Shower Music β€” What Do You Listen To in the Morning?

by afrobella

What are your absolute essentials when having a shower in the morning? For me, it’s hot water, awesome body wash, my favorite face wash….and music.

black woman shampoo hair,

I can’t think back to a time when music wasn’t part of my shower experience. When I was younger, I used to sing. Around high school, I started finding ways to listen to music while in the shower. Whether that meant leaving the door open and my boombox blasting, or bringing a portable cassette player into the shower with me…whatever I had to do to get my tunes. The girls in my college dorm got used to hearing me coming and going every morning. iPods and mp3’s have made getting my morning shower music even easier. I have an iPod docking station in the corner of my bathroom, and every morning I choose a song that helps to set my mood and the eventual course of my day.

What determines my shower soundtrack? I choose songs based on my mood, but the length of shower I can take is an even more important factor. Timing my shower to just the right song makes the world of difference for my morning. What makes a perfect shower song? Depends entirely on your musical taste. I find that I love slow to midtempo soul music best, songs that build to a lush bridge I can sing my lungs out to, and songs that include a shift in tempo to lift my spirits and get me ready to face whatever lies ahead. If the song is too slow, or too monotonous, it doesn’t make it into my regular rotation. Here are some of my current favorite shower songs, to give you an idea of how I start my day!

Ain’t No Stopping Us Now – McFadden and Whitehead.

At 4 minutes long, this could be the perfect length for a shower song. The message makes it so inspiring and ideal for getting ready in the morning. Just be careful with those dance moves in the shower!

Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding

I enjoy the Kanye and Jay-Z version a LOT, but nothing comes close to Otis himself. This man was soul personified. Singing along with this in the shower brings me so much joy.

Sad note — according to the notes on that YouTube clip, this was Otis Redding’s last televised performance. The very next day, Otis along with the members of his band, died in an airplane accident. RIP, Otis. Your music lives on.

Reasons by Earth Wind and Fire

At 4:59, Reasons is a great jam for a good, long morning shower. Gives you time to use your favorite exfoliant, or shave your legs if you’re so inclined. Reasons is on the slower end of my preferred shower song scale, but it sets such a romantic tone to the day, I can’t resist!

As by Stevie Wonder

As might be my #1 favorite Stevie Wonder song, and that’s saying a LOT. At 7:15, As makes for a more decadent shower, perfect for weekends where you want to do a quick co-wash on your hair and don’t have to be somewhere in a hurry.

Purple Rain by Prince

The long version is 8:46. Purple Rain has all the ingredients for a perfect shower song — few things are more awesome than coming home from a long day at work, a hot day outside, or a good workout, and then taking an epic Purple Rain shower before bed. It’s like shower therapy. Trust me. Try it and tell me how you feel.

I’m putting myself out there on this random post…but I’m hoping I’m not alone! Bellas, do you listen to music while you shower? Or is it just me? πŸ™‚

I usually listen to a gospel pandora station while I shower, start the day off right!

  2. K. Lysha

I use music to time my showers too! But I take leisurely showers so I allow myself 2 or 3 4-5 minute songs to shower and cowash. I need to invest in an iPod docking station because I drag my laptop into the bathroom. I’m sure that steam isnt good for my machine lol.

  3. Mishara

    at

I pull my laptop into the bathroom and play a Pandora station I made.
Bath Music After Work- Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong are the staples of the station.
Shower Music in the morning- Salsa with lots of percussion. It reminds me of studying abroad in Mexico and it starts my mood off right.

  4. dee

    at

If I’m trying to quickly start my day I listen to three beyonce songs in a row(why don’t you love me, single ladies, schoolin life).

If I have time, I’ll play Adele and if I’m in the mood to sing along I play Jessie J.

My phone blast Pandora radio while i’m getting dressed period. I dont have to be taking a shower, just getting ready to zip out the door. I usually listen to gospel, giving praise to the Almighty for allowing me another day. πŸ™‚

I definitely listen to music in the morning – for the shower and while I get dressed. Usually some pandora station on my phone – rather than picking out a particular song. It certainly helps get me going!

  7. Kendra

    at

Haha… I do it all the time, especially if I’m gonna be in there a while washing my hair and shaving my legs! It’s a must-have made so much easier because of the mp3 player on my cell πŸ˜‰ … I also do it when I’m getting ready to go out!

  8. Iris

    at

I don’t have time to shower in the morning and shower at night. When getting dressed and heading to work, I like to listen to City of Glass, especially their song “Fall Back Restart” and anything by The Zolas.

  9. cosmicsistren

    at

During the week I don’t like to listen to music when I get up. I prefer to listen to the news. On the weekends I listen to soca music.

  10. Cheekie

    at

Great picks! I love me some “Quiet Storm” by Smokey Robinson in the shower. It’s very apt and gets me in a shower mood.

  11. Lily

    at

“Schoolin Life” had be running into work late and make-upless! I messed around and put it on repeat and somewhere around the third play I realized I had an office to get to – not a stage!

  12. Lily

    at

I am thankful for mp3 players for making it so easy for me to satisfy my music addiction! I cannot start my day without music! I make a playlist every morning to serve as the soundtrack for getting dressed, the drive, and the walk from the parking lot into the office. I hook up my mp3 player to my dock at home, hook it up when I get in the car, and when I get to the parking lot, I plug in my earbuds. Lately, “Love on Top” by Beyonce has been in heavy rotation on my playlists. That songs makes me smile inside out! ?

    at

I have a cool playlist I call encouragement that is about an hour long on my iTunes library. so, I start it when I get up, eat, shower, makeup, dressed…etc. I thought it was just me. LOL!

  14. Jem

I can listen to anything from Rufus Wainwright (Beautiful Child) to Erika Badu (Green Eyes) to Broken Social Scene (It’s All Gonna Break). I love listening to music while I shower. I drag my laptop to the bathroom, too.

  15. Kimberly

    at

You really short showers! πŸ™‚ I listen to NPR’s Morning Edition. I rock music all day in the office, though

  16. TraceyJoy

    at

I’ll pull whatever I’m in the mood for. This morning I pulled out the old school jams from Michael Jackson, SOS Band, The Gap Band and Cameo. Yesterday it was Frank Sinatra, Louie and Ella, last night shower music was Frankie Beverly and Maze. Tonight who knows maybe Train, Edwin McCain, Matchbox 20, then again I may just go Air Supply and Barry Manilow on everyone, lol. Love my music. πŸ™‚

  17. Chocolate Mom

I enjoy just hitting play and shuffle on my ipod and letting whatever come my way!!

  18. Giselle

    at

It’s most def by mood. And because of that, during the weekdays when I have to get ready for work, I play one song and one song alone. “Gotta Get Up” by Jill Scott…I don’t wanna go to work today, I’d rather stay home and play video games. I’d rather chill for real I don’t know how you feel but sometimes I feel like I’m working for nothing…but I gotta get up. That coupled with some Aromatherapy from Bath&BodyWorks and I’m good to go. The eveing times anything could go. I need help with the mornings πŸ˜‰

  19. Jocelyn

I always listen to Amy Winehouse when I’m getting ready.

I love listening to music while in the shower. I’m in my own little world in the shower, so of course I have to have music to soothe me. The type of music I listen to, all depends on my mood really. Do I need some motivation? inspiration? Energy? Just depends. Thanks for sharing!

  21. Diane Stalder

    at

Listening to music surely helps to shape up my mood for the day. However during those lazy days, I’d prefer to listen to the sounds of the water falling.

Then an even better one, turn off the shower and listen to the sound of silence.. listen to your self, your breathing, your body, meditate a bit..

Before washing off.. an indeed relaxing experience.

  22. Curvy CEO

    at

I do something similar – I play music while generally getting ready. So I usually have a good 20 minutes of music while lotioning up, getting dressed, and doing the hair and makeup. I typically use that as the opportunity to listen to new cds (yes, I still listen to cds!) but my general staple morning artists are Mary Mary, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Michael Jackson, Ledisi, and Fantasia.

  23. llehsal

I listen to music allll the time! The shower is one of my favorite places! My tunes of choice change as time goes by and it heavily depends on my mood. These days I’m in a real upbeat kind of mood, so my songs of choice are Otis by Jayz & Kanye, End of Time by Beyonce, Suavemente Besame by Elvis Crespo.

When I’m in a quiet mood I listen to adele and Alicia Keys. I bring out my 90’s – early 2000’s R&B like Joe, Carl Thomas, Boyz II Men, 112…the works.

  24. CarmelStacks

    at

I like “Bandy Bandy” by Zap Mama and Erykah Badu…it gets me feeling all feminine and easy going. At 6:50 minutes long it’s more than enough time to handle business!

  25. rachelle

    at

I usually place my ipod on shuffle and let it pick it for me, but lately, I’ve been tapping my feet and singing to India.Arie and Jill Scott. They give me the added boost I need to make it through the day.

  26. Rhonda

    at

I like to start the day off slow with the folksy blues Miss John Hurt the on to some heavier soul and gospel to the tune of Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

  27. SpacietyKaitlyn

I love love love listening to music while I shower, and get ready to start my day! My newest favorite song to listen to in order to get moving is Beyonce’s “Love On Top”. Such an upbeat song that puts me in a good mood!

  28. Nikki

    at

The person who lives with me (my boyfriend) thinks I am crazy to listen to music in the morning. I usually have my iPod on Iheartradio and the morning news and traffice going on at the same time. He just showers, lotions, dresses and goes, and listens to sports talk radio in his car. I need aural stimulation!! And I like uptempo music of any kind.

  29. mumtaza

I have a Bose alarm clock with decent bass. I put it on the rap station and that wakes me up. Then I wobble to it in the shower. The best morning, randomly “Kryptonite” by Big Boi and the Purple ribbon allstars came on. It made me smile so big. I rode that jam the rest of the day.

  30. Tina

    at

In the morning, I start off slow. I’ll often turn on the DirectTv music channels for instrumentals or soft rock, jazz, swing etc.- That’s my ideal morning, writing with music in the background. In the afternoon and evening is when I go more fast paced. I listen to many of the songs mentioned on my blog (happyrnb.com) at those times plus some inspiring songs from other genres.

  31. Christina

    at

I love listening to music in the morning also. It can start the day off so beautifully. I love listening to Anita Baker, Jill or something like John Legend. Sometimes I take it way back to Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong. It all depends on the mood.
