Alek Wek, In Living Color

by afrobella

For any dark skinned bella questioning whether or not she should rock bright makeup – I present Alek Wek, as seen in the August issue of Dutch Glamour.

How do you say…d’gorgeous? Like I’ve been saying for years — we can wear the most glorious and bright colors, and totally pull them off!

This inspiring beauty image comes via Black Supermodels Chronicles, a site that offers perpetual style inspiration. And this post comes via my beloved Oh No They Didn’t, which has an awesome post of black supermodels there. Click for images of Oluchi, Alek Wek, Arlenis Sosa, Sessilee Lopez and more!

Makeup like Alek’s may not translate into everyday wear, but the bold brightness of her look inspired me. I probably won’t be powdering primary colors into my brows, but I WILL give rasta colored eye makeup another try.

Alek is just TOO cute. And I LOVE love LOVE her blue, purple and fuchsia look. To die for! I know exactly the makeup brands that offer the highly pigmented colors I need to recreate the look, too. That’d be Sugarpill, and Illamasqua. Look out for a review of these statement making brands soon!

What do you think of Alek’s look? Too cute, or too much?

Too much as applied, but if you’re just doing below the brow…awesome.

But she? Alek I’m pretty sure could pull off anything. I just love how her personality always shines through.

It’s vibrant, over the top, artistic and UNBELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL!!!! I love it when a woman lives out loud and rocks her makeup….So often we want to look like we have nothing on, how about trying something new? There’s no time like the present 🙂

Can’t believe you have people who say she’s ugly… look at her, laughing, gorgeous skin. She is amazing and, as you said, proof that black skin can rock beautiful make up!

sorry but why do people think she is pretty?? I don’t think she is pretty at all, infact she is really unattractive to me! Iman is beautiful, but she is NOT IMO!

I am glad that sistahs are being profiled in bright, flamboyant makeup colors. I have been wearing such colors for years. I am not a fan of neutral makeup colors at all, but I own a few.

Well, this woman is stunning. Years ago I had a boyfriend that thought she was ugly and would express it when she was shown on tv. I have to admit I had his views, but when I broke it off with him, I realized that he was an idiot!! and I was a bigger idiot for going along with him! SHE IS AMAZING AND HAS A BEAUTY THAT YOU HAVE TO APPRECIATE! ROCK ON MS. WEK!

P.S. I love her handbag collection!!

While I do not find her face too attractive. She has a very vibrant smile, a fairly cute nose, and beautiful skin. While her face isn’t striking, she has the ability to convey a lot of emotion overtly and subtly which attracts other people. As for her skin it has what appears to be a natural clearness to it with a look that constantly conveys a sort of purity about it.

I personally have always found her body to be the most interesting of her modeling. She carries herself wonderfully and finds photo-shoots that convey her best features. She is a lean girl but completely lacks the unhealthy look of many models and she also lacks the overt skinniness. Instead she appears simply lean and long legged. She appears to have a body of almost a dancer, but at the same time there is a natural boldness to it that blends grace with ferocity.

That is why people find her attractive.

    Thank You Darlrosa,

I agree with you 100%. Alek Wek never struck me as ugly because of her gorgeous smile, adorable button nose and flawless uniform skin. Additionally, she just comes across as an incredibly sweet and lovely person. Her inner beauty and joy radiates through consitently. It was especially visible in the Busta Rhymes “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” video. Moreover, she is incredibly statuesque.

Personally, I tend to prefer the bigger eyed beauty of Alek Wek’s cousin Ajak Deng. But it disturbs people when people, especially black people, seem to reviled by Alek Wek and call her ugly. I often worry whether they are automatically turned off by her very dark onyx skin and her flatter features. Iman’s more medium brown complexion and thinner nose may make her more appealing from a European perspective of beauty. But beauty comes in all forms and we have to cultivate our own African-centered perspectives.
