Wow, I haven’t done an Ask Afrobella since 2008! And wow, I was dancing around my own future in the last one I wrote.
My sincerest apologies to all of you who’ve asked questions in the interim. I’m going to rectify this ASAP, starting with a very local, very specific, very time-sensitive Ask Afrobella. This might not be the kind of post that gets a ton of comments from bellas all over the world, but this just might be crucial if you plan to visit the Magic City sometime soon.
Here goes:
Hello Afrobella,
First of all, I love love your blog. I think its fantastic. Wanted to ask your advice on the best place to get a bikini wax in Miami, I know you used to live there. I’m coming to South Beach this weekend and would love to hear your view on this and any other tips on hot places to try out, :-), if you have time. Thanks a lot and I hope to hear back from you.
Sincerely,
A
You came to the right person, A! Not only do I blog here at Afrobella, but I have a beauty blog for the Miami New Times, Patrice’s Pretty in the City. The plan is for me to do Patrice’s Pretty in the City until I move to Chicago in April or May. So if you’re visiting the 305 and need a spa recommendation or head’s up on a locally made product, I’m your girl until then!
Miami’s quite a wax-happy city so there’s likely to be a perfectly good place near you, wherever you stay. But my time here has led me to have some favorite places, and some hell-no-please-don’t-go places. Let me guide you to a place that won’t leave you feeling like the bikini wax kitteh you see above.
Click the links to see more detailed reviews about any of these Miami-area day spas and wax centers, and remember these are all personal-experience spa reviews. So I hope your experience turns out to be as great as mine in the places I recommend!
If you’re staying on South Beach, I recommend you visit Lace Nail Lab or Lace Beauty Lab. This place is beautiful, modern, luxurious, fun… everything you want SoBe to be. It’s very pink, very girlie, and they offer all kinds of services from manis to makeup to yes, maintaining the love below.
In my honest opinion, one of the best places you can go to is in Coconut Grove. Wax On, Wax Off is probably my favorite wax joint in the city. And this isn’t just because of their bangin’ selection of earrings available for sale, or their complimentary mimosas. Those help too, though! The gals at Wax On, Wax Off are super professional and super friendly (without being TOO friendly, as some waxers can be if you know what I mean. Heyo!). And the prices won’t hurt a bit either.
If you’re downtown, hit up the place I got my nostrils waxed — the Medhur Day Spa. It’s clean and spare, has a fab selection of flip flops for sale, and the waxers are so professional. It won’t hurt a bit, and it’s in a fairly accessible and popular part of Biscayne Boulevard.
In South Miami there’s Wonderskin, a super clean, super fast strip mall European-type wax place that’s just all about cleanliness, professionalism, and efficiency. They’ve seen it all at Wonderskin and zip, zip, rip – you’ll be in and out in no time, hair free.
If you’re in Kendall (I live there, which is why I can ask, why on earth would you come to Miami and visit Kendall?) Anyway, there’s a dude holding up a big sign that says FREE WAXING on Kendall and 124th or thereabouts. If you follow his sign, it’ll lead you to The European Wax Center, a chain that’s barebones but will effectively bare your bones, if you know what I’m sayin’ and I think you do.
A cozier alternative is the adorable Aqua Day Spa, one of those strip-mall surprises that makes you want to come back for more. The owner is a super sweet lady, too.
A, I hope that helps you, and any of the Miami bellas looking to maintain their bikini line.
And hey — maybe you’ve got a favorite place to get waxed in your city. Tell me where in the comments, you could be helping another bella in an emergency situation!

J. Sisters is an awesome place to go in Miami. They are fantastic. Their sister store in NYC is pretty good as well. I highly recommend Theresa (NYC). She’s quick, efficient, and not snooty like most of the other waxers there.
Dana G.
I go to Fuzz Studio in Chicago. Laura Lopez owns it and she’s an artist!
JJ Fad
In the ATL I recommend Tracy and Celestial Spa. The spa is Black owned and it did not hurt nearly as much as I expected even when I went there on the first try. They are off Cascade Road and very comparable to any spa in Atlanta. http://www.celestialspa.com/
Penze
Peter of London in Kendall also has an ACE waxer.

I’m still considering getting one for the summer, just to try it out. Any suggestions about where to go in the northern VA area?

Nikki, if you go into the city, try the Skin Beauty Lounge. They are excellent.

Does anyone know of a good spot in the Tampa area?

Afrobella, maybe you can help me out. First off, I don’t think I’ll ever try bikini waxing ever again. The first time was emotionally scarring (you don’t want to know the details). So, I basicaly prefer to shave. I’ve notice that for me the best option is to use and electrical razor on not a disposable one. I get lots of ingrown hairs, especially on my inner thighs and they leave horrible scars. I have tried these pads from Sephora…I forgot the name of them and I’m not to sure they are working. I was going to by one of those new microdermabrasion kits and use in that are because I heard exfoliation is a big part of it. Do recommend any products or procedures. Feel free to let me your secrets as well bellas!

sorry for screw ups in my typing 🙂

My favorite place to get bare down there is Bliss Wax/ Wax Spa, in Biscayne Blvd. They won Miami City Search’s Best Hair Removal for 2007 and Best Brazilian Wax for 2008.
THEY ARE THE BEST! They are super far from where I live but it is TOTALLY worth it! Very professional, discreet, painless (seriously!) and the pricing is awesome. I rave about them to everyone. Hope this helps. <3
