Natural Hair Events, Everywhere!!

by afrobella

I found this photo of a hair show from the 1920’s, featuring the products of Madam CJ Walker, and it struck me.

Madam CJ Walker

Hair shows and events are a part of our collective history, dating back further than I had assumed. Hair shows have traditionally been about sharing and displaying pride in our unique beauty. And the explosion of natural hair events now is a true reflection of how powerful the movement has become.

Nowadays, there are natural hair events taking place on a regular basis, in just about every major city in America. If you live in a city like Atlanta or Chicago, there’s a steady stream of events to enjoy. It can be difficult to keep track sometimes, so I’m here to help! Here are some of the upcoming natural hair events I’m currently aware of, around the country — and if you know of any I’m missing, please feel free to leave a comment about it below!

Natural Is Not A Fad – October 15, 2011 – Westin Hotel, National Harbor, MD. Click to buy tickets!

Koils By Nature Natural Is Not a Fad event

Pamela of Koils By Nature is having her very first event, and she told me, “This event is like meetup and a expo had a baby!” Pamela has carefully curated the event, so expect the best in hair and body care, jewelry and apparel, plus makeovers and makeup tips by Lamik Beauty. “Lamik Beauty is the first eco-chic makeup brand, including facial care & lashes. Lamik gives makeup a new purpose, women a new zeal for applying it, and healthy platform for its existence. Every woman is empowered by being includes all races and ages. There will also be education on Environmental Health by Katrina the Eco-Green Queen, a wellness expert and her main goal is a “green” healthier living! There’s a blogger discussion panel and Q & A Session with Cassidy of Natural Selection, Jameka of Pretty Natural Divas, Jennifer Lord of Naturally Me Salon and Pamela S. Jenkins of Koils by Nature, a natural hair & fashion show by Jennifer Lord that will show natural hair in every aspect, nutritional information provided by Joy Diggs of Digg Deep Personal Training, and a Zumba fitness party with Sharnia Murray.”

Clumps of Mascara’s Natural Connections – A Natural Hair Party – Orlando, Florida. October 15. Click to RSVP!

My booski Brittany of Clumps of Mascara, together with T. Gaines Entertainment, will be hosting something special for the ladies in central Florida! Brittany says “Transitioners, newbies and veterans a like will enjoy the laid back and fun atmosphere — this is the perfect event to bring a friend who has expressed interest in going natural, but still has reservations.” Sounds awesome!

Natural Chica’s Naturally Pretty – October 27, Atlanta, Georgia Click here to get tickets!

Yay! Mae of Natural Chica is co-hosting with Mimi J Online called “Naturally Pretty”, which will take place on Thursday, October 27 in Atlanta. She says, “During the event, industry leaders in cosmetics, skincare, and natural hair care will partner together to educate and inform event goers of how to bring out their natural beauty through complimentary consultations as well as live beauty demonstrations. There will also be live musical performances, celebrity guest appearances, prize giveaways, light refreshments, and beautiful aesthetics to enjoy. Part of the proceeds will also go to the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.” Yours truly will be making a special appearance via video, so look out for me 🙂

Wonderfully Made Natural Hair and Beauty Expo – October 29 and 30, Orlando, FL Click here for tickets!

Natural Hair Expo

The incredible Felicia Leatherwood will be part of this event in O-Town, and the workshops all look to be incredibly informative. If you’re a natural hair stylist or salon professional looking to gain knowledge in your field, this looks like THE event to attend!

The Mane Source and Natural Chica’s Treasure our Tresses – November 5, Chicago Click here for tickets!

The Mane Source event

Co-hosted by Bree of The Mane Source, Natural Chica’s coming from ATL to Chicago for this special event sponsored by Eden Body Works! Cocktails, appetizers, and natural hair love in the air. Can’t wait!

Black Girl With Long Hair and Taliah Waajid’s Christmas Festival – December 10, Chicago Click here for details!

BGLH event

The eager crowd of naturals at a BGLH event

I tip my hat to Leila of BGLH — she’s become the queen of natural hair events in the Midwest! Her events really do command attention and bring out naturals like you wouldn’t believe. I’m looking forward to this event — it’s gonna be even bigger than ever! It’ll be held at the UIC Forum from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m, there are more than 80 vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to vintage clothes and body products. Guess where I’ll be doing some of my Christmas shopping?

I love a good natural hair event, bellas! I don’t plan on hosting any in 2011, but you’ll see me on the circuit next year. I’m working on a few beauty-related events of my own, and making special appearances at some special events around the country — hopefully I’ll be at a city near you in 2012!

Do you know of an upcoming natural hair event? Did I miss out or forget to mention it? Oh no! Please leave the event info in the comments below, and please feel free to post your event flyer on my Facebook wall (but please don’t SPAM my wall! Thanks!)

Why does it seem there are never any of these on the West Coast? Other than one in Seattle, there is nothing in the Los Angeles or Las Vegas area. There are a bunch of us who have gone natural and would love to attend one of these. How does one even go about making something like that happen?

I think everything said was actually very reasonable. But, what about this? suppose you composed a catchier title? I ain’t suggesting your information is not solid., however what if you added a title that grabbed people’s attention? I mean BLOG_TITLE is a little plain. You could peek at Yahoo’s home page and note how they create news headlines to grab people to click. You might add a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what you’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it might make your posts a little bit more interesting.|
