Did you watch the Miss America pageant? Just half an hour ago, a new Miss America was crowned. Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron! Read that Washington Post article for details!
The beautiful Ms. Cameron now joins a list of seven — now eight — African American Miss America winners in history. PBS offers a fascinating look back at African Americans and the Miss America Pageant.
Back to Caressa, she had the whole package!! I know quite a few who had her pegged to win from early o’clock. And she shut it down during the talent portion, amirite?
Congratulations, Caressa!! Bellas all over the USA will be rooting for you as you represent in the Miss World pageant!

Hey, this is great! A beautiful black woman from my great state won! I’m just finding this out because (A)I haven’t watched the Miss America pageant in years and (B) Right now we’re getting the biggest snowstorm in SE VA in 20 years so this wasn’t even front page news in my Hampton Roads paper, The Daily Press. I should call them out! Anyway, nice write-up!

Congratulations! I did not get to watch the pagent but I am sure she did an outstanding job. I read the PBS article and I agree with the assessment/question they made at the end. I think the Miss America Pagent will always have an issue with diversity. Just in different ways. The rules to win are so stringent and manufactured that it is hard for true diversity to push through.

As someone who has flat out refused to ever watch another beauty pageant because of complete lack of diversity, I was glad to hear that she won. The cynic in me however is forcing me to hold my real excitement for when either a dark skinned or natural haired Black woman can win. Regardless, it is still great to hear that Miss America is a Black woman this year.
