Makeup Tips from Damone Roberts!

by afrobella

I’m making a prediction right here and now. Sometime in the not-too-distant future, Damone Roberts’ phone is gonna ring. And on the other end, will be someone making an appointment for the First Lady.

Damone Roberts is known as the Eyebrow King. He believes that every face deserves the perfect frame, and makeup starts with a good brow. He’s got a salon on New York’s Fifth Avenue, and another in Beverly Hills. His artwork has graced the faces of celebrities like Madonna, Beyoncé, Mandy Moore, Vanessa Williams, and Brandy. He believes in the power of attraction and he is putting it out there to the universe — he wants to work with Michelle O.

“I would LOVE to get my hands on those brows! Because she’s a beautiful woman, but her arch is too extreme. I want to make it a little softer, a little prettier,” he explained, as we met during the Macy’s Women of Color event — here he is in the green room with the lovely Patrece Williams. Look out for her makeup tips next week!

Naturally, I took the opportunity to ask Damone all about his specific makeup tips for beautiful black women who want to enhance their natural beauty. Some of his tips were downright surprising! Without further ado, here are some top tips from The Eyebrow King.

1. “Anything who knows anything about eyebrows knows it’s not about trends — thick or thin brows. It’s about finding the best shaped brow for your face. And I say the thicker the better. It really makes a difference. Thin brows can make you look too stern.”

2. “When I shape brows, I start with wax, but then I tweeze. I’m not a personal fan of threading. The thread is kept in their mouth and it’s constantly moved around… it’s not the most sanitary method, in my opinion.”

3. “If you need to fill in your brows, don’t use an eyeliner pencil. They’re too soft, they’re waxy, and they don’t look good. Get a brow pencil, or brow powder with the right brush. It all depends on your personal preference.”

Damone sells his own brand of brow pencils, powders, gel… everything. And for women of color, he recommends his soft black brow pencil. The name of the color? Miss Ross. Love it! He also loves MAC’s brow pencils in Strut and Spiked for brown skinned bellas.

4. “I want to tell women of color about the power of pink! We’re so safe with brown, bronze, and gold makeup. But pink is gorgeous on our skin! We can wear EVERY color on our skin! So get away from the typical deep berries, bronzes, golds…and go for something different instead.”

I took some convincing. But Damone dabbed some of his favorite pink lipglosses — Dior Reflect in Clutch Pink 517, and Rose Satin 657 — on the back of my hand, and I was willing to listen. SO pretty, and so subtle.

Damone’s other pink favorites include MAC blush in Pink Swoon, which is so not the kind of pink I’d normally reach for! And we bonded over items from the Hello Kitty collection. A lovely and anonymous beauty blogger gifted me with several items, and my best best Lauren sent me the tinted lip conditioner, which again was the kind of color I’d normally avoid, but turned out to be really sheer, pretty, and feminine when I applied it with a sparing hand.

Very inspiring! Much respect and thanks to Damone for his time, and for so much information. He’s an awesome person and I hope to meet him again in the future! Stay tuned next week for beauty tips (and video!) of Patrece Williams!

Happy weekend, bellas!

Damone is tha BIDNESS! I love his work, he does brows like no one can. Loving his hair in the pic as well.

He’s right-on about the pink! I wear varying shades of bright pink blush nearly every day on my brown skin, and they all look good. There is something very youthful and cheerful about it.

And Bella ~ the MAC Hello Kitty gloss in “Nice Kitty” is a sheer hot pink with iridescent shimmer, and oh-so-pretty on brown skin. πŸ™‚ Give it a whirl!

I keep telling my girlfriends about daring to step away from burgundies and browns. I adore pink. My fave for lips right now is YSL Rouge Volupte in #10.

Chantal over at Style Canteen also just posted about some great recs. She, like Starchild, also recommends the Hello Kitty colour palette.

I love Damone. He is so right about pink looking lovely on our skin. I can’t wait to see you new video, Bella.

I so agree with most of his tips. I keep my brows a nice natural shape, not too thick but not too thin. I love pink blushes and lipstick/gloss. The right shade can be extremely flattering on any skin tone. For a natural look on my caramel skin I love the blush that came in Stila’s foxy barbie kit. For a bold lip, I love MAC’s girl about town lipstick.

The one thing that I have to disagree with is threading! I used to have tons of problems with waxing, including irritation, breakouts, rashes, etc. This has all disappeared now that I’ve switched to threading and my skin can be extremely sensitive. If you have an issue with the thread being in the threader’s mouth, then you should go to someone who cuts the thread off the reel and simply holds both ends in her hands. I’ll never go back!

@ moni – i totally agree with you about threading. i’d never waxed my eyebrows before i tried threading (i have a natural arch, just a couple strays here and there that threading helps keep in check) and i’m glad i never did – the natural look threading gives is absolutely amazing, and i’ve converted my mother and sisters too πŸ™‚

i’m so with him on the pink though – although i’m not quite brave enough to try pink blush yet, i’m experimenting with different shades of lipstain and i love it all so far!

Brows! I so agree and learned this little tip some years ago.

I also love the idea of more pink.

I guess I will be in the mirror this weekend.

JCD! You’re back! Is it me, or have you not been by in a while? Either way, I missed you and great to see your name pop up in the comments again =)

Moni – I am a fan of threading, and the more traditional the better. But yeah he did make me think about the hygiene involved, which honestly never occurred to me before! I’ve got a threading post coming up anyway.

I think I’ll follow this up next week with a pretty in pink post – there are SO many gorgeous pink makeup products available now!

I agree with the comments about threading and pinks, I have been doing both for a couple years. I feel like a trend setter right now. πŸ™‚

Also, I agree with Damone about the First Lady’s brows, but I couldn’t say anything without the fear of pitchforks and torches chasing me down…Yay, to professional observations!

I agree with Damone about M’s eyebrows. They are way too severe and make her appear severe. I first noticed it on the 60 minutes interview after they won the election. Her make up artist says that she’s working on it b/c she got feedback stating the same thing. See here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/chi-0119-obama-browsjan19,0,7879514.story

i’ve been a fan of Damone’s for a while. I always admired his makeup and hair. He’s sooo right about the eyebrows and pinks. I love pink blush and lip gloss, it really does look beautiful on our skin tone. Speaking of brows i need to go touch mine up πŸ™‚

I LOVE Damone!! He’s is uber-fabulous and his hair is awesome. I agree about the brows (I tweeze my own and keep a natural shape) and the pink. My current faves are L’Oreal’s HIP lipglosses, in the squeeze tube, in Adoring 578 and Romantic 266. Soooo pretty against brown skin.

Ladies, when you do your brows, please style them in a way that doesn’t make you look anger or surprised all day long.

Co-signing others’ comments on threading…I have never had anyone put the thread in their mouth and I think the results are so much neater and more precise than with waxing. Bella, since you’re moving to Chicago, make sure you go to Little India (Devon Avenue) if you’re going to thread. Every time I’m in town I go to Dilshad’s…$6 excluding tip! I’m planning to go this weekend!

As for pink…um…I’m dark-chocolate and I’m not seeing it, myself. However, another thing I’m doing while in Chicago is shopping for makeup…what kinds of pinks should I be looking for?

I LOVE Damone Roberts! In addition to asking him about his hair, could you also ask about what he does to his skin–the man’s skin *glows*. I’ve watched him on “10 Years Younger” in jealousy over how pretty his hair & skin is!

  26. Nina

Damone Roberts is simply fabulous. Great post, as always, even though I love threading and can’t see myself maintaining my brows any other way. As a matter of fact, Loveofmylife, in the Atlanta area, I went to Karimah at DC Nails N Beauty on Church Street in Decatur (near Emory and 285 in a place lovingly called “Little India”). Karimah is amazing, but the other ladies are wonderful too. I think they charge $5, $4 if you catch a sale. Quick and friendly–not just courteous. I went through withdrawal when I moved and I visit every time I am in Atlanta.

Bella….you should have asked him about his hair because it is fabulous!!!

My favorite color is pink, so I’ve been on that for a while. I’ve never worn any other color blush or lip gloss for that matter. I use physician’s formula in blushing nude. A great choice if you just want to try it out. Ladies, haven’t you ever noticed how fabulous an outfit comprised of hot pink and chocolate brown looks? We truly can wear anything or any color. Aaaahhh, the joys of being brown skinned.

Please ask him about his hair. Since 10 Years Younger this man’s hair has been my idol.

I am very hairy and waxing broke me out and the lines was horrible. I have been threading every since but my person does not hold the thread in her mouth.

I can’t believe you met him!

I want to try the pink gloss but please update us on his hair. What does he use? Is it natural? Would LOVE to know…

  30. brightstar

I have to say not all threaders have the thread in their mounths. My threader has it around her neck (wierd but true)….but I can see where it’s coming from.

I like Damone a lot!!! I am so glad that he spoke up about WOC wearing pink. I am big advocate for that.

Start wearing sheer pinks and build up until you find a shade that works for you. One of my favorite pink (mauve) lippie is MAC Cultured l/g and MAC Viva Glam V.

Love the post. I simply adore MAC Pop Mode Lip Glass which I consider to be kinda pink with a shimmer of bronze – gorgeous.

I prefer threading as well.. I think which ever method someone is a fan of will of course say their way is better. With threading, the end of the string is in their teeth..but so what? lol I don’t mind it as long as they don’t spit on me πŸ˜›

If it was an issue, I’d still be alright cause I thread my own brows now. πŸ™‚
