Event Recap: My NYFW Natural Hair Blogger Meetup in NYC!

by afrobella

It all started on Twitter, when I mentioned I’d be in town for New York Fashion Week. First one natural hair blogger mentioned they wanted to meet me. Then another. Then I said – what if I had some kind of natural hair blogger meetup during Fashion Week? After that, the concept snowballed into something so beautiful! Held at the Karen’s Body Beautiful store and spa on Sunday September 12, this was an amazing celebration and I was SO honored to have put it together!

First – photos!!

I’m proudly wearing the sexy and on-trend animal print empire waist dress by Lotis Clothing. Lotis is all about strong, feminine, well tailored, beautifully fitting dresses for women in sizes small to 3x. I was honored to rock their dress – accented beautifully with my Scarpasa shoes and Peace Images necklace!

Here I am with the Lotis Clothing team, the lovely Tina Graham and Michelle Slaughter. Thank you ladies so much for your generosity – LOVE this dress!

This is my boo Renae, she is brilliant on SO many levels, but you all might know her as the blogger behind In Her Shoes, one of the most inspirational blogs I can think of! She is also the incredible PR for KBB, and she helped me put this amazing event together. She is a guiding light and I LOVE me some Renae!

Here’s the gorgeous Karen Tappin, creator of Karen’s Body Beautiful. She’s showing me her new website which will be AMAZING! I’ll be sure to let you all know when it’s available for all to see, it will be a resource for great natural hair information.

Andrea of Fly is a darling! Love her, she is always so sweet and supportive of her sister bloggers. She has a great energy and I always love spending time with her. And she’s super cute too!

I got to meet Chescaleigh!! She is HILARIOUS and sweet and super cool, everything I dreamed she’d be. It was such a pleasure to meet her!

Renae and the beautiful, bubbly and bright Kristen Tate. She is such a ray of light, love being in her presence!

Empress Ri is a YouTube superstar in case you didn’t know! And YES that is ALL her hair and it’s ALL NATURAL. She was such a sweetheart and it was so great to meet her!

Sasha Shae of Afroniquely You is so awesome, very friendly and down to earth and so supportive of her fellow bloggers. I love what she does and appreciate her so much! Check out Afroniquely You for an amazing recap including photos of all of us!

That’s me and my childhood friend Onya. She moved from Trinidad when we were 9, and we literally haven’t seen each other since! Now she’s got a food blog – Macafouchette – AND she’s the driving force behind Socamotion, a new exercise movement that’s burning up Brooklyn. Onya is amazing. SO good to catch up with old friends!

My boo DeeDee of The Sassy Peach getting her nails done!

And here’s DeeDee, Chescaleigh, and Andrea. Such a beautiful picture!

Aisha 1908 has gorgeous natural hair and style to spare. It was so great to meet her!

Jamala of Le Coil is SO sweet and funny!

See? LOL!

We had an absolute blast. Breakfast, manicures and pedicures, and lots of natural hair love went down in Brooklyn that day. DESPITE the rain!

And no party would be complete without gift bags, right?

SO much love and thanks to everyone who helped to make the FIRST ANNUAL Afrobella/Karen’s Body Beautiful NYFW Blogger Tweetup a huge success.

Thanks to Lotis Clothing, Peace Images and Scarpasa for making me look beautiful!

Thanks to my sisters Renae and Karen for their hospitality! Love you ladies! See you next year!!

Looks like there was such presence of energy in that room, I would have loved to have been a part of it, loving all the beautiful natural hair styles everyone is rocking!

Looks like a blast! Maybe because natural hair is still in the minority where I live, the events kind of take on a “lets drum in a circle, burn incense and call to the ancestors poetry slam” thing instead of a celebration of the fabulosity & fierceness (and just plain cuteness!) of natural hair!’

So sad I missed it, Lord knows I tried but this sistah has to be in the Lords house Sunday morn to get my week straight. Everyone looks great, so happy it was a successful event. I will catch you next NY trip bella, Lord knows we been trying for like 2-3 years.

    Thanks Bella,
I’m just a sap. Pictures like these make me cry; to see all these beautiful black women with natural hairstyles and oh so confident. Lovely. Naturals in mass is powerful. I see more advertisements on TV and in print everyday with naturals. Thanks to websites like yours we can truly express our diversity.
