me to have a blog on the web. I can write about who or what I choose. The tagline of this blog is ALL shades of beautiful. If that bothers you…I’m not sure what else to say.

    Bella,

I was really hoping you would do a post on Winehouse and her untimely passing. You may not know this, but you introduced her to me in a blog post I guess in 2007/2006 (before her second CD was released in the US). It was a live performance of Back to Black. I was struck by her unique sound and look. I wanted more. LW was poppin’ at the time and let’s just say I found most of the tracks. That proved to be just an introduction. I now have Frank and the B sides. I wanted more, but it was not meant to be. A young woman who captured the spirit of wit, vulnerability and cynicism of those who came of age after 9/11 is gone. I don’t think she ever knew how bright her star was.

The death of Amy has left me with a couple of questions. I think there is something deeply immoral about our media-driven culture and I wonder what role that played in Amy’s demise. The media set this young woman up as the next big thing, just to gleefully watch her crash and burn. Please recall a few years ago, there was a death watch for Brittany Spears. More recently, it was Lindsey Lohan. It’s seems that American audiences and some celebrities managed to force tabloids to lay off those two. In light of UK media scandals, we see Amy wasn’t given a reprieve. She really didn’t have a chance to recover. Every setback in her journey (and I’m sure that’s the case for most severe addictions) was publicized, a reminder of every mistake. It’s bound to take it’s toll on anyone.

Finally, I wonder if this was what Lauryn was afraid of. Did she sense that the very people who give you Grammys and offer you movie roles would cross their arms and shake their hands as you descend into madness because you are alone at the top.

    @Kofi:

What I think is most “unnatural” is your inability to be compassionate about the loss of human life … That you would take the energy to direct criticism at Bella for using her blog to recognize a God-gifted member of the human race is just unconscionable.

Thank you, Bella, for taking the time to recognize Amy. I saw her spirit immediately and loved her for it. “Love is A Losing Game” is truly a beautiful song.

May God grant peace to her family at this difficult time.

Loved Amy Winehouse. Although her death is not shocking, its no less tragic. I like many others was rooting for her to pull her life together, but unfortunately it was not to be. Hard to pick a favorite, but Love is a Losing Game and Back to Black are probably the top. RIP.

Since a friend played Back to Black for me over a few glasses of wine maybe three or four years ago, I went nuts to get ‘more’ of Amy’s music. I bought every B side track, every cover, everything so I could hear all of the nuance in her voice (a true musical instrument). I won’t even get into the fact that her lyrics were the freshest, sharpest, most knowing lyrics out there in the sea of syrupy ‘pop’……

At least once a month for the past 18 months or so, I have googled for news of the elusive 3rd album, and prayed that she would pull herself together. I hope there’s enough good material to release a posthumous album and put me out of my misery of longing for more of her music. I am a music junkie, and Amy was my freshest ‘find’ in years.

My faves? hard to pick….Tears Dry on Their Own, Back to Black, F@#k Me Pumps, her cover of Moody’s Mood for Love….. RIP Amy, the people who judge with conviction don’t matter, because we will all face real Judgment from our maker one day.

Definitely “you know I’m no good”. Everything about it starts my hips wigglin and fingers snappin. Everytime I hear it is like the first time. I loved how sexy Amy was in a way that seemed so genuine and natural. I was waiting for a new record also. I was waiting for a lifetime of new records. How truly horrible this is.

I saw on yahoo that toxicology tests show no illegal drugs in her body. Poor baby girl. My heart hurt when I heard this news. I was pulling for her. I wanted her to get and stay clean. Maybe she was trying to do so and her little heart was just tired. She made such a splash on the music world in such a short period of time. Now you can rest all is well Amy.
