I personally prefer to sleep on a silk pillowcase, because I can’t keep a headwrap on at night to save my life. There are said to be multiple benefits of sleeping on silk. According to this Stylelist article, sleeping on silk pillowcases can help to “prevent sleep wrinkles” and stave off further effects of aging. And the slippery soft surface of silk is supremely gentle on your hair. The Branche Charmeuse Case is my favorite — since I started sleeping on it, I’ve noticed my hair is less matted when I wake up, and my hair even looks shinier. Branche pillow cases cost $75, and in general prices for 100% silk begin at $40 online.
When you get out of the shower, you might want to reconsider using a regular terrycloth towel on your tresses. If you wear your hair natural, or have curly hair, regular towels can make your hair frizzy. The Curlease towel is ultra thin, but ultra absorbent. I use a satin pillowcase. Do you know if there’s any difference between satin and silk, in terms of the impact on hair/facial skin?
I use what I think is a satin pillowcase but I also sleep in a silk scarf Definitely seen less hair(essentially none) tangled in my pillowcase when there used to always be a few.
I use a satin bonnet and a satin pillowcase. I’ll have to give silk a try, I’ve heard it’s better since it’s a natural fiber. I haven’t come around yet when it comes to towels. I basically wrap my hair in a cotton towel while getting ready and that’s it. I haven’t had much luck with fancy towels.
I doubt I’ll be spending $75 on a pillowcase but I’m willing to do a little research to find a more pocket-friendly one… but the curl ease towel might be the move for me. thanks!
Afrobella, do you sleep with your ‘fro straight on the pillowcase or do you braid it or anything first?
I sleep with a satin bonnet. I have acne prone skin and I do not want oil or hair products on my pillowcase. I also use a microfiber towel (they have them at linen/household item stores and at Marshalls).
I’m a satin bonnet lady as well – except when my husband hides it! 😉 The pillowcases would certainly make things simpler.
I use a satin pillow case. I have for years because I cannot keep anything on my head.
I have also passed this on to my married friends who can keep scarves on thier head, but husbands don’t really like that look.
I was looking into a better satin pillowcase because I heard on a radio program a black woman had a small business online selling them.
I sleep on a satin pillowcase along with my satin bonnet. Sometimes if I haven’t retwisted my hair and want it to remail more full, I will go without the bonnet because that tends to make my hair more flat. I have a turbie towel but it’s not the best. I have also tried drying my hair with old t-shirts because I heard that it causes less friction/frizz than a regular towel. Has anyone else heard that?
@ stacy – I used to use the old cotton t-shirts, and they worked well enough. I read on the savvy brown blog to try using the chamoise that u use to wipe off water from you car…and have had great results!! It’s under $10 at auto mart. No more drippies and curl definition is virtually frizz free
Los Angelista! My husband hides mine too! I have a satin “hair pouch”. Instead of having a square piece of material, the scarf is sewn closed at the bottom creating a little pouch that protects the length of my hair that would normally fall out at night. I also have a satin pillow case, but I noticed that it secretly tries to escape at night and slides off the bed. Those work pretty well for me, but I definately need something new for when I get off the shower and want to do a serious multi-hour deep conditioning. My towels, no matter how nice they are, leave little fuzz bunnies at the ends of my locs.

I use a long thin satin scarf for my edges & use a satin bonnet for the rest of my hair. Since the bonnet will ride up to the top my hair as a sleep anyway. The first 2 years of being natural I slept with nothing. Now I use the satin to keep my moisture balance. But I HATE any pillow case that is satin or silk. I like my pillow to be COLD when I flip it over. 🙂
I have used the towels with unexpected results. The curl-ease towel actually makes my hair dry straight or slightly wavy rather than curly. I use the towel only when I am going to blow-out and straighten my natural hair.
When I want my hair curly with no frizz, I must either air dry – – or twist it and use a diffuser.
I have the Curlease towel. Many naturallycurly.com forum members like it and the company is nice. The size is great. But I think the towel leaves my hair frizzier than the Aquis microfiber towel. I leave it on for five to 15 minutes and then my hair air dry.

I have a satin bonnet that I never wear. Maybe I’ll make a silk pillowcase.
I sleep on a satin pillow case I picked up at a Sally’s beauty supply for around $10. I carry an oversized silk scarf when I travel and just wrap my hotel pillow in that.
For drying my hair I use a plain t-shirt of soft cotton.

The whole case is hopeless for my hair LOLOL I can’t even keep a cotton bandanna on my head — much less a silk or satin scarf. As for the pillowcase — I’d have to choose between frizzed hair and smoother skin with 100% cotton or nice hair and blotchy skin with silk or satin. I love my hair, but I simply must have to go with cleaner skin. The happiest medium I’ve found is to use a super-duper high (800)thread-count 100% cotton sateen pillowcase.
